ROGUE SQUADRON - Do We Finally Have A Promising Update On Patty Jenkins' STAR WARS Movie?

Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron appears to be the latest Star Wars movie trapped in development hell, but do we finally have a promising update about where things stand with the project? Check it out...

Rogue Squadron was supposed to be Lucasfilm's next Star Wars movie; it was even announced via an expensive and flashy promo video showcasing director Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) boarding an X-Wing while talking about her love of fighter pilots due to her family history.

Unfortunately, the movie stalled due to the filmmaker supposedly having other shooting commitments, though no one knows exactly what those are. As of right now, the chances of Rogue Squadron meeting its planned December 2023 release date are slim, and this feels like yet another Star Wars movie that's found itself trapped in development hell (similar to Rian Johnson's trilogy).

Star Wars fans have, however, spotted a positive update on social media this weekend as author Mike Stackpole - who is credited with creating the Rogue Squadron concept in the original "Expanded Universe" - says he was contacted by Jenkins early on in the movie's development. Some believe that conversation happened recently, though we'd bet it was before the pause button was hit on the movie.

Last year, Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni suggested the issue of movies like this not getting off the ground is a "laughably recurring problem at Lucasfilm under president Kathleen Kennedy." He added that, "Top filmmakers are dying to make a Star Wars movie - until they sign on and experience the micromanagement and plot-point-by-committee process."

After the reaction to the Star Wars sequels, it's no wonder Lucasfilm is looking to stop filmmakers veering too far off the rails (Johnson and J.J. Abrams made some very questionable creative decisions). Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi are both developing separate movies, though there's no word on when they could see the light of day or if they're similarly bogged down by creative issues.

Rogue Squadron still has a December 22, 2023 release date, so keep checking SFFGazette.com for updates as that site is your #1 source for all the latest news on this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Please don't write it. You're a fantastic director, but a screenwriter you are not.

A Rogue Squadron movie has sooooooo much potential to be awesome. So it's a little sad that I dont have the highest of hopes for this.

I really want it to be great though.

I’m betting this movie will fall through…

I'm almost at the point of saying "[frick] it" with Star Wars, they should take the DC approach now and just let each filmmaker do their own thing within that universe. It seemed to work for that "Visions' thing and after the flustercuck that were the sequels, can they really do any worse?

Hell, Zack Snyder seemed so jazzed by his seven samurai idea for a SW movie that he decided he's gonna make it anyway and call it Rebel Moon.

@AscendedExtra - That would suck so hard...

It be like all the Star Wars Visions stories are considered hard canon and not What If... Fans would not be happy.

@TheMandalorian - Maybe i'm an outlier. I didn't even care about Visions, I'm just using that as an example of different creators getting to do it their own way.

The alternative is micromanagement and plot-by-committee, and we've had more than enough examples of that in recent years to show it's not at all the ideal.

After the sequels I stopped caring about canon purism. The "new canon" cherry-picks haphazardly from the old EU anyway and internal contradictions abound. Idgaf too much about retcons, just give me a good story that makes sense and honors the spirit of what Lucas created.

Patty Jenkins has made two BAD DC movies... why on earth is Lucas/Disney trusting her with a stand alone film, that she already said isn't going to be following the established canon of Rogue Squadron Video Games/Comic stories?! This just seems like its being set up to be bad and fans to get pissed off, haha!

Kathleen Kennedy should have been gone a long time ago

@pyramosteu - it’s honestly shocking she hasn’t been fired yet. I can only imagine it’s due to contracts and nepotism but Jesus Christ.. she’s failing upward. Rise of Skywalker was a massive flop and she’s still here shitting the bed. Unreal.

"micromanagement and plot-point-by-committee process"

Jeez, this must be hellish.

Zero interest on this after WW84.

Also Star Wars is a dead franchise for me after the sequel trilogy abominations.
