STAR WARS: Joel Edgerton Keen To Return As 'Uncle Owen' In Rumored OBI-WAN Spin-Off

Joel Edgerton (Warrior) found his big break with the Star Wars prequels when he made a brief appearance as a younger version of Luke's Uncle Owen. While he's heard nothing of an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, he talks in detail here about why he hopes to return...

There have been a number of rumours about one of the Star Wars spin-offs focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi at various points in his life, though many fans believe if it does happen it should fill in the gaps between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. When Superhero Hype caught up with Joe Edgerton recently, he had no idea about plans for a movie which would bring back Ewan McGregor's take on the beloved character, but was quick to point out that he'd love the chance to flesh out Luke's Uncle Owen by exploring why he hates Obi-Wan so much by the time of the original trilogy. "Yeah, there’s great drama there and I should be involved. Actually, when it was first mentioned to me today I thought, “Ooh, that sounds cool.” I think what’s going on in London right now sounds cool, ’cause I reckon [J.J. Abrams] is a great keeper, he’s sorta proved himself to be a great shoemaker, the great reboot master. I think he’s excellent at story and he’s excellent at character and bringing new faces to the screen as well as old. I don’t believe if you were gonna reboot “Star Wars” or tell new stories was to fill it with ultra-famous people. I love the way he cast it, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, but then a bunch of people that you hardly even know."

The actor also talks about how his brother was McGregor's stunt double and how he hopes a return for Owen would mean that he gets some action scenes this time around. "And I could actually be a good… as long as I get to do some good action sh*t, you know? I don’t want to just be a nerdy moisture farmer. Looking at Owen in “Episode IV” it looked like he’d been through some sh*t too, and as you say it looked like there was a bit of a fractiousness there. I like to think that he was employed on the battlefield, in the air… Okay, we’re gonna talk about this. This is a necessary addition to my film canon, it gives me another chance to do something more than just rub my hands on a rag and shake Anakin’s hand." What do you guys think about Edgerton's comments? Would you like to see this period in Star Wars history further explored? Sound off below!

"Edgerton (Warrior) found his big break with Revenge of the Sith"

Before that, he was in Attack of the Clones.

A movie showing his life on Tatooine watching as young Luke grows older seems like an okay idea, but they should only do these spin-offs if they feel it is absolutely necessary, or at least good.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Bring his character back. Watching young Uncle Owen and Obi-Wan butting heads would make for great drama.

I think that'd be pretty cool, I wouldn't mind seeing a movie about Obi Wan where Owen plays a secondary character. Seeing him all burned up in ep.IV would have a bigger impact on the audience.

I wish they'd create more new characters for this universe rather than trying to tie everyone together and rehashing the period during the prequels and the original trilogy.

I'm all for it, it is crazy that someone cast in a 'bit part' like this ended up becoming quite a star. I'd love to see him and McGregor go on some kind of crazy Tatooine adventure as Kenobi and Lars.

I'd like to see him return for the role. I could see him in a firefight with a Tusken Raider and Obi-wan interacting about how to raise Luke in the ways of a Jedi. I can see Obi-wan trying to give Luke the famous lightsaber when Luke is just a boy, and Uncle Owen telling him to leave his farm.

dude, I'd love to see this. My wife has a crush on this dude (she also loves the original un-altered trilogy and hates the newer crapogy...see why I married her? eh?)
Also, he was fantastic in Warrior. If you haven't seen that movie yet, shame on you.
