We're used to Star Wars films breaking records, but this is probably not the one Disney was hoping for.
With an estimated $68 million, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is expected to win its second weekend at the box office; but, based on total dollars, it amounts to the biggest week-to-week drop in box office history.
The Last Jedi earned an impressive $220 million in its first weekend, but dropped to $68 million in week two - a total drop of $152 million. It's worth noting, plenty of films have experienced drops of $100 million or more between the first and second weekends. Even Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped off by $149 million following its record-breaking opening weekend in 2019. Still, Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi is the first film to drop off by more than $150 million.
There are multiple contributing factors to such a record-breaking week-to-week drop, including the fact that Christmas Eve - a typically sluggish time for the box office - falls on a Sunday. Of course, it would be remiss to ignore the number of fans disgruntled by the direction of Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi. Despite a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, The Last Jedi sits at just 52% audience approval, which means fans probably aren't sitting through the movie multiple times as they did with The Force Awakens. That could also explain how The Last Jedi also suffered the largest Friday-to-Friday drop in franchise history.
At the end of the day, The Last Jedi will go on to make Disney boat loads of money, the only question now is how much?
