What Did Warner Bros. Sacrifice For A Stake In Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR?

Warner Bros. are clearly confident that Christopher Nolan has another $1 billion hit on his hands with Interstellar as they have given up the rights to Friday the 13th, South Park and a to-be-determined A-list property (something superhero related?) in exchange for half the profits. Read on for details!

Many were taken by surprise when it was announced that Christopher Nolan's upcoming sci-fi movie Interstellar would be co-produced by rival studios Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. However, thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we now know more about the deal that was made to give the latter studio a 50% stake in the project which they clearly believe will be a box office hit. They've given up the rights to the Friday the 13th horror franchise and South Park, as well another A-List property that has yet to be determined. Paramount are no strangers to superhero movies thanks to their time working with Marvel Studios, so could it be that we're about to see them adapt something DC related? Time will tell. The fact that the two studios previously held a stake in the two franchises named above is part of the reason why they haven't been on the big screen for a while, although sources tell the site that Paramount only have the rights to Friday the 13th and South Park for the next five years. As that's the case, expect news on both very soon...

They should have sacrificed Friday The 13th long ago, anyway.

It's Sherlock Holmes fellas.
WB won't let go a DC superhero if they are hoping to make a JL film.

Couple of things!

Interstellar is not a Billion$ property!
That's evident from November 7 release date!
If its coming in December or Summer next year then for sure!
But November release date speaks more of SCI-FI Action-Mystery-TRILLER than SCI-FI ACTION-ADVENTURE!
It could be!
& it could certainly earn a lot but before actually knowing the scale of the film; it's premature to say it'll do Billion! If its as Big (or more) than INCEPTION, the Billion is in sight!

& secondly, WB aren't sharing 50% of Profits; they are handling Foreign BoxOffice!
That means movie can flop in US & will still be profitable for WB as there stakes are in Non-US gross! American earning is for PARAMOUNT!

All aside... So glad Nolan is working on a SciFi!
I hope it's as big as INCEPTION & even better! I LOOOOVED INCEPTION!!

Let's not forget that Paramount did Watchmen with Warner Bros, so not like this news is all that shocking. Warner Bros is also planning on co-producing Brad Birds 1906 with Disney and Pixar so this could just be a tactic by Warner to minimise risk.

@Jollem -- I saw that ep of the Arsenio Hall Show back when it first aired. Highlight of my teenage horror-movie-lovin' life lol

Glad that F13 is back with Paramount. Friday '09 was god-awful and New Line made a buffoon of him in Freddy vs Jason. Now that he's back home with the studio which released all his previous flicks, maybe we'll get a flick that's worth half a damn.

Time to face facts - WB cannot get out of it's own way
AND . . .
there won't be any Justice League movie made for years and years. There wasn't ACTUALLY going to be one for years anyway.
It's a fantasy. A NICE fantasy . . . but a fantasy nonetheless.

@Mcgee But Hawkman, Aquaman, Atom and Green Arrow are DC's biggest b-listers (Well Aquaman's an A-lister) and all are important to thew JL due to having a long history withthe team.

while I love my superhero stuff.. don't diss south park or horror shit.

Growing up loving comics and being scared in darkened theaters is a very cool childhood memory I will never give up.

And the original Halloween movie is still one of my fav movies of all genres combined. That and the Godfather rocked my world.

Why are you guys are so worried about Paramount? This all about WB hedging a bet on Nolan. WB has something good going with it's "A" team working on CBMs. I highly doubt they will want to share these potential blockbusters unless they can get a similar deal. No way Paramount would co finance and let WB snag 50% on the back end of JLA movie. Now way in heck. WB gave up garbage properties for gold, and they get them back, so they've gained a small fortune and lost nothing. Makes you wonder who was asleep at Paramount when this deal was inked. They must be desperate for a sliver of Nolan's success too.

@Jollem: wow a flash from the past...I remember watching that Arsenio Hall show, if I remember Jason just sat there all menacing while Arsenio kept asking him questions...it was classic.

WB isn't totally giving up the rights to this A-list property, they're apparently just letting Paramount co-finance it. Besides, I doubt they'll get rid of any major DC properties.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if the A-list property is something like Looney Tunes.

My favorite line from the article:

"They've given up the rights to the Friday the 13th horror franchise and South Park, as well another A-List property that has yet to be determined."

Wow...didn't realize Friday the 13th and South Park were A-List movie properties!

Not much of a sacrifice, I would of done the same thing.

Who the hell watches Friday the 13th movies anymore? And sure South Park has its' rabid fanbase but I doubt more movies would makes the money the 1st one did.

While he is a Justice League member,a character like Shazam would be better served getting a film series from another studio then having to wait for WB to get around to him. If Shazam is in a DC Cinematic universe, he would always come off as a goofy version of Superman,so putting him with another studio would allow the character to get the attention he deserves.

Paramount has a long history with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, so maybe we would get to see him play Black Adam sometime in this life.Maybe put Mark Walberg as the title hero and have Michael Bay direct.
