UK REVIEW: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World By JoshW

It might have been out in the US for a couple of weeks already but it's only been out in the UK for a few days! Read on for my in-depth and SPOILER FREE review of one of 2010's best comic book movies...

Review Opinion

I'm not sure how many of you have read the graphic novels that this movie is based on, but I haven't. So for that reason I won't be able to comment on how faithful Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is to the source material. However, from what I've read in both interviews and other reviews, it sticks very closely to the comics and I for one am now a hell of a lot more interested in checking them out!

I'm not going to bother giving you my own synopsis of the movie. (I'm too scared I'll accidentally break my "Spoiler Free" rule, lol!) After all, I'm sure you've read a fair few of them and seen enough trailers to get the general idea of the plot. And it's pretty straightforward. You can just sit back, relax and enjoy a funny and intelligent story without having to think too much about it. I suppose you could say that's it's a summer blockbuster, but with brains and heart, unlike a lot of the other crap we've so far seen this year. It's fun and a little wacky and there are plenty of laughs to be had as well as the romantic element that thankfully never reaches the point of being too sickly or off-putting for those of you, who like me, aren't fans of romantic comedies. In fact, Scott Pilgrim finds a perfect balance of those two genres as well as the stunning action sequences. (more in those later) While things are a little slow to begin with and it sometimes feels as if they're just filling time between fights, that's probably just down to my impatience to see the next great scene and things never gets boring regardless. What really makes this movie stand out though is the brilliant characters and the fantastic actors who portray them.

I've never been the worlds #1 Michael Cera fan but he gives a superb performance here and helps evolve Scott Pilgrim into a whole other place by the time the credits role. While he's an expert at the nerdy side of things, I was surprised to find that he handled the action and more serious parts of the movie just as well and you can now consider me a fan of the guy. His co-star, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is also great although I was surprised to find that she really didn't have all that much to do here in comparison to the title character. Despite that, you can't fault what was an otherwise flawless performance in which she delivers both the sweet and vulnerable side of Ramona Flowers as well as a pretty bad ass side too! She's a beautiful young actress and surely has a great feature ahead if her...and if that doesn't include the fan favourite role of Mary Jane Watson, then fine. She could probably do better than another love interest anyway! The supporting cast is fantastic. Kieran Culkin, Ellen Wong, Anna Kendrick and the members of the Sex Bob-Oms' all have fairly minor roles in the grand scheme of things but nevertheless deliver memorable performances and often deliver some of the funniest lines.

Now, who am I forgetting? The seven evil exes of course! I was expecting Chris Evans to steal the show and unsurprisingly he did. As Lucas Lee, he delivered some great lines along with a few of the films funniest moments. Just don't go expecting to see anything that remotely resembles what we'll see from him in Captain America: The First Avenger though! This is a strictly comedic performance and a damned funny one at that. Brandon Routh (Todd Ingram) isn't far behind him though and for anyone who didn't see his performance in Chuck as proof enough that he's a great actor then this will surely change your mind! Not only does he have perfect comedic timing, but Routh makes a surprisingly good villain. I know that the majority of us would like to see him back as the Man of Steel but I for one would love to see him tackle a bad guy just as much now! Jason Schwartzman is given some of the best material to work with in the movie and clearly relishes his role as the villainous Gideon Graves. Thanks to this, you'll end up (loving to) hate his character within moments of meeting him which makes it even more exciting to root for Scott during the latter third of the movie. It's amazing actually just how quickly he switches between being a smarmy bastard, an evil one and in other parts funny! I've not actually seen Schwartzman in anything other than this but will be keeping an eye on what he does in future. Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel and Mae Whitman as Roxanne "Roxy" Richter both give two very unique and memorable performances while Shota Saito and Keita Saito as Kyle and Ken Katayanagi are largely forgettable apart from the great music that's featured in their fight with Scott Pilgrim.

It's Edgar Wright's direction that deserves the most praise for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World though. The action scenes are amazing. Pretty much every member of the cast deserves a nod for the great work they did in the varied and exciting fights. They're fantastically done and easily surpass both Kick-Ass and Iron Man 2 in terms of how visually stunning they are. The fact that Wright blends these scenes so cleverly with some fantastic music just helps to make them all the more thrilling. Personally, the use of music in a movie is something that has the potential to really alter the experience for me. Whether it's an impressive score by the likes of Hans Zimmer or just great music that perfectly fits a scene, it's important in my opinion. Here, we're treated to a fantastic bunch of original songs and I'm honestly tempted to go and buy the soundtrack. The CGI in Scott Pilgrim is also extremely well done and whether it's the stunning visuals during the aforementioned Sex Bob-Oms scenes, the brilliant references to past video games or when its cleverly used in the fantastic fight scenes it doesn't once falter. Edgar Wright's last two movies, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, were two of the best British movies ever made by he's really out done himself here and proved that he's more than capable of handling a big action packed blockbuster.

After giving films like Iron Man 2 and Kick-Ass 5* reviews, but later realising it should have been more like 4*, I was planning on being a little harsher with Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. But I can't because it deserves top marks all round. If Edgar Wright surpasses himself with his planned Ant-Man movie, then that'll be even more an epic of epic epicness than this was!

Thanks for reading. :)

Read the books and be surprised. The movie to the books is like Dragonball Kai to DBZ, they just cut away pointless stuff. Wright should have made Scott Pilgrim into 2 movies:

Vs. The World
Vs. The Universe!!!

Oh, and #1 greatest soundtrack EVER!!!

Well rounded review. I saw this movie twice, and loved it each time. Can't wait for the Blu-Ray release. The soundtrack is ok but the musical score is amazing.

Saw it opening weekend. great adaptation. Fun movie. Sadly there were only about 25 other people in the theater where I saw it, and half of them walked out about 30 miniutes into it. Tried to take my niece and nephew to see it last night and the theater already took it out. Apparently they had only sold about 100 tickets total since it opened.

Aki87: Cheers dude. It's still too early to tell how well it did here (it only came out on Wednesday) but as soon as I find out, I'll post it here on CBM! It was competing against Grown Ups mostly so I'd hope that it could beat that!

BryEL: So did they squeeze both books into the one movie or just adapt Vs. The World? If it's the former, it was probably for the best, as I dont see them making a sequel unfortunately!

SHAZAM171: Hopefully, those of us in the UK (along with the rest of the world) will be able to push it's box office up enough so that it'll make a profit because it damn well deserves to IMO!

ToddCasil: Thanks man, I too am really looking forward to the blu-ray release. It'll look stunning on that format!

MarsAmbassador: I love Bill Murray! Did you see his cameo in Zombieland? [frick]ing hilarious! :D I'll see if my local Blockbuster has that movie and if not, I'll get it off Amazon. Thanks for the tip mate!

CBArtist: Damn, that's a real pity. I was in a screen that could seat something like 175 people and there was probably 30 of us in there at the most. It's a fantastic movie but the fact it's such a wacky sort of film and is based of a pretty obscure comic book didnt help it's cause at all.

ANIL: Thanks bud, I'm sure you'll love it! :)

The4thWall: I completely agree. Inception has got to be my #1 because it's probably one of my all time movies EVER, never mind of 2010!

Destroyer: Thanks man, I'd definitely check it out if I were you! It's not my sort of thing either but the great director and cast was enough to convince me to check it out...and I'm really glad that I did!

patriautism: The less that original movies like this make, the more we'll end up with crap sadly. But it's that same crap which always seems to make the most!
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 8/28/2010, 12:57 PM
I think it is a movie that is going to appeal predominantly to the CBM crowd, so it will probably not do what they hoped for it to do in sales. Everyone I have talked to that saw it outside of that demographic thought it was stupid.

I loved Scott Pilgrim and think this review pretty much sums up how I felt about the film, it was just so unique and fun and something different that we don't see very often. I am SOOO buying the soundtrack. The Bass Battle is just epic.

Saw it on UK opening day and the theatre was nearly empty, its just a big budget film for a small demographic.
But i loved it and will go see it again for sure.

Great review Josh! :)
The original songs and music on the soundtrack was fun and energetic; just as the film was. This is by far one of the best soundtracks for a film and one of the best original soundtracks for a film, especially a comic adaptation.

I've seen Jason before. You can check him out on HBO's "Bored to Death" where he plays Jonathan Ames (well a fictional version of him), an author who decides to pose as a detective. He and Zach Galifinakis are hilarious! He was also in "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" and "Rushmore."

Michael Cera was just a revelation in his performance. He managed to shed off the geeky image we've all known of him and made himself into an above average and loveable character. MEW was pretty great here too, but like you said, another way to describe her character's presence here was as the archetypical 'princess' in video games and fairy tales in certain portions. Except for that wicked showdown with Mae Whitman.

It's also comical how both Brandon Routh and Chris Evans, one having played an American icon and the other about the play one, are both playing these villainous yet juicy laugh pieces. It's funny when you look at it like that.

As Ryden said, the soundtrack is a must buy! But sadly like Aki87 and everyone else is pointing out the film was just misunderstood and plainly ignored here in the box office among other obvious reasons. I remember me and my mom (yes, I'm sixteen and we just wanted to get out of the house and have a fun time. Nothing wrong with that right?) going to see this in a small theatre and there was barely anyone there. It was just us, three preteens and a teenage couple. Aside from the awkwardness, it felt too quiet for a film like this. At least there is still hope in other regions of the world. This is definately going to be remembered as a cult classic and one of the best and most underrated CBMs of all time.

Live on Sex Bob-Omb! Did I spell that right?
Ironbat95
Ironbat95 - 8/28/2010, 2:03 PM
@Joshw there are actually 6 volumes in the series and they are great books. The movie was awesome too! They should've just called it Scott Pilgrim though

RacerREX: Cheers. I got bored of that avatar a few weeks ago actually! I went back to Nemesis for a while but I'm sticking with Green Lantern for now...the quest to find the perfect avatar continues, lol!

Ranger: I think you're completely right about that but the odd thing is, I went to see it with someone who's never even read a comic book and they loved it! I think it's hard to get a film like this to appeal outside of the demographic though...just like Kick-Ass!

Ryden: I'm pleased you agree with my take on the movie! It was just pure fun and it's such a pity the fact it's so unique is also why it'll probably end up not making as much money as it deserves to!

TANK: Yes indeed. I'm from Wales to be exact which you can see on the map below! :) Where exactly are you from again? Oh, and thanks - glad you like the review!

INFAMOUS88: It's a pity, but I'm afraid you're right. I have no idea what the budget was but I really hope they end up making a decent enough profit after they add on DVD/blu-ray sales!

AverageCitizen99: Thanks man! :) And thanks for the advice - I'll try and find that HBO series online somewhere because that sounds pretty good! I completely agree with your points about Cera/Winstead/Evans/Routh and you make some all round excellent points! And no, there's nothing wrong with going with your mom/mum. I'm 20 and when I dont go to the cinema by myself or with friends (which is most of the time) I'll occassionally go and visit my mum, who lives a couple of hours away to see a film or will go see something with my dad. And yeah, it's Sex Bob-Omb. At least I'm pretty sure it is...

Ironbat95: Interesting! I'll have to check them out at some point I think.

Josh@ My non=CBM friends loved Kick-Ass, but felt that the whole nerd having to fight 7 evil exes to win the girl was just too ridiculously "out there" compared to other comic book storylines. As a comic book fan I feel the same way. To each their own. :-)

i finally saw this movie and it was amazing. i also got all the graphic novels and are even better. i also downloaded the game on xbox live and its just as great. THE ONE thing i had a problem with was that Micheal Cera played Scott. im not a big fan of him at all. he did an ok job but Scott Pilgrim is very energetic and micheal is very soft spoken and thats exactly how he was in the movie. STILL a very good movie

[frick] off spammer!

Awesome review Josh, I STILL haven't seen it. Next week for deff though. This is like the 5th five star review I have seen for the film so I can't wait now.

As for the other movies you mentioned, I gave eboth Iron Man 2 and Kick-Ass 4 stars aswell but to be honest, like Lee, i'd drop IM2 down to 3 (maybe 3 and a half) on repeat viewings.

Thanks for the support, and letting me know that there is nothing wrong with hanging out with parents. :)

Hey man, I just read the budget the film was made in and it doesn't look good. The film was made for around 80 to 95 million dollars. It looks like it is up to everyone overseas to try and keep this flick afloat.

I'm planning on writing down a summer review so I hope you check it out.
