When Shazam! Fury of the Gods underperformed at the box office, director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation) said that he was considering a return to the horror genre, and that's exactly what he did.

The filmmaker's next project has now been set, and it will be a feature adaptation of 2015's interactive drama horror video game, Until Dawn.

According to THR, Sandberg will helm the movie for Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions, with Annabelle and The Nun writer Gary Dauberman working on a pass of the script, which was originally penned by The Invitation scribe Blair Butler.

Dauberman has an adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot in the pipeline, but the movie still doesn't have a release date (last we heard, there was talk of sending it directly to streaming). He is also developing a live-action take on 1980s animated series Gargoyles for Disney+.

Dauberman, who signed a first-look deal with Screen Gems and Sony to deliver a slate of horror movies last year, is producing under his Coin Operated banner. Sandberg and Lotta Losten are also on board as producers via their Mangata shingle, as well as Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

Until Dawn was developed by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. "Players assume control of eight young adults who have to survive on Blackwood Mountain when their lives are threatened. The game features a butterfly effect system in which players must make choices that may change the story. All playable characters can survive or die, depending on the choices made. Players explore the environment from a third-person perspective and find clues that may help solve the mystery."

The game features a mysterious killer and cannibalistic Wendigos, so we assume the movie will follow suit. Plot details are still under wraps, but Screen Gems is describing it as "an R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast."

The game's voice cast includes Hayden Panettiere as Samantha Giddings, Peter Stormare as Dr. Hill, Rami Malek as Joshua Washington, Brett Dalton as Michael Munroe, Meaghan Martin as Jessica Riley, Galadriel Stineman as Ashley Brown, Noah Fleiss as, Christopher Hartley, Nichole Bloom as Emily Davis, Jordan Fisher as Matthew Taylor, Antonella Lentini as Hannah and Beth Washington, and Larry Fessenden as The Stranger.

No release date has been announced.

Oh Shazam. You had so much promise and then you dumped a huge load and sat in it.

His horror work is legit, I dig it

...why? The whole point of the game was to he a choose your own adventure horror movie. If anything the story was the weakest part because it was meant to be a typical horror movie. I legit think pong would make a better movie adaptation.

@Origame - Have you ever seen the Black Mirror Bandersnatch movie that came out a few years ago?

I think something like that would be cool, but it wouldn't really work in theaters. It would have to be a streaming release.

@SheepishOne - yeah, but bandersnatch had a clever plot that was built around the choose your own adventure format.

And assuming that's what they do, then the only difference between the game and the movie is you don't have walking sections.

Until Dawn was a complete fricking disaster, both as a game and as a story. None of the characters were likable and a majority of your choices were meaningless or phrased so poorly that you couldn't possibly have any idea how they'd impact the story being told. The idea of having the voice actors be established celebs is fine, but having them use facial likeness meant you were constantly reminded that these are actors in a video game. They never sold any of their characters and the acting was poor.

Other than trying to leech off an established IP, there's zero reason to actually label this as an adaptation of Until Dawn. Just take a similar establishing concept of a group of friends being invited to a mountain cabin getaway by another friend who lost a family member at the mountain a year prior and has become reclusive. It starts off ideal with beautiful weather, playing on the Ski slopes, etc... and then a storm roles in and you can have them be picked off one by one as they discover the mysteries.

@MaxPaint - Have you played? It? Might literally be my favorite video game. Well, The Witcher 3 is probably my favorite video game... But this one is close!

Not him. I loved playing "Until Dawn" and playing with the fates of the totems and after seeing "Fury of the Gods", I have no confidence in him to do the content justice live action.

One of my favorite video games of all time, but I don't see this translating to a movie in a successful way.
