SPAWN Creator Todd McFarlane Hints That Planned Casting Addition "Will Blow Up The Internet"

According to Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, he's currently trying to bag a huge talent for his planned big screen adaptation of the beloved comic book series. They may even end up breaking the internet...

Hollywood is currently on shutdown, but Todd McFarlane remains hard at work in his big screen reboot of Spawn. The movie currently has Jamie Foxx attached to star as the title character, while Avengers: Endgame's Jeremy Renner has signed up to play Detective Twitch. Now, though, it sounds like the comic book writer and artist has big plans for another A-List talent.

"About a month ago, I had a big fish. I just about got him on deck, right?" McFarlane told ComicBook.com during a recent interview. "But we lost him and those are always frustrating because whenever you got the fish out of the water, pull them up on deck and the line breaks."

"We got an offer out to, I think, a bigger fish. So, there weren't too many bigger than the first guy, but anyway, we'll see. If I could've got the last guy, it would've been a home run. If I can get this guy, it will be a grand slam. This one will blow up the Internet. So, we'll see," he teased.

McFarlane (who plans on directing this new Spawn movie), has already enlisted The Walking Dead special makeup effects master Greg Nicotero, as well as "a couple of [directors of photography] that have won [awards]." Blumhouse's Jason Blum, meanwhile, is also backing the upcoming project.

It's certainly going to be interesting seeing how Spawn comes together, but it's likely to have been put on hold for now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. McFarlane clearly has big plans, though, and is pulling out all the stops to deliver a movie fans of the comic books will appreciate.

Are you guys excited for Spawn?

The more he talks about this movie the less I want to see it. And its not his idea or vision thats turning me off. I think that its actually great. I'll always be a fan of his work but I think he's just full of himself.

The only time Spawn's ever been interesting is when it had guest writers on it (Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, Gaiman, etc;), so I don't trust McFarlane with writing this and being a first timer director on it. Could wind up being edge lord city. That said, Jamie Foxx is a pretty huge get for this.

@tmp3 - He's also talking about losing a big fish, so I wouldn't be surprised if Jamie Foxx opted out. Could be Renner. Either way, anything that causes McFarlane a headache and distress can't be all bad.

Who is more desperate to keep themself relevant by constantly brinning up their fantasy comic book movie, Zack Snyder or Todd McFarlane?

@FinnishDude - it amazes me how you found a way to bring Zack Snyder into a post that neither has him, WB or the DCEU attached to it.

I don’t think this movie is going to happen anytime soon. It just sounds like he has a bunch of ideas and wishes and not a whole lot of things that are concrete.

I enjoy the few Spawn comics ive read, but doubt this movie is happening anytime soon, id be down for a movie with the superhero stuff in the background, focusing on the detectives, but doubt many studios will be that interested and lets face it, Spawn, while he is popular, he doesnt exactly have the popularity and wide appeal of dc and marvel. Hopefully the movie gets made and its good. Wonder if Image will try to start a cinematic universe

@dracula - I’d definitely be interested in an Image cinematic universe.

@WruceBayne - outside of Spawn, what is there worth doing, pretty sure they can throw out anything by Rob leifeld, ive heard most of his stuff is 90’s garbage. Ive heard good things about Shadowhawk and supreme(the alan moore stuff) although would people want to watch Batman and superman knock offs

@WruceBayne - An Image cinematic universe is impossible since every single comic is creator owned, so it'd be rights nightmare. Even beyond that, all their big comics like Spawn, Saga, the Walking Dead and Invinsible take place in their own continuity.

@dracula - Shadowhawk and Supreme movies would definitely get my money.

@tmp3 - if Marvel and Sony could get a deal off the ground I’m sure Image and their respective self created titles could iron out a deal on a much smaller scale.

i can only guess that a "bigger fish" is an actor who could play Sam Burke

This film strikes me as likely to be on the same level as “The Spirit” movie.

@Chewtoy - Oh what a sad, pathetic movie. The golden age pulp detective brainchild of the great Will Eisner should have never been a gritty, Sin City wannabe. It should've been like The Rocketeer

He should really get a co-director like Robert Rodriguez to help with this, it could be like the first Sin City.
