ELECTRO: Sony Pictures Rumored To Be Developing Spinoff With SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Star Jamie Foxx

If you'd asked us if this was a good idea prior to Spider-Man: No Way Home, we'd have probably said "no." After Jamie Foxx's scene-stealing performance, however, this rumour sounds like a great idea...

Spider-Man: No Way Home managed to pull off bringing all those different villains from previous movies together, resulting in arguably the greatest Marvel Comics adaptation to date. Jamie Foxx was far from a highlight in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but the Oscar-winner clearly jumped at the chance of redemption and delivered a scene-stealing performance as the returning Max Dillon.

According to Murphy's Multiverse, "Sony is now interested in developing an Electro solo project starring Foxx." Of all the bad guys we were reintroduced to in the threequel, this one arguably makes the most sense for his own spinoff, and the consequences of could be huge.

As part of the same world as Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, the door could be open to his take on the web-slinger showing up to guide Electro in wherever this story takes him. Foxx and Marvel Studios essentially rebooted Max in Spider-Man: No Way Home, injecting some attitude and humour into the rogue and stealing the show at times in the process. 

If this Electro movie happens, then it would join an expanding slate of movies set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Morbius is heading our way next year, while the likes of Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and Spider-Woman are all in various stages of development. Ultimately, this spinoff sounds like the perfect opportunity to bring Garfield's Peter Parker back to the big screen as well, but we'll have to treat this as a rumor for the time being.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - All of Sony's decisions are made out of the pursuit of money. They'll squeeze the properties they own for everything they're worth, and they never learn from their failures, and the financial success of the Venom movies has only encouraged them.

@KWilly - I loved him in this, hated him in asm2, he was a cut and copy past of the Riddler from Batman Forever but Jim did it better and even then it wasn't a great plot point.

Electro wasn't even really the same character in the two films. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he was implied to be a schizophrenic. He had delusions about a friendship with Spider-Man, heard voices in his head (integrated into the soundtrack), and reacted in irrational and paranoid ways. There's a deleted scene where he's talking to himself as Spider-Man and he thinks Spider-Man is going to show up to his birthday party.

In No Way Home, he's a perfectly sane individual for some reason.

Honestly, my only complaint with the movie is that all of the multiverse characters were inauthentic and off-base.

• Electro is no longer schizophrenic for some reason.
• The Lizard didn't die in The Amazing Spider-Man, his voice is supposed to be modulated in lizard form, and he seemed way more intelligent and articulate. His motivation from that movie was also ignored.
• Doc Ock willingly sacrificed himself in a redemption arc, and he's suddenly evil again? And wants tritium again after deliberately giving up his dreams for the greater good?
• Why can't Sandman appear human anymore? Other than that, he was alright.
• The Green Goblin was way more cunning and intelligent in the 2002 movie, and he had actual motivations. Here, he seems to be a non-threat generic insane guy. He gets the drop on Spider-Man once and that's it. Tom Holland even effortless beats the crap out of him without a real fight. Anyone whose seen Spider-Man (2002) knows that's bullshit. Norman's reaction to the multiverse was plausible, but other than that. Even the suit seemed inaccurate somehow (was it too shiny?).
• Now that Dock Ock has established that Norman being the Green Goblin and killing himself was a news headline in the Raimiverse, Harry's revenge arc is retroactively hilarious.
• Magic and the Avengers supposedly don't exist in the Raimiverse, but Doctor Strange was mentioned in Spider-Man 2. SMH.

Thankfully, they got Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield right.

I figured out the issue with Sony’s Spidey movies they’ve been trying since Venom came out. They can’t use Spider-Man so far, so they’re making a cinematic universe centered around villains. But nobody wants to watch six or seven movies about bad guys being bad, at least Hollywood thinks as much.

So they turn them into anti-heroes or in Venom’s case even superheroes. Morbius, Kraven will be more of the same. It doesn’t make sense and something will always feel off about these characters as long as this is their model. This isn’t Suicide Squad. Most of these characters exist to dislike Spider-Man. There’s pitting a sympathetic villain against a hero and then there’s makin a movie about a heroic villain which really hasn’t worked for them so far.

TASM3 - 100% on board with as long as Marvel have involvement. Electro solo film, not in a million years. Sony need to calm down. Thinking there’s no such thing as too much sugar in a cake. They’re getting excessive again. They’ve got a wonderful opportunity on their hands right now to ride this high. Tom in the MCU. TASM3 and Andrew in the Sonyverse. Then Spider-Verse things with Tom, Andrew and Tobey with possibilities of more villain crossovers and other Spider-People. Don’t be making shit from doors that are now closed.

I mean I get it! The film was amazing

But a solo electro spin off ! He’s not even that interesting as a character

Allot of these villains work well with spider man they don’t work well without him

Just my opinion but the two venom movies and I mean I love Tom hardy

@Iports - Agreed. As a big Tom Hardy fan and a big Marvel fan you'd think Venom would be one of my favorite movies. But leave it to Sony to deliver something with so much potential as something so underwhelming. I reeeeeally wish Marvel Studios gave us a proper Venom with a proper storyline.

These rumors aren't much to shake a stick at. After any success it's worth having some exploratory conversations to see what might be. Doesn't mean they'll move forward and going through that creative process is a great thing.

Plus, if they actually get a really really good idea, and they can execute on it, it always could be a movie we never knew we wanted. Execution is everything.

Ah yes, a spin-off on a villain that has had no real solo stories to pull from, and received a satisfying conclusion. Makes sense.

I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Jamie Foxx as Electro if they’re so keen to bring him back, but a solo project is not the way to do it. Morbius and Venom are one thing, even Kraven I suppose, but I just can’t see how this would work
