THUNDERBOLTS* Ending Explained: A Surprising Twist Pulled Straight From The Comics - SPOILERS

Thunderbolts* fan screenings took place earlier this week (and are currently being held in Japan), meaning spoilers have found their way online much sooner than normal.

That's the cost of attempting to build early buzz, but it does seem to have paid off, given how much excitement currently surrounds the next Marvel Studios movie. Some of you will have already seen Thunderbolts*, while we've no doubt that many of you are keen to know what's on the way.

So, let's delve into the last Phase 5 movie's finale.

During the movie's conclusion, the Thunderbolts confront Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and find themselves forced to do battle with The Sentry's darker half, The Void (you can read more about that here).

The heroes enter the physical manifestation of The Void and help Bob escape the darkness within him. New York is saved, and the hapless Sentry is left pretty confused by the destruction he's surrounded by.

Val created The Sentry by experimenting on people like Bob, an ex-drug addict, and the team sets out to bring her to justice.

However, they're fooled into walking straight into a press conference where she immediately introduces them as the "New Avengers." Val tells the press that she was working on their formation in secret, saving her job and reputation in the process.

However, as Yelena Belova quietly points out to her, the team "owns" her now; that likely means the CIA Director will fund the group and allow them to work out of The Watchtower. In exchange, they'll keep her secret and serve as the MCU's New Avengers.

If this press conference sounds familiar, it's because it appears to have been inspired by two specific comic book moments from Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers and Dark Avengers runs:

In Thunderbolts*, Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes - Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?

The cast of Thunderbolts* will be led by Florence Pugh as Yelena Boleva, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Lewis Pullman as "Bob."

Written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo, and directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is currently set to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.

Again, I think I’ll see the movie first before reading an article like this. It’s not even out yet in the states.

Interesting , I like that twist…

I enjoy how it acts in a way as a dark mirror to the original Avengers team with Val at the center as a more morally ambiguous Nick Fury.

Hell , Nick could be that but his intentions were always the best while Val seems more mysterious still & nefarious with the tension between her & the team now that they have something on her so she is forced to work with them for now and vice versa.

It’s in more grey territory then the OG’s which was more noble which works for these characters.

For the people complaining- there’s a spoiler tag at the headline and top of the article and you still proceed to click on it and read it

Where is your self control?

@ShimmyShimmyYA - they need to blame someone for their lack of self-control. They are probably super fat and blame the world, hasn't had sex since childhood if ever and blames women. I say if you don't have self control over what you choose to look at you're a weak POS and no one respects you.

@RacialPowerman - it’s kind of crazy and then think they’re “calling him out” for something they could easily avoid. Don’t want the spoilers? Don’t read the article or visit the site acting like they’re children

Dude, what is with all the spoiler articles? I clicked and went straight to the comments to say you are kind of being a dick about this. It is really hard as a fan to avoid spoilers, why are you making it harder. Might have to stop visiting this site.

@Shivermetimbers - Dude, there's not a single spoiler on this site other than inside the articles themselves. If you're dumb enough to click on them just because you want to insult me, that's on YOU.

@Shivermetimbers - He does it specifically because people complain about it…Simple as that

Assholes gonna asshole every chance they get…Especially when people call them out on their crap

Shivermetimbers - 4/24/2025, 1:34 PM
@JoshWilding - Thats my point, you are creating spoiler articles. The people who visit this site are ravenous fans that come here multiple times a day and the temptation of having multiple spoiler articles a week before the launch of a huge movie is pretty bad for some people. I have that self-control, but many don't and that doesn't make them dumb. You know what you are doing. The articles could wait, if you are dumb enough to not realize that, then that is on YOU.

JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 1:37 PM
@Shivermetimbers - That sounds like a them problem, not a me problem. The numbers speak for themselves: people love these articles and want to read them. They don't want to read them AFTER a movie is released. And I think you misread my comments. I didn't call them dumb, I called you dumb for crying about spoilers, but still clicking on an article where you could be exposed to them because you wanted to fling abuse at me. How sad.

@JoshWilding - “ If you're dumb enough”
Nothing in the comment you’re replying to requires that level of childish rudeness.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: your insecurities REALLY show when you get so obviously defensive. It’s as if you realize there’s truth to what you’re being called out for…
