THUNDERBOLTS* Ending Explained: A Surprising Twist Pulled Straight From The Comics - SPOILERS

Thunderbolts* delivers some huge surprises, including an unexpected twist ending that borrows heavily from a couple of specific comic books. You can find a full breakdown of the ending right here...

Thunderbolts* fan screenings took place earlier this week (and are currently being held in Japan), meaning spoilers have found their way online much sooner than normal.

That's the cost of attempting to build early buzz, but it does seem to have paid off, given how much excitement currently surrounds the next Marvel Studios movie. Some of you will have already seen Thunderbolts*, while we've no doubt that many of you are keen to know what's on the way.

So, let's delve into the last Phase 5 movie's finale.

During the movie's conclusion, the Thunderbolts confront Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and find themselves forced to do battle with The Sentry's darker half, The Void (you can read more about that here).

The heroes enter the physical manifestation of The Void and help Bob escape the darkness within him. New York is saved, and the hapless Sentry is left pretty confused by the destruction he's surrounded by.

Val created The Sentry by experimenting on people like Bob, an ex-drug addict, and the team sets out to bring her to justice.

However, they're fooled into walking straight into a press conference where she immediately introduces them as the "New Avengers." Val tells the press that she was working on their formation in secret, saving her job and reputation in the process.

However, as Yelena Belova quietly points out to her, the team "owns" her now; that likely means the CIA Director will fund the group and allow them to work out of The Watchtower. In exchange, they'll keep her secret and serve as the MCU's New Avengers.

If this press conference sounds familiar, it's because it appears to have been inspired by two specific comic book moments from Brian Michael Bendis' New Avengers and Dark Avengers runs:

In Thunderbolts*, Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes - Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster and John Walker. After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.

Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?

The cast of Thunderbolts* will be led by Florence Pugh as Yelena Boleva, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Lewis Pullman as "Bob."

Written by Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo, and directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* is currently set to be released in theaters on May 2, 2025.

Again, I think I’ll see the movie first before reading an article like this. It’s not even out yet in the states.

Josh, why are you spoiling it for everyone? This is so dumb.

@MR -

If even one person has seen the movie at any point in the past four mobths, can anything in it truly be considered a spoiler?

He does this with every movie.

It's maddening because it would be great to be able to come into an article like this and have real conversations about the movies ending, but literally none of us have even seen it.

@TrentCrimm - It's just straight up inconsiderate, immature, and selfish. I'll say it again, this guy and this website really doesn't support the superhero movie genre. I don't even see the point of this website.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 1:24 PM
@MR - Why did you click on this article if you don't want to read the spoilers? Many, many people do. If they open a KFC on your street and you're on a diet, you can just walk on by. No one is forcing you to go in.

@JoshWilding - I haven't read this "article" but I felt the need to respond to it because it's ridiculous that no one has even seen this movie and you're posting spoilers. There are probably inaccuracies anyway after we have to wade through rehash upon rehash. Stuff that has been posted time and time again. As I've said before, this website needs too be cleaned up. It's messy.
I've stopped clicking on anything that says Spoliers or rumour quite a while ago and I would hope that readers of this website would too. I mean, the dang movie isn't EVEN OUT!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 2:15 PM
@MR - It sounds to me like you're taking the right approach. If you don't want to read it, don't click (if you don't want to shop at Target, don't set foot through the door). But don't stop the people who do want to read (do want to go into the store).

This site is still the #1 source for CBM news, anyway. CBR and Screen Rant have been ruined by corporations. SuperHeroHype is AI-world. Newsarama is Total Film-lite. ComicBook is ass.

@JoshWilding - Agreed. I got into this site because I was looking for spoiler articles at one point a couple years back and it kept leading me here, and it ended up becoming my most visited site.

@FrankenDad - Glad to hear it! Hopefully, you find plenty here to enjoy. As a fan myself, these spoilers have got me crazy excited for the movie. And I'd rather read this article than head to "Comic Book Resources" for this...

You're assuming any of them at this point deserve any amount of success after what the people at Disney did to their major franchises.

Interesting , I like that twist…

I enjoy how it acts in a way as a dark mirror to the original Avengers team with Val at the center as a more morally ambiguous Nick Fury.

Hell , Nick could be that but his intentions were always the best while Val seems more mysterious still & nefarious with the tension between her & the team now that they have something on her so she is forced to work with them for now and vice versa.

It’s in more grey territory then the OG’s which was more noble which works for these characters.

For the people complaining- there’s a spoiler tag at the headline and top of the article and you still proceed to click on it and read it

Where is your self control?
RacialPowerman
RacialPowerman - 4/24/2025, 1:40 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - they need to blame someone for their lack of self-control. They are probably super fat and blame the world, hasn't had sex since childhood if ever and blames women. I say if you don't have self control over what you choose to look at you're a weak POS and no one respects you.
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 4/24/2025, 1:50 PM
@RacialPowerman - it’s kind of crazy and then think they’re “calling him out” for something they could easily avoid. Don’t want the spoilers? Don’t read the article or visit the site acting like they’re children
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 4/24/2025, 1:15 PM
Dude, what is with all the spoiler articles? I clicked and went straight to the comments to say you are kind of being a dick about this. It is really hard as a fan to avoid spoilers, why are you making it harder. Might have to stop visiting this site.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 1:23 PM
@Shivermetimbers - Dude, there's not a single spoiler on this site other than inside the articles themselves. If you're dumb enough to click on them just because you want to insult me, that's on YOU.
vegetaray
vegetaray - 4/24/2025, 1:31 PM
@Shivermetimbers - He does it specifically because people complain about it…Simple as that

Assholes gonna asshole every chance they get…Especially when people call them out on their crap
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 4/24/2025, 1:34 PM
@JoshWilding - Thats my point, you are creating spoiler articles. The people who visit this site are ravenous fans that come here multiple times a day and the temptation of having multiple spoiler articles a week before the launch of a huge movie is pretty bad for some people. I have that self-control, but many don't and that doesn't make them dumb. You know what you are doing. The articles could wait, if you are dumb enough to not realize that, then that is on YOU.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 1:37 PM
@Shivermetimbers - That sounds like a them problem, not a me problem. The numbers speak for themselves: people love these articles and want to read them. They don't want to read them AFTER a movie is released. And I think you misread my comments. I didn't call them dumb, I called you dumb for crying about spoilers, but still clicking on an article where you could be exposed to them because you wanted to fling abuse at me. How sad.
DTor91
DTor91 - 4/24/2025, 1:38 PM
@JoshWilding - “ If you're dumb enough”
Nothing in the comment you’re replying to requires that level of childish rudeness.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: your insecurities REALLY show when you get so obviously defensive. It’s as if you realize there’s truth to what you’re being called out for…
MakeAmericaGrea
MakeAmericaGrea - 4/24/2025, 1:39 PM
@Shivermetimbers -

Do I remember right that Josh has straight up had spoilers in headlines and pictures on the main page?
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 1:42 PM
@DTor91 - Oh, get real. The guy doesn't want to be spoiled, but clicked on the article to call me a "dick." I know exactly when, how, and where to post articles like this, both to benefit the website and the people who visit. There's a reason this site is getting bigger and bigger each year. Stick to the comments section and let the people who know what they're doing do their thing, yeah?
DTor91
DTor91 - 4/24/2025, 1:47 PM
@JoshWilding - “ Stick to the comments section and let the people who know what they're doing do their thing, yeah?”

LMAO this coming from the guy who guy fails to verify accurate information, STILL posts false rumors and “scoops,” let alone tried to tell ME what isn’t AI in that art article recently when being in comics is my actual profession. [frick] off, Josh. You got called out and can never handle things professionally, as evident in the lack of professionalism with your so-called “news.”
ShimmyShimmyYA
ShimmyShimmyYA - 4/24/2025, 1:49 PM
@DTor91 - but he’s right lol

Nothing is forcing yall to click and read this shit it’s literally your own fault

If you see a puddle of water and still step in it instead walking around it you can’t complain that you got wet
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 4/24/2025, 1:54 PM
@JoshWilding - Talk about misreading comments, I said you are "kind of being a dick", but you are clearly a soft little man-baby who gets incredibly defensive. I also clearly stated that I went straight to the comments, showing that I am smart enough to avoid your pathetic spoilers. I always avoided piling on the criticism of your articles in the past, but now I see it was all very warranted. You've proven to be a douchebag and I am done with this back and forth. Good day.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 1:54 PM
@DTor91 - If articles like these drove people away from the site, I wouldn't post them.

In the mid-2010s, with Civil War and BvS going head-to-head, Marvel vs. DC articles were a big thing...and while they were initially popular in terms of pageviews, it became clear that people didn't like or want them as time went on. I put my hands up then and now, and can admit I made a mistake; that's why you won't see a "8 Reasons Thunderbolts* Is Better Than The Suicide Squad" article from me.

So, yes, stick to the comments section. I won't wander into your "actual profession" of "being in comics," and tell you how to do whatever it is you do because I'm not that ridiculously entitled and delusional.
DTor91
DTor91 - 4/24/2025, 1:55 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I didn’t say whether he was right or wrong. I don’t intend to see this movie so it’s nothing here for me.

But that doesn’t mean the others don’t have a point. The film isn’t available for everyone yet and you go on here and there’s a wall of spoiler articles. At this point even if you go out your way to avoid them, something will slip, and there’s enough to pick up on context. This is a site many people will frequent. Habit and routine plays a factor, even if you’re trying to avoid things you may just instinctively come here because it’s something you check often.
The spoilers have gotten aggressively worse in recent years and you’re someone I’ve also seen on here a lot too. I don’t doubt you’ve also noticed the crazy uptick here.
DTor91
DTor91 - 4/24/2025, 2:02 PM
@JoshWilding - “ I won't wander into your "actual profession" of "being in comics," and tell you how to do whatever it is you do because I'm not that ridiculously entitled and delusional.”
But you did try and dispute me because your ai detectors told you otherwise sooooo…pot calling kettle black and all that.

That being said, something I’ve learned a lot in my career is being open to objective criticism. Even from those that don’t draw themselves. They’ll see things I just miss or get so involved with that I get blind to it. It’s a big help. Sounds like you took that once upon a time too. Maybe it’s you who needs to spend more time in the comments section, there has been actual objective criticism for a good number of years now. But I get it, it’s all about the actual numbers on not keeping a healthy outlook.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 4/24/2025, 2:11 PM
@DTor91 - Sorry, are you not able to cope with someone disagreeing with you or something? You sound very insecure and defensive. I simply stated that, to the best of my knowledge, with the tools I had to hand, the image didn't appear to be AI.

I take feedback and criticism all the time. Someone even said last year that my writing "common sense says" annoyed them, so I stopped doing it because I realised it was a phrase I had been overusing. I've been at this long enough to tell the difference between healthy criticism and trolls.

Writing up rumours like the ones you referred to in a previous post isn't my preference, but the world has changed, and those are a big part of this game now. And with social media being such a threat to websites, if we don't cover those and present them in a way that's better than some clickbait account that usually misinterprets or lies about them in 140 characters, then CBM might as well just shut up shop and become "@CBMUpdates" on X.
