The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with Walt Disney Studios Marketing President Asad Ayaz for a fascinating and insightful conversation about the work that goes into promoting their biggest movies and TV shows. Loki, Black Widow, Eternals, and more were all touched on, but it's his comments about Spider-Man: No Way Home that have really grabbed the attention of many fans.
The desperation for a trailer for the movie has become apparent online, but it seems Sony Pictures is waiting for...something. The prevailing theory is that we need to see more of Loki before the curtain is pulled back on this threequel, but Ayaz explained that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is working closely with Sony on how Spider-Man: No Way Home is marketed.
"Sony is absolutely handling the marketing for Spider-Man," the Walt Disney Studios Marketing head explained. "Kevin Feige and his team are closely partnering with the Sony team on those. So there is coordination in that sense. We also make sure we are aware of who is dropping what when. But we are not working together on the campaigns because it’s their film. They are handling it but there is a level of coordination to make sure that it’s a win-win for everybody."
This is certainly intriguing, and makes sense given how important this movie is likely going to be for Phase 4. It's clear at this point that Spider-Man: No Way Home will explore the Multiverse, and with the Sorcerer Supreme set to appear, it will likely lead directly into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Secrecy is the name of the game with the MCU, though, and Ayaz stressed that this is the case with a movie like Eternals, in particular. "If you saw the Eternals teaser, it really gave nothing away," he said, addressing the unrevealing nature of the trailer. "It’s just an introduction to the characters and tone. It was a very, very early tease. We have so much more to do on that."
We definitely recommend you check out the full interview because it offers a lot of insight into how Disney markets its movies and TV shows, while also teasing what's to come in the rest of 2021.
