SPIDER-MAN: Marvel Was Initially Unhappy About A Certain Death In The PS4 Game - SPOILERS

Spider-Man features arguably one of the greatest stories ever told for the wall-crawler but it's now been revealed that Marvel pushed back when it came to one character death. Find out more after the jump!

Marvel's Spider-Man pays homage to the comic books in a lot of ways but also takes some huge liberties with the source material.

That's not a bad thing, of course, especially as the story is so strong and takes us to a lot of unexpected places. However, if you haven't finished the game, we advise you to stop reading this article!

Still here? Well, as you'll recall, the game ends with Doctor Octopus unleashing Devil's Breath on New York and Peter Parker is faced with a choice: save his Aunt May or the rest of the city. May then reveals that she's known all about him being Spider-Man and tells him to do the right thing before dying.

Now, Spider-Man voice actor Yuri Lowenthal has revealed that Marvel Comics initially told Insomniac that they couldn't kill Peter's Aunt and it was only after development had continued for a while that the decision was made that, yes, they could move forward with this ending.

It's interesting that Marvel was initially against this but May is such a huge part of Spider-Man canon, they were clearly reluctant about changing things too much (despite the fact the character is currently battling cancer in the comics). Do you think this was the right ending for Spider-Man?

As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on that in the comments section below.

Wish they killed MJ instead. Hated her boring, redundant missions

Now that the Spider-Verse has gone mainstream, I think players (not to mention movie audiences) will be accepting of choices that deviate greatly from the established 616 canon.

@NoAssemblyReqd - yes like having a racially ambiguous MJ, or a spiderman coached by Iron man. I've longed accepted that spiderman, more than any other hero, is changing with the times to suit the younger generation

Aunt May's death is necessary for the character to evolve past a certain point. Aunt May serves as one of the few aspects in the game that forces Peter to live a normal life. Without Aunt May to tether him to normal life, will Peter devote all of his life to Spider-man? Will he have Mary Jane or Miles as a tether instead.

It allows for the next story to focus more around the normal life/superhero life of Miles (if they wish to adapt that) while having Spider-man dealing with a more Superhero vs Supervillain focused storyline.

Although throughout the game the stakes didn't feel really high, that last mission was pretty intense. Especially the voice acting in the scenes was top notch. Anyway, I prefered the ending of the game over Homecoming's

Why tho? They apparently wanted Insomniac to create their own canon, but one which had to include May? What?

Of course Marvel would be unhappy with killing Aunt May.

Part of the reason that Spider-man PS4 is such a good game is because it was One More Day but done right.

That last scene has one of the best voice acting i've ever seen in a game.

All praises to this god.

I hate to say that they made the right call, but that scene was honestly, literally the only time a video game has actually made me cry. Like sobbing, ugly crying. On all four playthroughs. Well done, Insomniac. And thank you for relenting, Marvel.

Marvel really hates letting Aunt May die, don't they. Let her go. It's ok. It's good for his character evolution. Spider-Man/Peter Parker always works best when he's evolving and growing. As he was doing quite well until Joe Quesada.

My favorite scene is during the final battle when Peter says "You were everything I wanted to be!".

The emotion in his voice made me tear up. It also brings home that Peter's idea of success is helping people and not himself.

That's why Insomniac's Peter looked up to Doc Ock and Aunt May instead of Norman Osborn and Tony Stark.

May-be they made the right choice, May-be they didn't. Just don't make it Marisa To-Mei.
