Amazing Spider-man Teaser Impresssions

Amazing Spider-man Teaser Impresssions

My thoughts on the teaser trailer and what it says about the re-imaginied Spider-man.

Editorial Opinion

Main points:

The teaser emphasized the difference from the Raimi trilogy.

It's interesting that they're going deeper into Peter's history and showing the story of his parents.

I still don't think it's a good idea to re-tell the origin.

Despite the teaser's serious tone, I still hope the movie will capture the humor of Spider-man in a way the previous movies never really managed to.

@ BIGBMH: Nice, you make some good points.
Regarding the origin, many people feel it should be "skipped" but this is a new telling of the story with new actors so it has to be redone, there is no way around it, Peter's journey through the experience is key to the character's story. Trust me if they skipped it or cheaped out on it, it would not work.

Regarding the humour, I am a fan of Spidey's one-liners and wisecracks as much as anyone, but I wonder if they work better in comic or animated form than in live-action? Would a guy in what are usually pretty serious life or death fights be making jokes? (other than to manipulate and anger his enemy, I know). I'm reminded of a scene from the Spectacular animated series when the black suit took over and took Peter out to do some ass-kicking, and Ock commented that he knew he was serious about the fight because he wasn't cracking his usual jokes. Something to think about.

I think the best way to go about it is to take a lesson from the ultimate universe, peter joked around because it was a way for him to cope with the insanity going around him, it was his second nature to make wise cracks and it was also a fighting technique he used to make sure the he drew the attention onto him, and away from civilians, it was implemented best that way in my opinion,

Although I do love dan slotts way of going about things to, it really makes him seem a bit cockier and more experienced, while aggravating his enemies making them angry and lose sight of the smaller things.

I'm not into what I've seen so far, but I'm still gonna see it.

Being a former producer myself, I just can't wrap my ahead around why anybody group of exec's would take a film franchise like this (Spidey 3 was like the 19th highest grossing film of all time!...nearly a billion dollars worldwide!) and just scrap the whole operation to "re-boot"?! The reason behind a re-boot when it's done in film is to correct something that wasn't working...the Spider-man films were clearly working. The trailer looked okay, but it also looked liked they may be screwing with it to a point it ruins something for Spidey fans like me.A point was made up above about seeing more of Spidey's humor...and that was a good point...this trailer makes me think they might just be taking it in just the opposite direction and we get to witness even less of of that humor and more tragedy and sadness or whatever. Not the direction to go in my opinion with Spider-man. Just not clear on the whole point of restarting the franchise all over again anyway...dumb move if you ask me. :( Rumor had it we were just about to see the Sinister Six finally in Spider-man 4...what a loss. The studio was even geard for a 5th and 6th already. What do we get to see now? Lizard...maybe the Proto-Goblin (who I've never even heard of before and seriously doubt unless you are a very active Spider-man comic-book reader you have either). All the studio had to do was push the release date back and Raimi would've stayed. Comes down not to what the fans want, but how fast a director can make the studio (and their exec's) money. Who knows...maybe "The Amazing Spider-man" will surprise us somehow. In a situation like this though, I would've just given the proven director the time to do it right and keep the working franchise on track instead of throwing hands up in the air to stay firm on a May 2012 release date and start all over again.

@Spider-fan35, I get your point, but I think The Incredible Hulk did a good job of making you feel like you didn't miss much. That movie's prior origin story wasn't nearly as well known or well received,

@ BIGBMH: Yeaaahhh, but TIH was presented more as a sequel that just happened to have new actors and everything looking completely different. TAS is a complete re-boot going back to the beginning.
I see your point that it could possibly be done without the origin but don't you think it would be weird if the movie just opened with Garfield swinging around? And if they are trying to show the Lizard and Peter becoming what they are together would that mean no Lizard origin either or does he become the Lizard while Spidey is hanging around waiting? I guess I look at it from the perspective that every new version, be it Ultimate comics or another new animated series, starts with the origin to make you feel like you are taking the journey from the start even though you already know the basic premise.
Anyway, obviously it's in the movie so I win (just kidding). I enjoy the debate, keep up the good work.

I guess the Spectacular Spider-man series started with him having become Spidey very recently so they might have gotten away with that. But it's a movie and I'm sure the creative team and director etc wanted to do an origin for their take on the story blah blah.
OK I change my mind the origin is unnecessary lol.
