BOX OFFICE: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Kicks Off Its International Opening With $50M

Despite some sceptics doubting that The Amazing Spider-Man would make a significant impact at the box office, it has now been revealed (via @giteshpandya) that the reboot is off to an impressive start, taking over $50 million in only 13 international territories. The film will begin rolling out in larger markets such as North America and the United Kingdom from this Tuesday. It made the most in Korea ($13.4 million), although Japan followed closely behind with $11.4 million. Surprisingly, it was in India that the film made the biggest impact, not with the largest amount (£6 million) but still the highest ever for an American film and 73% bigger than both Spider-Man 3 and Marvel's The Avengers. Moviegoers have clearly missed seeing the wallcrawler on the big screen!

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

STARRING:

Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors/The Lizard
Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben
Sally Fields as Aunt May
Denis Leary as George Stacy

RELEASE DATE: July 3rd, 2012.

Bam. Haters be gone. The underestimated underdog isn't so small of a threat to its superhero movie counterparts now.

"i reckon the avengers being so good has clearly kick started the foreign countries kids into saying mum i want to see more!"

Definetly! and not only the kids.

Avengers have oppened doors for superhero movies.

Lets hope all the studios take a good advantage and make GREAT movies since now

I don't think anyone really missed SpiderMan cuz its just 5 years from the last movie!!

The success is inevitable of every spiderman film; cuz he's a bloody famous & HUGE character!
That's what SONY knows!!
New films are coming even quicker!!

There's no doubt that the Batman films and The Avengers helped this along. None. But the previous Spider-man movies were the best CBMs before them (Spider-man 3 being the exception) and they obviously deserve a lot of the credit. No matter who's involved, people seemingly like watching their friendly neighborhood Spidey swing into action. Just like them, I love seeing my favorite comic book character(s) brought to life. Can't wait.

Spider-man is the most popular American superhero in these markets. There's a reason that (before Avengers) it had the largest international box office for a super hero flick. The Dark Knight didn't even come close to matching the Spider-man 3 overseas.

And the "surprising" result from India likely has to do with Bollywood star Irrfan Khan being in it, I would think.

The Amazing Spider-man should do well overseas and come in a bit deflated in the US compared to prior entries.

And for those wondering why Japan gets Spider-man early but Avengers has to wait until August, here are some comparable box office TOTAL grosses for superhero flicks in Japan:

Spider-man 3: $58m
The Dark Knight: $14.5m
Iron Man 2: $12.8
Thor: $5.7

Also, for comparison's sake, the last Pirates of the Caribbean flick made $108.9m there, and the last Harry Potter flick made $124.3m there.

So they like Spider-man, don't really care about Batman and barely even noticed that some of the films leading up to The Avengers were released.

Spider-man will likely destroy both the Avengers and Batman in Japan.

@SuspenseSmith Yes everybody loves Spider-man with movies or not, but the first 2 movies were pretty good and popular too. It's not like Spider-man films are all garbage.

Spider-man has an Indian version, maybe that's why he is so popular there.

Hypocrites, now everybodies on the Webb/Garfield banwagon after crucifying it long before it came out, I was always looking forward to this reboot unlike ummm... all of you, cause I never liked the way Raimi portayed his Spider-man (too campy and soft).

The Amazing Spider-man is what I hoped the Raimi movies would be but in the end it just disappointed me but I had to deal with that because it was the only live action version of the character there was, not bad movies just disapointing.
