Did Marc Webb Hint That THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Sequel Is Part of the MCU?

Via Twitter, a recent tweet made by Marc Webb alludes to The Amazing Spider-Man sequel as being part of an expanded universe, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It's no secret that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN had almost been connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Disney/Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures agreed to include OsCorp Tower as an Easter egg in THE AVENGERS. Unfortunately, timing constraints forced the studios to scrap the idea. Since then, TASM producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach has showed interest in continuing there relationship with Disney/Marvel by incorporating Marvel Easter eggs into TASM sequels, Andrew Garfield has expressed interest in being in an Avengers sequel multiple times, and director Webb wasn't shy to admitting he wanted to acknowledge a larger universe in the Blu-ray/DVD commentary of the film. Marc Webb's latest tweet, in response to Sean O'Connell's tweet that Marc Webb is planning to make a massive Spider-Man universe on film, rather cryptically could foreshadow Spider-Man will debut in Marvel's expanded universe.

Some recent transactions between Disney/Marvel and Sony has made fans' spider senses tingle. Of course Disney bought the merchandise rights to the Spider-Man franchise, and it is widely speculated that part of the deal allows them the use of Spider-Man in some form. A character in Marvel Studios' short film ITEM 47 can be seen wearing an Empire State University t-shirt (ESU's film rights are owned by Columbia Pictures/Sony), and ESU should be familiar to Spidey fans as the college Peter Parker attends. A deleted scene from TASM shows Dr. Curt Connors mentioning ESU, and it is rumored The Amazing Spider-Man 2 may feature the school. Even more tantalizing, Target's recent commercial featuring Iron Man and Spider-Man was, for lack of a better word, odd. OsCorp Tower was in fact going to appear in The Avengers, so there it's very plausible that Spider-Man's presence in the MCU could be solidified in TASM2.

If anything that sounds like we are going to get spin-off movies based around the core Spider-man movies, rather than joining another expanded universe.

@LEVITIKUZ Spider-man can hold his own in a singular universe. Even in the comics his place in the marvel universe is much like daredevil's, punisher's and the x-men's, in that they don't interact with the larger marvel universe that much, well at least until before nearly every superhero in the marvel universe became an avenger.

If its true and spidey does become part if the MCU, I would much rather see him and daredevil crossover rather than him become an avenger. Also if they are supposedly doing civil war as avengers 3 they do need spider-man considering how big of a part he plays in it. I'd also love to see an adaption of worlds most wanted for iron man 4, and that could be possible if this is true.

The only thing bigger than Spiderman's own universe is the current MCU but I'm not gonna get my hopes up... I see this as being just a strong thought of Marc or possibly some talks with some other heads

What the tweet means is that Spider-Man is going to have an expansive, cohesive universe akin to what Fox is doing for X-Men. Besides, Spider-Man is at his best when he is alone so I'm glad he won't be coming together with the MCU.

Ok, this is really stretching almost no information into hopeful thinking. If it does indeed turn out to be the case, great, but as of now this annoys me to make such a leap. Also, CoolantTech, I pity you and the rest users that litter this site with sexual images.

I'd just like Spidey in the MCU. He doesn't need to join the Avengers (not yet), but he should at least show up every once in a while. But keep the Spidey movies its own thing. I don't want Iron Man showing up to help him fight Electro.

I am just shocked with his response to that article from cinemablend where the writer talks about how they might expand the it like how fox is doing with x-men and marvel with the avengers with their own universe but marc simply implied THINK BIGGER which means that its going beyond the massive spiderman universe.

read it all below.

Spiderman in a cameo in Avengers doesn't mean that he would become an avenger. It would be great if the Spiderman, X-men and Avengers universes would be connected.
Altough the tweet is only about the Spiderman Universe, not the Marvel universe

@jimoakley666 100% agree. The only character I'd like to see spidey crossover with is daredevil. But if its true Disney and marvel are going to want him in the avengers 2, because let's face it as popular as Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk have become because if the avengers, they're not In the same league as Spider-Man. If spidey was on the team for avengers 2 they could market the movie on him and iron man alone.

I hope it's true that they link the two universes, but I don't want Spider-Man to become an Avenger.

As long as Sony holds rights to Spiderman he will never be a part of MCU, and personally think that Spiderman shouldn't ever become a member of Avengers in MCU.

dancingmonkey08 - 1/31/2013, 6:47 AM
oh good god, is this actually happening? my hope for a Sony Spider-Man to appear in the MCU started when they rebooted Spidey, I hoped with the start of a new continuity and the new Spidey movies fitting in tonally with the MCU, I thought it was more of a possibility. This became more likely when they said that the Oscorp Tower was originally going to be in the Avengers and now Webb is hinting at it! PLEASE PLEASE let it be true, Im not accepting it as truth yet, but I hold out hope

BUT I 100% AGREE with Jerbear, sKeemAn, superherofan21, happy11, DrStrange and jimoakley666, NO SPIDEY IN THE AVENGERS YET!

I had this idea that (sorta like the Ultimates), Spidey is too young and inexperienced to join the Avengers so Fury keeps an eye on his battles against various supervillains but never intervenes unless things get really bad. Then after a six-movie story arc about Peter growing up and learning about great responsibility the hard way (after losing Uncle Ben, Captain Stacy & Gwen) and battling against the Sinister Six (in a sixth and final Spidey movie after 5 movies of carefully setting the villains up), Nick is finally convinced Spidey is fit to join the Avengers.

Also, when it comes to the timeline of the MCU, set The Amazing Spider-Man two years after the alien invasion of the Avengers (because if the Amazing Spider-Man is set before the Avengers, then people are going to be asking where the hell was he in the Avengers, its not like War Machine where he was miles away from the battle!) so they can give it time for the alien invasion to be cleaned up. Then set the Amazing Spider-Man sequel six months after the original

BUT I also fully agree with what Spideyguy94, jimoakley666 and superherofan21 have said, if Spider-Man is put in the MCU, DONT HAVE A MILLION AVENGERS CROSSOVERS, keep Spidey in his own corner of the MCU. Use Spidey as a test for future movies such as Dr Strange, the Heroes For Hire, Daredevil and Punisher, where (just like the 616 universe mostly pre-2000) they exist in the same MCU but very rarely interact with the Avengers

Spidey should get six movies that fit in with the MCU and have veiled references to the other heroes but they arent appearing every two minutes in the Spidey movies. Then after six movies of growing up, we end up with a more skilled and confident Spidey who joins the Avengers. This would be good for Sony too as after six movies, Spidey would begin to get played out, they could get a cut of the profits of a potential Avengers 4 or 5

Oh and keep each member of the Avengers away from New York for the foreseeable future so there doesnt have to be continuity [frick]-ups, theres plenty of other cities for the Avengers to fight in, I think we saw enough of New York in the first movie

BUT ALSO, on the otherhand, as Jaspion and mk have said, they will have to vastly improve the sequel of the Amazing Spider-Man to match the quality of the MCU. I personally really liked the Amazing Spider-Man but it didnt blow me away like past MCU movies have and this was due to a sense of "been there, done that" of the origin story and even the Lizard seemed to have a cliched story. The sequel will have to try and match the quality of Raimi's first two movies and most of the MCU's movies so far to even be fit to be in the MCU

AND HAVE ANDREW GARFIELD APPEAR IN THE SHIELD TV SERIES TOO!

Sorry for the long rant, but I really want things to work out and Spidey to find his proper place in the MCU while not bringing down the quality of the rest of the MCU.

@dcjohnny, god no, I love Hugh as Wolverine, but he and his [frick]ed up universe's continuity needs to be kept far away from the MCU, I dont care if Days of Future Past fixes everything, its still Fox and it has no place sharing the MCU, leave them with their own cinematic universe!

I have a feeling that Mark Millar coming to Fox is going to be great, not only for the movies but because of his relationship with Marvel. We are going to be seeing more intermingling within Marvel.

Its obvious that Marvel wants to include its number one son in their grand motion picture designs, and Sony would be foolish not to partner up. It would be a huge pay off for both studios.

For those of you begging for the powers to not make Spider-man an Avenger, check the pages Spider-man is an Avenger and has been for decades. He's what they consider a Reserve Avenger. It would only make sense that they put him in an Avenger movie but at the end he say it's all too big for him to be a permanent member but they can call him for help. I hope they include Spidey into the MCU
