How Close Did Jamie Bell Come to Portraying Spider-Man?

Jamie bell recently sat down for an interview with VULTURE. For the most part the interview was about anything and everything concerning his latest gig in Kevin Macdonald's film The Eagle. He also discussed recently shooting The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn with Spielberg. Near the end of the interview however, VULTURE not only asks him about past rumors that he was indeed up for the part of Peter Parker in Marc Webb's new Spider-Man film but also about the current trend of British actors playing comic book heroes on screen.

It was rumored for a while that you were in contention for the title role in Marc Webb's Spider-Man. How far did that go?

Really far. I screen-tested and everything.

Did you get to wear the suit?

No, they didn't do that in the screen test. We did a bunch of scenes with Marc, and I was one of many people who did it. It was a great experience, a great opportunity.

There were several Brits up for that role, and it went to the British actor Andrew Garfield, as did Superman just recently, to Henry Cavill. What is it about young British men that makes them suddenly a perfect fit for these American superheroes?

You know, I'm not too sure, actually. The truth is, if you're [Sony chief] Amy Pascal, I think you just go, "God, Andrew's a great actor." That was a no-brainer, and I think it was a really great piece of casting, to be honest. Marc was a great director in the small time I got to work with him, so I think it'll be fantastic. I don't know much about ... is it Henry?

Henry Cavill, yeah.

No, I don't know much about him, but I don't know. They're obviously good actors.

Even the short list for the female lead in Superman is mostly Brits.

Is that right? We're gonna start upsetting people soon. [Laughs.] The Screen Actors Guild is gonna be like, "No Brits! Stop them!"

Hawksblueyes: Personally, I think Garfield is the best thing about the reboot but Bell would have been an interesting choice.

Personally, yes, I do think that Andrew Garfield was absolutely the perfect person to play Peter Parker, not only because of his performances in "Never Let Me Go" and "The Social Network", but also because he's been a huge fan of the character his entire life, and know's the ins-and-outs of what everyone is expecting from him.

However, Jamie Bell would've been a pretty excellent choice, as well. I haven't seen him in much, but he definitely is talented. He might just be a little too handsome, though.

I think Andy was great choice, but i kinda would have preferred Jake Gyllenhaal as Spider-Man

And then i would have adapt the clone saga to the big screen.
FIRST MOVIE (Knowledging the Powers): The Lizard, Kraven and Norman Osborn (As the side villain)
SECOND MOVIE (The Death of Gwen): Green Goblin and Miles Warren aka The Jackal (As the side villain)
THIRD MOVIE (Gwen Comes Back. The Birth of Ben Reilly aka The Scarlet Spider): The Jackal, Scarlet Spider and Chameleon (I dont know why but it would be cool if The Jackal would give Chameleon his powers so this can revenge to Spidey the death of his brother Kraven. Scarlet Spider would be manipulated by The Jackal to be on his side at first but finally turns his jacket and helps the real Spidey. They defeated the villains together. Scarlet creates the identity of Ben Reilly and leaves.)

I know im not the best writer but hey it could work if its don right?... Right?!:D lol

By the way isnt The Eagle the movie of Kevin MacDonald and not Spielberg? Or is Spielberg the producer or something?

ive been a fan of Jamie Bell since "Billy Elliot". not sure if he wouldve been right for spidey.

but one thing with the hyphenated nationalities, referring to someone as they are from here-there or there\here...Whoopi Goldberg, a hard-to-the-core liberal, once said "I am not Afro-American. I just American." I am of Irish decent and i am proud of that, but i dont refer to myself as Irish-American. I am an United States American. Thank you. Ill shut up now.
