RUMOR: Sony Developing An R-Rated SPIDER-MAN Movie Possibly Revolving Around SPIDER-PUNK

A crazy new rumour is doing the rounds online today which claims Sony Pictures Animation is moving forward with an R-Rated Spider-Man movie which could put the spotlight on Spider-Punk. Check it out...

Both Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were critical and commercial hits. Understandably, fans can't wait to see how the story concludes in the currently undated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, but what comes after that?

There have been rumblings about a female-led Spider-Woman spin-off for the past few years; unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have gone anywhere and Sony's plans for its stable of Marvel characters continue to split opinions.

Live-action Silk and Spider-Man Noir TV shows are thought to be in the works, while movies like Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter, and Venom 3 are all on the horizon.

Today, a new rumour (first shared on Toonado.com) suggests Sony Pictures Animation is plotting a new Spider-Man movie which will boast an R-Rating. It's a peculiar move on the studio's part, particularly as it would be an animated adventure and not even Venom was granted an R; still, Sony is nothing if not inconsistent!

Both The Streamr and scooper @CanWeGetToast shared the rumour and we'd recommend taking it with a pinch of salt for now.

Neither mention who would lead the movie, though we can tell you that the hints you might have seen on social media about it being Spider-Punk do line up with what we've heard. The character arguably suits an R-Rating and Daniel Kaluuya would presumably be enlisted to reprise the role. It's also possible this will be a totally different version of the British web-slinger.

Spider-Punk, whose real name is Hobie Brown, first appeared in Edge of Spider-Verse #5 in 2014. In his universe, he's a rebellious punk rocker who gains spider-powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Embodying the spirit of counterculture and rebellion, Spider-Punk sports a distinctive punk rock aesthetic, complete with a mohawk, piercings, and a denim vest adorned with spider symbols.

Known for his anti-establishment attitude, Spider-Punk fights against oppressive forces and injustice. In Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, he started as something of a love rival to Miles Morales but ultimately proved himself an ally to the teenage wall-crawler.

"I was gassed," Kaluuya said of playing the hero last year. "I turned to Lord, Miller and Kemp and said, 'Thank you for letting me be a part of it, because this is cool as [frick].' I’m a voice in Spider-Verse with a wicked character that sounds exactly like me, from where I’m from. Come on! You go to the younger people in your family and flex: 'I’m getting on, but don’t forget!'"

"I’m Camden born and bred, and this character is from Camden which is very much associated with the punk movement, so I think they wanted to lean into what they have for free with me," he added. "They were like, ‘What do they speak like?’ and I said, ‘Like me!’ I think it gives it that authenticity, like me saying, ‘Man like Pav! Big steppa!’ I felt really respected."

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

lazlodaytona - 1/22/2024, 2:17 AM
@AnthonyVonGeek - wouldn't that be NC-17?

Sony: "He was a well received character...... let make an entire movie about him."

na, dont.

@DemonTweeks - Why not? It's a cool character with a big comic book history. It's not like they are thinking on a Big Wheel animated movie. It's a cool Spider-Man variant. But hating Sony for the sake of it is a popular thing.

I think a good idea for a R-rated Spider-Man project would be a Kaine Parker/Scarlet Spider movie based on the Christopher Yost tenure on that comic.

How about a rated R Kravens Last Hunt movie? Oh.. we’re still doing the multiverse thing huh

@Matchesz - but kraven will be rated r

Urubrodi - 1/22/2024, 5:18 AM
@Matchesz - You don't need R rating to tell a dark story.
lazlodaytona

@Matchesz - I agree. It's funny, when I first read the headline I thought, "Awesome! A live action, neo noir Spiderman film that is R-rated!"
Then I realize they meant animated and I could only muster an "eh."

NC-17 would be punk.

Bob Iger must be busy AF to not buy this back as fast as is humanly possible.

Does he not realize how much damage Sony is actively doing to this sinking Marvel ship? Fix the leak. Seal it shut. Stop Sony ASAP. Pull a Batgirl on all SPUMC movies. Fix this Bob Iger. There's another full year of bad Marvel movies happening right now. Marvel may not survive this. It barely survived 2023.

@ObserverIO - NC-17 would be that Spidey-on-Spidey action that's in a comment up above.

@lazlodaytona - lol, that would make a billion dollars. Do it Sony!

Sony has shown that they can do incredible things with Spider-Man in animated form. Considering the sort of stories Spider-Punk is associated to an R rating could work. Like can someone say why this would be so bad? Really not getting the hate with this one. Crazy people.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 1/22/2024, 6:17 AM
@Urubrodi - Have Raimi direct it!
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/22/2024, 6:40 AM
@Urubrodi - It sounds genuinely awesome. Especially if it were a hard R (You're not being punk unless you're pushing against the rating).

Still. Sony must be dealt with. I won't be supporting it.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/22/2024, 6:59 AM
@ObserverIO - They can't be trusted in live-action, agreed, but this is meant to be an animated movie. They are the ones who delivered on both Spider-Verse films. I feel like it's a different scenario.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/22/2024, 11:21 AM
@Urubrodi - If it's Lord and Miller then I'm in. Of course. But I feel like if Marvel were to regain the rights, they would probably keep the Spider-verse side of things going, because they've proven themselves in terms of both quality and success.

Like Deadpool.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 1/22/2024, 1:02 PM
@ObserverIO - I'd hope so, but so far Marvel hasn't done that much on the animation front apart from What If?, which doesn't even come close to Spider-Verse. There are these rumors that they will finally start making actual animated movies. The part I will never get is why not team up with Disney or Pixar and get a quality animated movie out. Big Hero 6 is completely unrelated to MCU but at least showed that it could be done.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/22/2024, 1:07 PM
@Urubrodi - That's a damn good take.

What If..? animation has thus far been.... well shit, tbh. But they have Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar in-house. Why not use them? I like that take right there.

"No Patrick. Making a movie rated R doesn't automatically make it better..."
