Kill the Theory: Why Spider-Man Doesn't Belong in the MCU or The Avengers

It's okay to dream, but don't let things get too out of hand. There's no practical place for Spider-Man in the MCU, so let him find the truth about his parents without any more distractions.

It's pretty common knowledge the fact that, currently, Spider-Man does not belong to Marvel Studios. He's at home with Sony Pictures, which keeps his involvement with the likes of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk, and SHIELD off the table. He's a stand-alone hero in his own, stand-alone universe, standing alone next to Gwen Stacy. And he's better that way.

But there are lots of cries for Spider-Man to blast through contractual agreement and join ranks with the super team of the Avengers for their future endeavors. With rumors that OSCORP was supposed to make a cameo in The Avengers film, fan speculation and theory ran wild about how the two universes could intersect, despite the fact that the character would provide for quite the distraction within further Avengers installments.

Allow me to explain. With the reveal of Thanos as a big bad villain, possibly being saved for either Avengers 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers is obviously going to start heading in a galactic direction. Thor 2 is jumping into some more magical elements than the first film decided to cover, Iron Man 3 is going to take the next step with nano-technology, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is also taking a more modern, "political-thriller" take. While that last one may not seem in line with the others, you have to remember SHIELD's involvement and how they're also heavily involved in the idea of cosmic intervention. And then, of course, GotG couldn't be more galactic if it came bundled in Star Trek wrapping paper. And we can't forget Ant-Man, another Marvel film heavily rumored to have some interaction with how SHIELD plays with the gods of the cosmos.

What's The Amazing Spider-Man hoping to cover? Well, it's got the pressing issue of solving the relationship between Peter's parents and OSCORP and a possible love triangle between Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane. Spider-Man's just not fitting into the big picture, here, folks. What the movie is trying to do is fine for its own universe, because unlike the pictures at Marvel Studios, it doesn't have to come across in layers that are going to be relayed or expounded in other "off-brand" films.

And, honestly, would Spider-Man really be a big help to The Avengers? Practically, no. He's no militant strategist or power-house, and while Parker's smart, he'd be eaten alive if thrown into a room with the likes of Stark, Banner, and Hank Pym. Really, the only dynamic he'd be bringing to the table is one of age. His witticism is already captured through the likes of Iron Man, and his genuine, nerdish, and nice-guy personality can be found in Captain America. Spidey works well on the team in the comics, but in the comics, The Avengers boasts an enormous roster, with a surplus of various heroes. And unlike the rest of the MCU heroes, Parker hasn't exactly come to a full arc (yet) in his movie. He's still incredibly inexperienced.

Let's be honest, here. With Ant Man joining up and rumors abounding that Ms. Marvel might be a possible entry, and characters like Falcon being introduced into the MCU, do we really have room for Spider-Man? He's got his own set of films, whether or not he's joining the Avengers. Wouldn't you like to see some new folks? I know I do. "But what about a cameo?" To that question, I beg, "Is Spider-Man really a character worth splitting down to a cameo in a movie about superheroes?" It's a moment I think we fanboys are playing in our heads a bit too spectacularly. Even if Parker's cameo was one that would save the day for the team, realistically how contrived, unsatisfying, and unwholesome would it come off? The answer: very.

As of right now, Spider-Man does have a place on the Avengers roster or in that universe. It's okay to dream, but don't let things get too out of hand. These are two separate entities, and they'll work better that way.

Cap's leadership qualities makes him the heart and soul of Marvel's flagship superteam,The Avengers. The same way people respect Superman in DC, Cap receives comparable recognition in Marvel, and he's not even superhumanly powered. Spider-Man can't hold a torch to Cap's respect IMO.

well it also depends on the niverse, say there is a peter Parker in the MCU he jsut ins;t Spider-man yet and ias in the background could he apper in soem shape or form down the line? sure, and in the comcis he's on two teams, yeah its too early and i really don;t want TASM spidey in MCU. i tihnk it could work, and i am SAYING COULD. okay anyone here have seen wreck it ralph? it's a wondrful movie, and Lots of amazing video game charaters form Link, Princess peach and daisy, digdug, quebert, sonic, ken, ryau, sataine, M. Bison, etc are in the film. heck sonic's promoted alot more and you'd think he would be a distraction, but he's not. he's jsut the sprinkles or cherry on top of the ice cream cake of the film. What i'm getting at if my wreck it ralph metaphore makes sence is, Spider-man would be background and maybe could have a few lines someday, if it effects the over-acrhing stories of the MCU. hell in a different universe it could work well. you never know really. great article as always.

I also don't want Spider-Man in the Avengers as I think they sho concentrate on "lesser" known characters such as Ant man, Falcon etc. Why does every CBM have to have crossovers. You wouldn't have Blade involved in an non vampire-monsters storyline just for the sake of it or DD involved with thanos. It's has to be about the strength of story that's why everyone is apprehensive about a JL movie.

this is getting interesting as I just compared comic book /CBM fans on a different article of how they are exactly like twilhards, justin Bieber fan girls, and Zombies. I get why a lot of people arn't happy like happy11 is, and I liek the lesser known heroes getting their spot in the sun. you can tell Marvel has really put a lot of time and effort into this universe and alot of care. Spidey would be interesting to see but not so early in the universe itself. later on it can if it it can fit.

I absolutely agree with you here! Spider-Man has always been best on his own, in my opinion-- from the beginning, his stories have been small, personal ones, and the majority of the conflict in his superhero life came from butting heads with authority figures and getting reamed in the public eye by the Daily Bugle on a regular basis. The whole point of Spider-Man is that we're supposed to RELATE to him, after all; he's the everyman, the guy who has to work for a living and struggles to make ends meet. Being an Avenger pretty much puts a stop to ALL of that.

And while it's fun to see how he interacts with the members of the Avengers from time to time in the comic books, his story isn't really informed as much by being an Avenger as Captain America's or Iron Man's is. Avenging is like something Spider-Man does on the weekends-- the rest of the time, he's trying to have a life as Peter Parker, or stopping whatever street-level crime his teammates don't have time to take care of. He doesn't do the global-scale stuff on his own time; that kind of crap is way out of his league.

(That's actually why I hated the "Ends of the Earth" storyline in Amazing Spider-Man-- it took Spidey and placed him in a big, global, James Bond-style storyline that the character had no business being in.)

So yeah, I'm happy that Spider-Man is off in his own, self-contained movie universe, and I hope they don't try to take him out of it anytime soon. Rampant crossovers are what's killing Marvel's comic books right now; I'd hate to see the same fate befall their movie properties...

I agree, characters like spidey and daredevil should NOT be on the avengers in the comics and the movies for 2 reasons, 1)they don't bring anything to the team and 2)they are both loners, daredevil more so than spidey. The only team spider-man really worked on is when he joined the fantastic four because he's got history with them especially johnny storm. The only crossover I would like to see for spidey is one with daredevil or the FF, and even then not in this series of films

Right, because everyone knows Spidey for his leadership qualities......

In Avengers, Cap knew who to put where in the city while fighting the aliens. He knew the strengths and weaknesses of his team and put them each on jobs that they would handle the best. So yes, they did show his leadership skills. He wasnt just randomly sending characters places with no rhyme or reason. That is called strategy, and no, not everyone is capable of that.

Anyway, i've never considered Spidey to be an Avenger. Even though he's been one for a while now, he's just never felt right on the team. Same goes for Wolverine.

And someone said it best earlier, Marvel owns the rights to DD. He could easily fill any part of a story that Spidey could. Like if they made a Civil War story, DD could easily replace the role of Spidey as the character that reveals his identity to the world. Aside from their powers, DD and Spidey are actually very similar characters. The thing is, DD actually feels like he has belonged on the Avengers all this time.

@CorndogBurgler I don;t think its possible to have Jollenm to agree with you on anyhting. Jol's jsut in his/her own little world wher eevery X-men FIlm is PERFECT and TASM is the best movie EVERS!

\I do agree with ahvign DD on the Avengers as a replacement for SPider-man. could be worth it,but i want to see Ms.Marvel/Captin Marvel :)

The only disagreement I have with this is, spidermans never say die attitude, he has on countless times beaten people he shouldnt have even gone up against, example firelord herald of galactus, even the cover on the issue says it its got spiderman on top of him beating him senseless and captain america and the avengers running up saying spiderman you cant beat fire lord and his answer is oh yeah watch me.

Ya Spidey shouldn't be in the MCU he is better on his own. The magic of Spidey is he is always outmatched but he always finds a way to win. Putting him on a team full of other really powerful Heores he would seem like a sidekick and that magic would be gone.

For sure Spidey can give orders just like Cap. The difference is Cap is a natural leader whereas Peter is not. So while anybody could have give out the orders, doesn't mean people would listen - but they do when Cap gives them.

Saying that Spider-Man will be no big help to the Avengers is ridiculous. He is a fantastic fighter, whose fighting style and powers lend themselves to fighting tons of enemies at the same time. And the only reason he cannot do more with his scientific abilities is because he doesn't have the resources. He made the web-shooters with a [frick]ing wristwatch for [frick]'s sake. Imagine what he can do with the resources of SHIELD. Furthermore, adding his brilliant+SHIELD's resources, and he'll probably add more things to his fighting arsenal, making him even better at taking out opponents.

Sorry man, I love your work. But I cannot agree with that statement. It seems like you're just shitting on Spider-Man because you're annoyed at the rumor.

But yeah, Spidey ain't crossing over until Marvel buys him back, which isn't ever going to happen considering what a cash cow he is for Sony.

@Avengersa12 Okay explian to Us fans why and HOW Spider-man BELONGS to the MCU. Re-reading all the post here everyone seems o have made a few valid points of why he shouldn't be in it. while it will be fun. i REALLY DO LOVE THE IDEA OF ALOT OF CHARACTERS WHO DON'T GET THE SPOTLIGHT ARE GETTING THER MOMENT IN THE SUN AND THOSE FANS ARE FEELING MORE FANBOY LOVE THEN EVER BEFORE. IT HINK IF IT WHERE A DIFFERENT VERSION OF SPIDER-MAN it could NOT SAYING IT WQWOULD OR SHOULD BUT COULD WORK. nOT AT THIS TIME KINDA LIKE dAREdEVIL, i WANT HIM TO SHOW UP MAYBE IN PHASE 5 OR pHASES 6.SPIDER-MAN PHASE 32 OR WHATEVER JUST PRETTY LONG LIE DOW THE ROAD. WHEN E GET TO THE FUTURE WE WILL GET THERE, BUT PLEASE EXPLIAN TO ME AND EVERYONE WHAT WOULD THE mcu BENIFET FOR HAING SPIDER-MAN? wHAT AND HOW CAN ANY STORIES IN A SHARARED/ SINGLE UNIVERSE YOU CAN DO THAT YOU CAN'T DO IN ANOTHER SEOIES?

@avengers no he doesn't, marvel studios is just a movie studio nothing more its just the company that found him but Sony still works close with marvel studios in making these films. Besides not everything marvel studios makes is good, trust me they've made some pretty lackluster films. As did every other studio, spiderman deserves a lot of attention if he joins the MCU a lot that attention will be diverted becasue of focus on other heroes thus losing the magic. And oh yea I don't want to see a live action version of the shitty ultimate spiderman cartoon.

i hope spidey's not standalone for too long. i think we all deserve some Black Cat by now.

Marvel and especially Spidey comics have always been about crossovers. Marvel Team-Up anyone? But otherwise...

Avengers created: 1962.

Didn't need Webs or Claws until 2005. Didn't need them then either.

@BattlinMurdock

Sure he used their technology. But that happens all the time in the field of engineering. He used existing resources to create his own product. Not to mention solving the puzzle Connors had been working on for decades.

And about him being no Bruce Banner. Need I remind you that the kid is still in high-school? He will gain experience and knowledge with time. He has that raw ingredient of intelligent and a disposition for it. And again, he doesn't have the resources for the things Stark and Banner did. Banner's medical knowledge comes from his education, which didn't come from "in shacks in Calcutta". And Stark was provided the resources to make it work by the terrorists. It was brilliant work, but he didn't exactly build the suit out of sticks and stones.

Unexperienced? Yes. Lacks resources? Absolutely. Not good enough to provide help to Avengers? No.

^By the way, I'm not arguing that Spidey should or would be in MCU. He shouldn't, the Spidey franchise works better solo and MCU has enough characters to deal out screentime to. And of course, he wouldn't because Sony won't hand him over.

All I am arguing is the suggestion that Spidey isn't good enough to be in Avengers. Which he absolutely is.

I definitely agree with this article, Spidey would be really cool to see, but I think Daredevil, Spider-Man and Wolverine should remain absent from the movies cuz they are mostly loners anyway and they would totally steal the show from other equally awesome but lesser known heroes like Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel or Black Panther, early on I thought it would be a good idea but now i realize these characters would only become screen-hogs (DD to a lesser degree than Wolverind and Spidey)

I agree that spidey should have his own franchise of films, but a little nod in the films wouldnt hurt either.

I have heard alot of rumors and speculation about where avengers 2 is going on this site, from the masters of evil to the Mad Titan Thanos, but there is one theory I would like to put forth that I think would be epic to see onscreen.

Two Words

SECRET WAR

and not nick furys the original secret war, the beyonder an almost godlike being brings together all these heroes and villains for one big face off for nothing other than his own amusement, and I think that would be the route to take to get around the other studios owning characters.

I just picture the hulk holding a mountain on his shoulders while the other avengers scramble to provide iron man with enough power to blow a hole through the mountain to save everyone and think that would be awesome to see on screen, but spiderman was in that arc reason for posting it here.
