MORBIUS: Jared Leto Superhero Film Delayed To April In The Wake Of Recent Omicron Surge

Well, it looks like Spider-Man: No Way Home is going to continue being the only CBM we get for a while as Sony has decided to move Jared Leto's Morbius from its January date to early April.

Despite Spider-Man: No Way Home dominating the global box office, it seems as though Sony is considerably less confident in January's box office potential as Omicron continues to run rampant across the globe, as the studio has officially announced this evening that their next Marvel film, Morbius, has been delayed from January 28 to April 1, 2022.

The Daniel Espinosa-directed superhero creature feature will still be the first Marvel release of the year, but its delay couldn't come at a worse time as interest in the film has recently reached an all-time high, due in no small part to the spectacular exploits of No Way Home

For the time being, Sony has only moved Morbius, leaving the Tom Holland/Mark Wahlberg-starring Uncharted on February 18, so the one delay may be their only big move during the early part of this year as studios attempt to re-navigate the latest COVID-19 variant. Meanwhile, Paramount's Scream is still slated to open exclusively in theaters on January 14.

Morbius now leaves a relatively uncrowded January and moves to a busy April, where it'll open a week ahead of Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Universal's Ambulance and two weeks before Warner Bros.' Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

On the bright side, the film did recently complete a round of additional photography, which reportedly added more scenes with Michael Keaton's Vulture, so it's not exactly out of the realm of possibility that they could use the extra time to try and add a few more surprises before it hits theaters.

The upcoming Spider-Man spinoff stars Academy Award-winner Jared Leto (Blade Runner 2049Suicide Squad) in the title role, with a supporting cast consisting of Matt Smith (Terminator: GenisysDoctor Who), Adria Arjona (6 Underground; Triple Frontier), 2x Primetime Emmy-nominee Jared Harris (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.Chernobyl), Al Madrigal (I'm Dying Up HereAbout a Boy), Tyrese Gibson (F9Transformers), and Michael Keaton (Spider-Man: HomecomingBatman) as the Vulture.

Morbius is now slated to open in theaters on April 1, 2022.

One of the most compelling and conflicted characters in Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. While at first, it seems to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed. Will good override evil – or will Morbius succumb to his mysterious new urges?

Lmfao nawwwww.

Sony isn’t looking at the first billion dollar movie in 2 years THAT THEY PRODUCED and saying now isn’t the time to release a movie 😂😂😂

@DannRamm113 - as in, they don’t want a low grossing movie to cut the legs off a behemoth? Like better for another behemoth to do it? That makes sense. Well now there’s like nothing but scream 5 (might as well call it matrix 5 for all it’s gonna do to Spidey) and some other random craps

@DannRamm113 - wouldn't it be better for them to release it now though, right on the heels of NWH?

Probably for the best. Give it some breathing room between No Way Home and it.

Interested in seeing how this film turns out, I've heard through the grapevine that its "crazy."

@HeavyMetal4Life - crazy in what way? I'm really interested in seeing how the multiverse angle plays out so i'm a litte mad it got delayed by that much but health comes first and Winter is the most contagious time of the year for the virus, so it's an understandable reason

Delaying because of Omicron doesn’t really make sense. Not that it isn’t serious it is but all they care about is financials I highly doubt Sony cares about our wellbeing and they just proved they CAN put out a movie if it’s good an people will go. I think they are just moving it to help give NWH breathing room to have a longer tail

@Cbmfilmjunkie - Sadly...is not imposible.
Warner might be shitting its pants after seeing those 2021 numbers (every single thing they released, bombed), they wont start 2022 with another flop.

Sony just saw the Matrix 4 numbers and said "yeah, we'll wait".
April also makes sense because they wont take audiences away from Uncharted, and wont have to compete with The Batman.
Let's just hope things are a bit better by april...
tmp3
tmp3 - 1/3/2022, 7:43 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Yeah but now it has to compete with Sonic, Fantastic Beasts, The Northman and Dr Strange 2 lol
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/3/2022, 7:45 PM
@tmp3 - Doesnt Dr Strange 2 come out in may?
But yeah, Sonic 2 might be a problem.

Btw, just read The Marvels was moved to february 2023, is this new?
tmp3
tmp3 - 1/3/2022, 7:46 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Yeah, but the gap between strange and morbius is smaller than the gap it had with Batman on its old date
PantherKing
PantherKing - 1/3/2022, 7:48 PM
@TheHumanSpider2 - Matrix 4 was effectively killed by WB with their day and date HBO max release and also releasing on the 2nd weekend of no way home. Not to mention the bead reviews
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 1/3/2022, 7:53 PM
@tmp3 - Even if things are better by april, we are till in the middle of the pandemic, movies are making 90% of their total BO on their first weekend.

@PantherKing - NWH was the exception, not the rule.
Matrix 4 is the rule!

@tmp3

I have a feeling this isn’t due to Omicron. Spider-Man has been absolutely thriving in this environment.

Michael Keaton was shooting reshoots for Morbius recently…could be a bit of a mess.

Matrix 4 is also a day and date release. That movie always had a ceiling on how well it was going to do.

Didnt you argue with me and say day and date has little impact on the boxoffice🤔?
tmp3
tmp3 - 1/3/2022, 8:46 PM
@regularmovieguy - Yeah Deadline just came out and said it’s not due to Omicron, it’s to give spidey maximum screens. I just hope Northman can survive what’s turning into a packed April
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 1/3/2022, 9:02 PM
@AmazingFILMporg

Absolutely not. I’m just saying it wasn’t a horrible move as many have claimed it to be.

They absolutely sacrificed the short term box office for brand recognition and subscribers, but I never said it had little impact on box office.

Also this movie gets so much more confusing as time goes on. It was originally going to come out before No Way Home but now isn’t. It seemingly references the end of Far From Home, and has a character from Homecoming but also references Venom several times which is confirmed to not take place in that universe and is now confirmed to not be currently in the MCU. It’s such a cluster[frick] and now I’m honestly more interested in this movie just to see wtf is going on with this continuity or lack there of. It’s reaching Fox-men levels from what we can see
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 1/3/2022, 8:30 PM
@Ha1frican - true. Which sucks. Sony is dragging the MCU down… well in that sense. These are things I won’t tell my normal friends haha
