With negative reviews and a so-so opening weekend, it's hard to say whether Sony Pictures would consider making a Morbius sequel. While the response from moviegoers has been a little kinder than the critics' consensus, convincing people to continue to follow the Living Vampire's story will still be a hard sell for the studio, and it seems more likely Jared Leto will be a co-star in future projects.
Understandably, Morbius does set the stage for a sequel, primarily in regards to Dr. Martine Bancroft's future. After being attacked by Milo, she allows Michael to drain her of blood, powering him up for a final battle with his former friend. However, as the triumphant Morbius later flies away, the camera pans to the rooftop where he left Martine, and we see her now vampire-like eyes open!
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Adria Arjona shared her thoughts on this big tease and revealed how soon she learned this take on Martine would follow her comic book counterpart.
"I mean, I read the comics, so I imagined there would be something. They wouldn’t send me the script at the beginning, but I did my research. I was like, 'Oh, she turns. Martine Bancroft turns,'" Arjona recalled. "And I just remember calling my agent to be like, 'Oh my god, I think she might turn in this one or in the second one,' which is even more exciting. And then I got the script, and when I got to that moment, I was so excited because it changes everything for her."
"It adds a bunch of question marks to her future, so I’m excited to see where Martine will go," the actress said of her potential future in Sony's Marvel Universe. "Now that she has turned, I want to know if she goes more towards good or bad. Or does she have trouble finding the middle ground? What happens to her? I’m just curious. I’m as curious as the fans will be."
In the comic books, Martine does head down a villainous route, though she's a traditional bloodsucker rather than a "living vampire". It's hard to say how her story could play out in a project like Sinister Six, so there's a chance Martine will be sidelined if Morbius does become a supporting character of sorts.
