Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Why He Didn't Read SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Script; Addresses MCU Future

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he decided not to read the entire Spider-Man: No Way Home screenplay, while also addressing his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Sorcerer Supreme...

Benedict Cumberbatch made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2016's Doctor Strange, later taking on a leading role in Avengers: Infinity War. He'd also appear in Avengers: Endgame, of course, and will return in Spider-Man: No Way Home before once again taking centre stage in next year's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

USA Today recently caught up with the British actor to discuss his new Netflix movie The Power of the Dog, and asked whether he has a future in the role beyond the Doctor Strange sequel. "As long as the character is interesting and challenging and doing fantastic things in the MCU, why not?" he responded.

This does appear to be a role Cumberbatch has a lot of fun with, even making time to lend his voice to the Doctor Strange Supreme Variant of the character in animated series, What If...?

Going back to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor wouldn't divulge any spoilers, mostly because he decided against reading the entire screenplay so he could enjoy the threequel as a moviegoer. "You know it's a dead end [to ask for spoilers], but I can tell you this: It's a riotous film. I don't want to give anything away – and I haven't actually read the whole script! I did that on purpose because I just want the ride."

We're betting on the Sorcerer Supreme having a bright future in the MCU, especially as he's become such a focal point of many big stories in this shared world since first appearing five years ago. Time will tell on that front, of course, and he'll need to survive his clash with the Scarlet Witch first.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released on May 6, 2022.

Oh Mr. Cumberbatch, you are an MCU fan too!

"...even making time to lend his voice..."

You do realize he gets paid, a lot, for doing things like this, because it's his job. Why write it as if he's stopping by your nephew's birthday party to entertain the kids on his way to a gig?

I believe he said he did the same for Endgame only reading the scenes he was in.

I sure hope he sticks around! Imagine the MCU version of the Illuminati or a Midnight Sons movie!

Dr Strange really got to shine in IW and EG, even if he was only in Endgame a tiny bit, he was pivotal, and now he’s in two more back to back movies. One with Spidey, one with Raimi. Ol Ted Raimi really knows his stuff

@TheWalkingCuban - Ted Raimi ?

Speaking of which, if we get a variant of Hoffman played by Ted, I'll lose my sh*t.

Did we ever find out who the 6th member of the Sinister 6 is?

@WruceBayne - Nope.

Most common/best guesses are Venom, Harry Osborn, Ned, The Vulture, and the Joker.

@LSHF - I think it’s Venom. Topher Grace Venom as a matter of fact.
Wild Theory: Topher Grace gets separated from his symbiote and in the after credits scene Tom Hardy comes across it. The TG symbiote bonds with TH’s symbiote and corrupts him and turns him from anti hero to full on villain with the white spider symbol.

@LcfSat - he still can be an option but it just seems like they’re pulling villains from the other two Spider-Men movies.

What Benedict Cumberbatch REALLY meant was as long as Disney keeps backing the money truck up to his mansion he'll keep playing the Sorcerer Supreme. Also by playing Dr Strange for big money he can afford to do small Independent films

The MCU NEEDS him to stay. With the influx of new heroes and villains. They need an OG hero like Dr Strange as an anchor to the beginning

How can you hate this guy lol.

It's crazy that he lost his sister a year ago (he made a special thank you video for nurses and doctors) but he never mentioned this but I was a bit taken back by how emotional he was there and realizing now what really happened...so sad. He never even insinuated it back then. Crazy to think he did the Power of the Dog (what a movie and performance btw) during those difficult moments.

He's one of the best actors working today but unlike a lot of them actually doesn't look down on a genre or role because it doesn't conform to the hollywood elite and isn't ashamed of admitting of loving the Marvel type of movies. One moment he does a silly animated kids film the next he does the Marvel stuff and then you see him give the best performance of the year in one of the best films of the year in Power of the Dog. Disney/Marvel should really appreciate him because a top actor today that loves the Marvel ride ? I mean really loves it. Not many of them out there. I love diverse actors that show me they can master any genre and any role and don't only limit themselves to a specific genre, those actors aren't high on my all time list. I always see him keep his Marvel secrets close to his chest but he's also very friendly and playful in his Marvel interviews never looks down or is tired of the same Marvel questions and his Dr Strange is GOAT levels of badass and this combined with his acting skills pfff lightning in a bottle. You can tell he's the alpha dog today with that character. Just hope they do the character justice. That What If episode where he was Strange Supreme is levels of badass I wanna see on the big screen...that type of badass magic.

Either way so glad he is part of the MCU.

It is crazy how Benedict Cumberbatch is in the MCU in one of the most important roles, has 4 (soon to be 6) appearances under his belt and yet still feels like we haven't seen nearly enough of him
