Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Why He Didn't Read SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Script; Addresses MCU Future

Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he decided not to read the entire Spider-Man: No Way Home screenplay, while also addressing his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Sorcerer Supreme...

Benedict Cumberbatch made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2016's Doctor Strange, later taking on a leading role in Avengers: Infinity War. He'd also appear in Avengers: Endgame, of course, and will return in Spider-Man: No Way Home before once again taking centre stage in next year's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

USA Today recently caught up with the British actor to discuss his new Netflix movie The Power of the Dog, and asked whether he has a future in the role beyond the Doctor Strange sequel. "As long as the character is interesting and challenging and doing fantastic things in the MCU, why not?" he responded.

This does appear to be a role Cumberbatch has a lot of fun with, even making time to lend his voice to the Doctor Strange Supreme Variant of the character in animated series, What If...?

Going back to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor wouldn't divulge any spoilers, mostly because he decided against reading the entire screenplay so he could enjoy the threequel as a moviegoer. "You know it's a dead end [to ask for spoilers], but I can tell you this: It's a riotous film. I don't want to give anything away – and I haven't actually read the whole script! I did that on purpose because I just want the ride."

We're betting on the Sorcerer Supreme having a bright future in the MCU, especially as he's become such a focal point of many big stories in this shared world since first appearing five years ago. Time will tell on that front, of course, and he'll need to survive his clash with the Scarlet Witch first.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released on May 6, 2022.
