When it was confirmed that The Lizard (Rhys Ifans) would be returning for Spider-Man: No Way Home, many fans hoped to see a more comic-accurate take on the reptilian villain. Unfortunately, the character looked pretty much the same as he did when we first saw him in The Amazing Spider-Man.
However, if some newly revealed concept art is any indication, there were originally plans in place to change-up The Lizard's design and give him a more monstrous appearance.
Marvel Studios' visual development supervisor Ian Joyner took to Instagram to share his early designs for the character, and this version of Curt Connors would have had the long white lab-coat, the purple pants, and an elongated snout that made him look a lot more like his comic book counterpart.
"Early round of exploration for #thelizard for #spidermannowayhome was to see him in his lab coat (and purple pants!," Joyner captioned his post. "Plus showing that he has grown more beastly and developed some mass and a snout. Really fun to think about how he may look as the Lizard took more hold of him but wouldn’t work for the story."
Of course, Joyner is referring to the fact that, along with the other Multiversal villains, Lizard was plucked from the reality we knew from the TASM movies, so it only made sense that he'd look the same. Still, we can't imagine there'd be too many complaints if they went with the design above without providing an explanation!
Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released on Digital on March 22, before coming to DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on April 12.
