SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Concept Art Reveals A Very Different Look For The Lizard

The Lizard looked pretty much identical to the previous TASM version of the character when he returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but some new concept art reveals a very different design...

When it was confirmed that The Lizard (Rhys Ifans) would be returning for Spider-Man: No Way Home, many fans hoped to see a more comic-accurate take on the reptilian villain. Unfortunately, the character looked pretty much the same as he did when we first saw him in The Amazing Spider-Man.

However, if some newly revealed concept art is any indication, there were originally plans in place to change-up The Lizard's design and give him a more monstrous appearance.

Marvel Studios' visual development supervisor Ian Joyner took to Instagram to share his early designs for the character, and this version of Curt Connors would have had the long white lab-coat, the purple pants, and an elongated snout that made him look a lot more like his comic book counterpart.

"Early round of exploration for #thelizard for #spidermannowayhome was to see him in his lab coat (and purple pants!," Joyner captioned his post. "Plus showing that he has grown more beastly and developed some mass and a snout. Really fun to think about how he may look as the Lizard took more hold of him but wouldn’t work for the story."

Of course, Joyner is referring to the fact that, along with the other Multiversal villains, Lizard was plucked from the reality we knew from the TASM movies, so it only made sense that he'd look the same. Still, we can't imagine there'd be too many complaints if they went with the design above without providing an explanation!

Spider-Man: No Way Home will be released on Digital on March 22, before coming to DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD on April 12.

So much better!

But I understand they went for the amazing variant so... Who knows, maybe we can see this one in the future.

@Fogs - Agreed. I know the characters origins, but I'm still baffled that we ultimately got what we did when this was available.

I honestly dunno why they didn't go for this far superior design. I had thought maybe it was to save audience confusion, but he's still a big green lizard. Hard to cause confusion

Pretty cool. Could have at least included the lab coat in the movie

@MrKeyzerSoze - doesn’t mean anything hulk in comics always have purple pants in movie he never does no one complained about it, same with black panther having cape in his first appearance of comics

That is absolutely beautiful. The long snout, the lab coat, the purple pants, it's perfect!

Yeah it looks nice. But not signficantly better than the movie version in my opinion. The lab coat would've been nice to have though.

@Fares - Wow. I disagree completely. This design is so significantly better that it would have single handedly improved my personal score of TASM from like a 6.5/10 to a 8/10.

@JermareCBM - See this is what I love about discourse in art. The subjectivity of it. You give the Lizard's design so much weight that it would significantly improve the film for you, whereas, for me it doesn't make the film (which I already quite like) any better.

Is it that hard to add a snout and a lab coat hmmm?! So close to perfection. That clown said it wouldn't work for the story. Max was completely different, why tf wouldn't you do the same for Lizard? Oh because it's old renders and old scenes with Rhys

If Sandman's condition can get worse off-screen between the movies and Electro's new look be just handwaved, there's no reason why the Lizard couldn't have gone through new mutations or something.

Well they can use this design if they ever introduce their own version of the character. Unless they are going to say ‘oh all Peters best Rogues? Yeah non of them exist on this world’

I dont know why they couldn’t have had him continue to mutate throughout the movie, pretty much everyone else changed their look over time he should have too.

THIS is what the MCU lizard should look like, perfect. What i dont understand is if they changed electros look... why couldnt they do the same for lizard?

Amyways, the one spidey villain i'm dying to see is scorpion... can we please please make that happen
OmegaBlack13
OmegaBlack13 - 3/11/2022, 12:46 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - I figured it was because Electro initially entered the universe as a being off pure energy, and had to completely reconstitute himself, while Lizard and everyone else were just brought over in their original bodies.

so now the 3 Spiderman cured the villains from past movies, what does that mean for our current Spiderman, does that mean they will not appear ?

my thinking is it would be a bit redundant since Peter will know how to cure them if he came across them.

Concept art looks so much better than original. I wonder how these people decide on which designs and outfits to use.

@Lokiwasright - seriously dude, it’s baffling how someone somewhere saw this & wasn’t like “this is what we need” not like it would be hard to explain as he was evolving last time we saw him anyway. These things always irk me when they were almost on point but for whatever reason dropped the ball
SheepishOne

"Wouldn't work for the story"

Lizard did nothing in this. Just have him run off in the middle to perfect his formula in this new universe. Give one or two minutes of time to a cutaway of Lizard stealing chemicals and then dosing himself in the sewer. Have him show up to the final battle like this, and the story isn't worse off.

Exactly. That’s what electro does.

I can’t get my head around why they never had him in the lab coat . I think it’s a must have for this character makes him pop. Who knows what they was thinking. Don’t like any of the designs of the Spider-Man baddies from the newest film

In many ways NWH had too many characters, meaning that some would automatically end up getting the short end of the stick. In this case Sandman and especially Lizard. I know covid also had something to do with it as the two actors probably wasn't even on set or at least not very much.
I think the movie might have benefitted from being slightly longer (like The Batman) so each of the two villains could have been fleshed out a little more.
We could have had a scene where Doc Strange caught the Lizard in the sewers being up to his old tricks. An accidentally drop of a vial with serum could have caused him to mutate further (into what these concept arts show). That way Lizard wouldn't feel as much like a footnote but a more equal to the other villains and more closely resemble his comic book counterpart.
