During post-production on Spider-Man: Far From Home, Disney/Marvel Studios' and Sony Pictures' working relationship came to an end. We'd find out about it months later, but with everyone from the Russo Brothers to a countless number of fans on social media making their disappointment known, the studios figured something out and will continue to share the web-slinger...for now.
It's obvious we'll see Tom Holland's Peter Parker swing into Sony's Spider-Man Universe before long, but the hope is he'll also remain in the MCU beyond Spider-Man: No Way Home.
According to Screen Rant (who have shared some quotes from Empire Magazine), Holland met with producer Amy Pascal after the split to discuss ideas for where Spider-Man could go next. The actor reveals that he suggested a Kraven the Hunter film and even wondered whether we could just see the hero fall through a "portal" and end up in the same world as Venom.
He also admits that he wasn't ready to say goodbye to the MCU, and expressed relief that the two parties were able to come to a new agreement (which we know Holland was a crucial part of making happen following a conversation with former Disney CEO Bob Iger).
Sony would have had to find a way to explain Spidey's jump from one world to the next, and we're guessing Madame Web might have facilitated that somehow. We may never know, but it doesn't sound as if this pitch got past the idea stage before the iconic superhero was allowed to remain in the MCU.
