Screenwriters Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman On Villains Approach For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Star Trek Into Darkness scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman talks about the approach to the use of multiple villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, saying that such a character needs to be essential to the story and not be a throwaway character.

Next summer's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will introduce new villains Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and MAYBE Green Goblin (Chris Cooper). Especially after Spider-Man 3 featured three villains, it's often worrying when a film features several villains at once, and for good reason. But speaking with MTV Splash Page at the premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman address this concern, saying that a villain (or any character) should not be featured in a movie just for the sake of being there. "I think you have to go into it and say, 'is this character essential to the story or are you just throwing him in for no reason whatsoever'," said Kurtzman. "We would never do anything other than what felt like it was organic to the flow of the story. A lot of consideration was given to the construction of that [story], so that when you see it, you'll get the big picture." What do you think of the idea of including multiple villains in one superhero movie? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Shailene Woodley, Dane DeHaan, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper and Sally Field. The film is set to hit theaters May 2nd, 2014.

I've always liked Electro, but not as a MOVIE villain...

...I wanted Mysterio, but whatever. We didn't even get an official look at him yet so I'll wait and see (I said OFFICIAL... he'll probably be glowing)...

This guy is being a hypocrite. He criticizes Spiderman 3 for having too many villains. But in The Amazing Spiderman 2, we have Electro, Rhino, rumored black cat, and I'm pretty sure Green Goblin since Emma Stone is going to die.

And am I the only one who likes Spider Man 3?

@SpecialKail

Besides what happened to Venom, (which I had no problem with), what was wrong with SM3?

I thought Spider-Man 3 bit off more than it could chew. I don't think it was near as bad as people make it out to be, but there was just too much going on. Just my opinion though.

The thing with Spider-Man 3 is it tried to give each of the three villains equal relevance to the story, and it ended up feeling like none of them got properly fleshed out. With The Amazing Spider-Man 2, my assumption is Electro will be the main villain with the character arc, Rhino will be a thug/supporting villain with less screen time, and Osborn will be pulling the strings. It's easier to juggle when you write with the idea "not all villains are created equal", but that doesn't mean they aren't essential to the plot in some way.

Spider-Man 3 is really a guilty pleasure. It bothers me, but I love it to death. No matter how bad it got, it was always so much fun to watch. :)

@MrCBM56 I think it's a decent movie. I enejoy watching it as long as remember to press skip-button on my remote when the infamous emo-dance starts.

@Viltrumite

I understand what you're saying. But that's what happens when fans demand a villain. For example

Fans demanded The Mandarin in IM3, we saw how that turned out.

Fans demanded Venom in SM3, we saw how that turned out.

Fans demanded Galactus, we saw how that turned out.

Fans demanded Talia ah Ghul, we saw how that turned out.

Yeah, that was unnecessary.

Three villains can work. Its just about how you write it.

About Spider-Man 3. Action sequences were awesome but the story felt forced. Plus there was many other things i didnt like. People over acting and all.
But thats just my opinion. If someone loves it... good for her/him.

It would be cool to see Hammerhead in the gangster role instead Rhino. Josh Brolin would nail that part perfectly.
Tombstone would have been awesome also.

I can't stop laughing at that photoshopped Rhino/Giamatti picture in the banner of this article...just makes me think he'll be running around shouting his name like Matt Damon in Team America...

By all rights, the best thing they could have done in Spider-Man 3 was to end the Symbiote's involvement when people removed it and then have a scene the final scene/ shot of the movie or the after credit scene be where Eddie Brock becomes Venom, thus setting that story up for the sequel. That's how I thought it would play out before originally seeing the movie anyway.

Yeah, the only bad thing in Spider-Man 3 was Venom's inclusion. It should have been a post-credit scene, leading into the fourth movie, ALL-OUT VENOM VS SPIDEY !

Unfortunately, we didn't have that.

The dance scene doesn't even bother me. People freaking out about it are taking it WAAAAY too seriously. I think it's only goofy, at most.

TheAmazingSpiderHyphenMan - So TDK? Scarecrow in beginning, Joker as main villain, and Two-Face at the end? I'd like it to go like that though.

I can't put my thumb exactly on what it was about S3. The Parker as a bad boy scenes hurt. I agree about the MJ sub-plot. If written and acted well, the number of villains does not have to be the downfall. Look at Batman Begins-We had two "supervillains" and Falcone, but the story flowed and each was integral to the plot. R'as Al Ghul was the main villain, but behind the scenes in most of the movie. Look at Avengers-you have Loki as the main villain the aliens and Thanos behind the scenes. It is all about the story and S-3 just didn't have it together well enough. Not awful either, but a bit of a disappointment after 1 and 2.

That peter's quest for the truth about his parent's lead's to gwen's death

There's a reason Spiderman 4 didn't happen people. That's cause the script stunk just about as much as S3. So grateful for the reboot. Don't even want to think about what Raimi had in store for S4. Probably would've been a damn musical, lol

Peter and Harry's big fight at the beginning of SM3 was better than anything in ASM.. A good music score goes a long way.
But yeah, SM3 had issues. None of which are Raimi's fault I believe.
