Should Gwen Stacy die in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

It's been alleged that Gwen Stacy will likely meet her tragic comic book fate in the next Spidey film, but is it really the right way for them to go?

So far The Amazing Spider-Man 2 seems to be shaping up pretty nicely. The new costume is practically perfect and the pre-CG villains are looking pretty cool (in a cautiously optimistic way, although I do think that Paul Giamatti is seriously looking the part for Rhino). The one piece of ASM2 gossip that is on everyone’s lips the most however is the fate of poor old Gwen Stacy. All of us even vaguely familiar with the Spidey mythos know what ultimately happens to her: she gets thrown off a bridge and dies (you know, for kids!). When the character was announced to be the leading love interest for the Webhead in the rebooted film series, fan boys immediately started speculating that the new film universe may over time be dealing with the arc of her death, and from what has been rumoured (and more or less confirmed by Stone herself) about the sequel to Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man it looks like we may be seeing this sooner rather than later. This raises the question: is having Gwen die in ASM2 a good idea or a bad idea?

“The Night Gwen Stacy Died” is one of the most notably tragic stories in superhero comic book history, and one that is considered defining for Spider-Man. The idea that a hero could actually fail to save someone (his own girlfriend no less) had been virtually unthinkable beforehand, so the story arc had a pretty significant impact on the genre. It’s been my belief for a while that it is a story deserving of a film adaptation, however I feel that there are both pros and cons to executing it at this stage in the game. The main con is that since we’ve only known Stone’s character for one movie, we might not know her well enough for her death to have that huge of an impact on us. While she has so far been played in a pretty likable and endearing way, saving her death for the third installment would allow the audience to grow more attached to her and therefore be more sad to see her go. So yeah…too soon maybe? Another con would be an issue of faithfulness to the source material: either Electro or Rhino (most likely Electro) would presumably be the one to kill her instead of the Green Goblin, seeing as Norman is not set to appear as the Goblin in this film (although there’s always the possibility that we might be surprised). While she might still be killed at the behest of Norman if he’s the mastermind behind all the s**t hitting the fan, would it really be the same? The fact that Osborn personally killed Spider-Man’s girlfriend in the comics was a defining point for their hero/villain relationship, one that undoubtedly granted him “arch-nemesis” status, so if this is changed for the film then I don’t think it will be nearly as dramatic unless they’re going for a different angle (will Electro take on that “arch nemesis” status instead?).

Anyway, let’s move on to the pros. The reason I think that the death of Gwen Stacy would be a great thing to tackle in the films is that it adds a new layer of emotional depth to Spider-Man. His character is built on tragedy, i.e. the death of a loved one[s] much like most other superheroes, but his tragedy is much more personal than that of say Superman or Batman as he is actually driven by the belief that he is responsible for it because he didn’t use his powers in the way that he should have. This motivation for being a superhero is somewhat compromised after the death of Gwen Stacy, in addition to her father George, as Pete feels that they both died as a result of him being Spider-Man and getting deeply involved with all these maniacal nut-jobs. This further complicates his guilt complex and causes him to question his life and purpose as a masked hero. Now wouldn’t that make for some damn good cinematic drama? Adding to this, a hero failing to save his love interest is something rarely seen in superhero films. Apart from Dark Knight and Daredevil, I can’t think of many others that have done it (yes Lois Lane kind of died at the end of Superman but then Supes did the whole fly around the world and reverse time thing, kind of a WTF moment when you think about it). It certainly hasn’t been done in a Spider-Man film, although the bridge scene was done with MJ in Spidey 1 they copped out in true Hollywood style and let her live, so if Gwen is to die in the next film it will certainly be surprising and interesting in that respect (at least for the non comic book fans who hadn’t seen it coming since before the first one was released). While some may think it's way too soon to kill Gwen Stacy off, I feel that if they do it right it could truly set this film apart from the other Spider-Man films and make it the very best.

So it looks like we may be getting to see whether or not Emma Stone can own a death scene (the trademark for many a great actor). What are your thoughts?

If Emma falls, I would catch her and make sure she doesn't die. I have a crush on Ms Stone. Andrew you lucky son of a bitch.

@DrDoom seriously, never cast a movie. For the sake of movie-goers everywhere, never, ever, ever cast a movie. Because your taste is shocking. Andrew Garfield a bad actor? Unless you happen to be Gary Oldman, Robert DeNiro, or Daniel Day-Lewis, I really don't think you're the guy to critique Andrew Garfield's acting. He happens to actually be a very talented, very promising actor.

And hey, at least this Spider-Man only cries when something bad actually happens, unlike the previous version who seemed to cry in every other scene. I mean, seriously, I'm surprised Tobey Maguire didn't dehydrate making those movies considering the number of crying scenes he had to do... poor guy must've been on a drip between takes.

Gwen should die, get us Black Cat for sequel.
@ACira Did you just compare Andrew Garfield to Oldman, DeNiro and Day-Lewis; not saying Garfield is bad, but that was the overvaluation of the century.

I know you put a lot of effort into this, but I wanted to for warn you that it was confirmed by Emma Stone that she would die in this movie, so the editors may or may not delete the article.

Regardless of that, however, I do think it would've been better to flesh out her character just a bit more before killing her off. I thought Webb was gonna do that, but now with him apparently having 4 villains in the movie, a sub plot with some serum, and the evolution of Spider Man/Peter as a character, I'm worried he'll mess it up and not give her the proper final development she needs because he won't have time. Hopefully, it'll work out though.

Hehehehehehehehe.....

Soto gave me a funny (if not retarded) mental image.

Gwen dies Rachel Dawes style (well, not in a Joker explosion, but you know...) and after Peter goes to great and illegal lengths to wipe the floor with her villainous killer(s), we'll get someone like Robbie explaining to Betty that Spider-man's the hero New York needs as he's being chased by cops.

And then we'll get a third movie, where he's been living in Aunt May's basement for 8 years. And Aunt May sets him up with Mary Jane, even though he's skipped college and she's moved out and on her own....

...and by the end we'll find out that Miles Warren has cloned Mary Jane, and that she's just getting revenge for Gwen, because the Jackal had a creepy obsession with her.

Ooooh and maybe Felicia Hardy will sell Pete out, and then make amends by cutting a cable holding a suspensed load randomly positioned over Jackal.

I would be disappointed if they teased her death a lot and then it didn't happen. Although, if they made TASM3 a Goblin film and she died then, I'd be cool with it. Just don't lead us into thinking she dies in TASM2 and then not do it.

@DrDoom you must really nt know what the [frick] you're talking about when you talk acting. Andrew Garfield won a BAFTA award and was nominated for a GG. Comparing him to those three actors isn't all that shameful, he is actually what those men were when they were young. He is a better actor than any other CBM actor currently other than Cavil and RDJ. So get over yourself, you sound like a dumbass when you say an actor like Andrew Garfield whom received a massive amount of crtical acclaim in Red riding, The Social Network and Boy A. WTF have you seen Boy A?!?! Of course not. You seriously sound like a [frick]ing idiot when to say something like that about a terrific actor

@DrDoom Honestly, I think you're being a little too hard on Garfield. I'm not bashing your opinion or anything (I can see why you don't think he's a good actor), but I personally enjoy his work and his take on Peter Parker. But that's just me. A lot of people feel the way I do, and a lot feel the way you do. I'm not asking you to change your opinion. All I'm asking is to be a little nicer about it. I don't see the need to call him a "shitty [frick]ing actor" when there are millions that are worse than him. I just don't think he deserves all the hate.

@DrDoom hahaha aww little baby shit her pants:) actually cage WAS a good actor. If I wanna express my feelings towards your " opinion". And quite frankly I think you're an idiot by saying he's a " terrible [frick]ing actor". So go on troll join your other little friends and blindly follow whatever you like and bash on anything that's not made by Marvel studios:) dumbass

It's your opinion you don't like him. Sure, but when a movie like TDK comes out everyone likes it there is one person that doesn't. It's a valid opinion that they don't, but they still look like a [frick]ing dumbass who doesn't what they're talking about. You have yet to give me a good reason as too why you don't think he's a good actor. Especially after he was praised for knocking it out of the park in TASM.

Hell I've been known to bash TASM but I think Andrew wasn't that bad. He was good. I just don't like how he was written but his performance was good.

ACira, really? Tobey cried for no reason? I would think his Uncle's death, admitting to his Aunt that he was responsible for it, finding out that his Uncle's killer was still loose, being dumped by the girl he was about to propose to, forgiving the killer and his best friend dying were very justified reasons for crying. Realising after 10 years that your parents are gone is a much less justified reason to cry.

I think Andrew has great acting talent as shown in 'The Social Network'. The reason I don't find him a great Peter Parker is because of the writing. It made him come off as too full of himself. I would be fine with that if it didn't continue till the end credits start rolling.

I won't respond directly to the trolls, but Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are fantastic actors and key reasons why the Spider-Man films by Marc Webb rise above most other cbms, IMO. I'll just say that calling Andrew Garfield a horrible actor sounds pretty DrDumb to me.

Killing Gwen would be a very tricky thing to do in the movie. Sure, they could kill her but Mary Jane wouldn't have the same impact in Peter's life Gwen had. When fans see her, they might complain that Mary Jane is just being introduced just so that Peter can have a love interest. Not to mention how popular Emma Stone is. Removing the female lead of the franchise is a huge risk. I just hope the crew knows what it's doing.

Wasn't comparing Garfield to those actors, just exaggerating the fact that you're not really in a position to call him a bad actor (especially as he's not a bad actor by any definition) and if anyone was able to call him 'bad' it'd be them or one of the many talented actors who've been working as long as they have - maybe I worded it poorly or it was a poor example or whatever, but I just basically meant that he's actually very talented and he could go far, and that you're being pretty unfair toward him.

Honestly though, I'd struggle to name any actors in his generation who are better than him. He's right up there in that category, so he could one day be of a similar status to those actors I listed, in terms of his generation. There again, I don't really know of all that many young actors anyway.

@Dr Doom to be fair, you have a point on the awards thing... they aren't necessarily proof of how good an actor is, especially considering Nicholas Cage has an Oscar. I think the only time you can take those kinds of awards seriously is in the case of people like Daniel Day-Lewis, who won 3 Best Actor awards. Awards committees do get it wrong quite often, but when someone wins multiple times it's more likely that they deserve their awards.

Killing her off would be nothing but a waste. An iconic part of the comics? Who cares? This isn't the comics. It, like every Superhero movie that's come before, is in a completely different continuity, and for those of you say, "there's nothing left to do with her character" bringing in MJ or Debra or Betty, would almost certainly just be retreading old ground, and I can't imagine them having traits that would make them especially interesting. Seriously, what purpose would they fulfil that Gwen couldn't? How would they be different? If it's not broken, don't fix it, and there's nothing wrong with Gwen's character, or their relationship. I say, keep them together, keep her alive, see where it goes. Gwen is cute, feisty, likeable, she and Peter go great together, and they're happy. I can't imagine why anyone in their right minds would throw everything out the window, just for the sake of nerd-pandering.

I think they should keep Gwen Stacy. Emma Stone is a very good actress and she and Andrew have really good chemistry. Gwen is supposed to have a huge impact on Peter and the audience. So it doesn't make any sense to just kill her off after one movie. I personally never liked Mary Jane anyway. She didn't have nearly as much emotional impact on Peter like Gwen did. I mean, Peter barely knows Gwen right now!! It seems stupid and like a complete waste of a character to kill her off now. Her death was one of the most tragic ones in comic history, so doing it after one movie is kinda lame. They should change the story a little bit. That's what all good movie directors do. They change it up and make it their own. I think it would be a waste to kill Gwen off now. She's a good character and they could do much more with her. It's not like they are just restricted to making her exactly as comic book Gwen was.

well i don't think that Gwen should die.and if she does they should save it for the third movie. in 1 of the articles i read they said in the first spider man movie Mary Jane fell of a bridge and peter caught her right. And they were thinking if peter had to make a choice between MJ and Gwen while they were falling off th was such a great ides i know ie bridge he caught Gwen with his arms first and then he tries to catch mj with webbing but the same fate that happened to gewn would happen to mj. I just thought this dosent follow the comics but this is the movies not the comics(no offense)that idea would be an amazing twist.PS.i did not think of the idea it was the person who made the article.
