Bleeding Cool just posted the following excerpt concerning some footage of next year's Spider-Man reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, screened recently at Sony, particularly praising the quality of the RED Epic Camera (unfortunately, no description of the actual scene[s] are here)...

Some footage from Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man was screened at Sony over the weekend, and the gurus from RED, the digital camera people who provided the kit on which the film was shot, were invited along. Of course he has a vested interest, but the subsequent comments of Jim Jannard, the founder of RED, are nicely encouraging.

Jannard spoke to Amazing Spidey cinematographer John Schwartzman at the screening, and quoted the DOP’s words in an update to the RED User forum. Here’s what he tells us Mr. Schwartzman said:

'This is the best looking footage I have ever shot… these are the best images I have ever seen. No, really… this is the best footage I have ever seen from any camera. Ever.'

Jannard also shared his own take on the material:

'I have to say that we were all stunned. Shocked. So incredible. Not like RED ONE MX. Not like anything we had seen from another camera. Same resolution and feel of our new EPIC reel, but with actors and a story and Schwartzman’s ability to light.'

The consensus in the room (to a person) was that this looked like film. Like 65mm film. Better. Without any trace of film’s blocky detail in shadows or grain. Jaw dropping.

Mr. Jannard has played his “Best Camera Evah!” card. I don’t think he’d have been so bold had the footage not been, at the very least, very, very good. He’s normally very enthusiastic, but I don’t think he’s ever really gone this far before.

The Amazing Spider-Man swings into theaters July 3rd, 2012!
