THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN: Disney+ Has Removed Beloved Animated Series Without Warning

We'd heard that Disney+ would start removing content as a means of saving money, but a lot of Marvel fans are upset today after The Spectacular Spider-Man vanished from the streamer without any warning.

The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series ran from 2008 to 2009 and was developed by Greg Weisman and Victor Cook.

Following the adventures of Peter Parker as he balanced high school life with his responsibilities as a superhero, the show combined classic Spider-Man storytelling with a modern perspective on the character's relationships, villains, and origin.

Praised for its compelling storytelling, well-developed characters, and eye-catching animation, The Spectacular Spider-Man received praise from critics and fans alike.

Green Goblin, Venom, and Doctor Octopus were among the villains that appeared, and the show was lauded for its faithfulness to the source material, incorporating elements from the original comics in a way that welcomed new and old fans alike. Despite all of that, the series was cancelled after its second season, leaving us with a memorable but limited number of episodes.

Unfortunately, as we first reported on Toonado.com, they've now vanished from streaming.

As we write this, The Spectacular Spider-Man is no longer available to watch on Disney+ in the United States or UK. We have no explanation for the decision. Other Spider-Man animated TV shows and live-action movies remain, so we'd guess this boils down to some sort of licensing issue. Either way, the series is now gone.

Josh Keaton reprised his role as Peter in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, leading to renewed interest in the show. Needless to say, that makes its absence from Disney+ all the more surprising.

Last year, we had the opportunity to sit down with writer Greg Weisman to discuss his work on Catwoman: Hunted. As you might expect, we had to ask the mastermind behind the popular Spider-Man series what it means to him to see the show trending as fans express their love for the show.

"Well, it’s very gratifying that the fans love it," he responded. "We’re getting off-topic here, but it’s not that I wouldn’t want to do it again. Just to clarify, I would love to do it again. I just don’t understand any path to that. I don’t see it. I’d love to be wrong, but I just don’t see it. We loved working on that show. We had a blast, but that’s not what we’re here to talk about [Laughs]."

Unfortunately, the door appears to be closed on The Spectacular Spider-Man, but it's not Weisman's decision, and if it was going to come back, it probably would have by now. A comic book continuation or something along those lines would no doubt be welcomed by fans, but we're not banking on it. Stranger things have happened, though.

We'll be sure to keep you updated on what's happening with The Spectacular Spider-Man as and when we learn more.

@MrDandy - Evidently not enough of you want 'more' to make it financially feasible. The license fee Disney has to pay Sony ain't cheap.

Wanna emphasize first that I hate this.

That being said it does make sense. I'm not sure they have the rights of the show since they didn't make it. So keeping it on disney+ means they need to pay licensing.

Without warning…. Did they need to send you a note first?

It’s not like they pulled Bluey or similarly popular product.

@WhatIfRickJames - To be fair, a lot of streaming services will tell you in advance when certain movies and shows are going away. Some, like Amazon Prime, also have a dedicated section for them.

@WhatIfRickJames - it's common practice to give a date when a show is being taken off.

@kazuma - This is why owning Physical Media is the way. Things like this will continue to happen forcing the consumer to hop to different streaming networks. I learned this with The Office.

@SonOfAGif - Yup. It's why I've been buying physical for movies/shows I really like.

Buy physical, this is how streaming companies get you to buy all these [frick]ing subscriptions. I buy physical and then rip them to my plex with MakeMKV, so my digital copies are 60-80 gig files. I oughta smack the clowns who download 1.8 gig files, it's sacrilege. Then again I have a 100tb NAS lol

I’ll just buy it digitally, it’s still up on iTunes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the main issue isn’t physical vs digital as much as it is ownership vs subscription

@Ha1frican - but can't they take away digital media that you own? There are games I've bought that's no longer in my library
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 12/5/2023, 10:43 PM
@MyCoolYoung - What games? I’ve never seen a digital license for a game revoked, only PT which wasn’t a fully released game. For movies I’ve only seen it on smaller platforms like what happened with PlayStation’s Discovery content but that’s because Sony stopped paying the licenses probably because no one buys things on that platforms and it’s cheaper to cut their losses. For games the only time I’ve seen delisted content not be downloadable aside from PT is Stadia when the whole platform went under which everyone should have seen from a mile away. I’ve have several movies and games get delisted like Coraline, Inglourious Basterds, and Watchmen Ultimate Cut get delisted on ITunes and never lost access to them and the same with games like Driveclub on PlayStation

@Ha1frican - I don't have access to none of the 2ks I bought after a certain year. They took it out the store now its not in my library. I've heard something similar
