TASM: Marc Webb Reveals Why He Went With The "Snoutless" Lizard

Collider have just posted a lengthy interview with The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb, in which he discusses many aspects of the movie - including casting, special effects, and the new trailer. But what caught my eye was the excerpt below, as Webb reveals the reasons behind the particular look he went with for the villain of the movie, The Lizard..

There’s a lot that goes into it. When we shot those sequences, we actually shot a human. There was a guy named Big John, who is literally this big guy named John, who did a lot of the interactive stuff. When you’re trying to interact with Peter [Parker], you need someone grabbing him and to do those things, and then we would replace him with the computer-generated lizard. But then, the performance capture was done with Rhys [Ifans]. We would shoot Rhys in a similar environment and get his facial expressions, and we’re still working on that. I just came from trying to incorporate his performance into The Lizard. That takes an enormous amount of time and it’s tricky. In the comics, there are different incarnations of The Lizard. There’s the one with the snout, but I was interested more in something that could relate human emotions because I wanted to keep Rhys’ performance in that creature. Pixar does it extremely well, creating those emotions within characters that are essentially computer-generated. So, getting that nuance and the eyebrow ticks and the looks, and creating something that can actually speak with lips that make sounds, is a very detailed and, frankly, tedious process. But, I really wanted him to have emotion, have a face and have feeling. That’s the way I chose to do that. And then, there’s the physical components of it, which was making him very powerful and strong.

Many fans were a bit disappointed that they didn't get the more bestial creature with the full snout that is frequently seen in the comics nowadays, but Webbs explanation certainly makes sense now that we know his intentions for the character. Oh, and the director also reveals that the running time will be close to 2 hours..

"Yeah, it’s right around two hours. There was something on some website that said it was an hour and 30 minutes, or something like that. No. Every once in a while, it’s really interesting because you hear people talk about information that gets out and you’re like, “Oh, yeah, there’s some truth to it.” But sometimes, things come up and you’re like, “What are you talking about?!” That’s one of those things. I just don’t know where that came from. The cut is pretty much locked. We’re just doing a lot of visual stuff."

Yeah, that was us. Sorry Marc! In our defense we got it from a listing on a theater website, and we did mark it as a rumor. 2 hours sounds much better indeed. There is MUCH more to the interview, so be sure to click the link back to Collider below to check it out.

You may not like it, but it makes a lot more sense going with the snoutless version. He looks great anyways, and we got the labcoat for a certain period in the film. Can't wait.

There ARE ways to do make emotion work with a snout. An innovative director can do anything. Sadly sounds like Webb went with the easy way out

ISleepNow, i agree. It would have been nice to see a snout. I see where hes going with it, but I hope Conners does more experiments on himself near the end, or evolves somehow and ends up getting the snout. That way he could be used for sequels, I doubt it, but i can dream. Cant wait!

completely agree with INSTANTJUSTICE. the project has a certain budget that they really try not to go over. i could already tell you that the lizard with the snout would have been extremely costly and we know what happens with a film that cost too damn much. shitty actors. Besides....this is first appearance of the lizard who did not have a snout...he may evolve like in the comics.

Even if I would have preferred the snout, here's what I like... he made a choice and backed it up with something that made total sense. It's not the choice I would have made, but I can respect it and move on with letting him entertain me now.

Trailer was not as good as The Avengers trailer and doesnt even come close to the Dark Knight Rises trailer but it was a good trailer overall. As a huge Spiderman fan I am happy with what I saw out of this trailer.

I have not watch the trailer yet. I want to see it for the first time at the movie theater before The Avengers.

Same reason why I only seen TDKR trailer once, lol.

@Nick56: I disagree. I actually thought it was better than both of those film's trailers. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Having said that, I think the action in Avengers will be better than in TASM, and I think the story in TDKR will be better. Just predictions. Spidey's my favorite character and I'm really rooting for this franchise though.

My hope is to get the nuanced character studies, characteristic of Nolan's Batman franchise mixed with the crazy, fun, surreal action in the Avengers. That's what Spider-man should offer.

2 hours will be just fine. Wouldn't mind it being longer, but the first Spider-Man movie was about the same running time.

I liked this newest Spidey trailer (changed my opinion of this movie almost 180 degrees) more than latest TDKR (sorry, I thought it was boring), but less than the first Avengers trailer that featured the Hulk catching Iron Man (a 'Oh shit' moment hard to compete with).

Spidey's my favorite cbm character but somehow i am not rooting for this reboot.

i would have prefer the Lizard with the snout, as someone already pointed out in this age and tech, everything conceivable could be possible.

Why do directors try and create the actor and his emotions and face movements to be in a CGI Character for christ sake...

He is a Lizard and should of look menacing not human...

Surely you can make any CGI Character to talk regardless of wheter he is human or not...

@Wonderer: And let me guess, an example of an "innovative" director would be...Joss Whedon? Bwahaha!

@InstantJustice: True dat. We are all expert film-makers in our own little minds, some of us are just better at dealing with reality.

Right around 2 hours. Sounds like what Celebration Cinema has it listed at. In other news, Nolinites will still continue to insist that TDKR is three hours even though Celebration has it listed at 2:16.
