Willem Dafoe Once Again Knocks THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Reboot

When Willem Dafoe was doing press for John Carter he took a few shots at Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man, yet he hadn't seen it. Now, he is back with a few more choice comments, and yet again, he still hasn't seen the film. Come see what he has to say!

Willem Dafoe has been doing press for his new video game Beyond: Two Souls and of course Total Film decided to ask the actor his thoughts on Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man reboot, since he played Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002).

“I saw a trailer for the first Spider-Man reboot and I thought, ‘This is crazy! It’s not shot for shot, but it’s the same story,’” Dafoe told us. “I thought, ‘This is sort of a cynical approach to making money!’”

Discusses the pureness of the first film as compared to the rest:
“It really was (very pure). The way Sam Raimi approached it, it was pure in its intentions and I think he captured, particularly, Tobey [Maguire] at that particular moment.

He later confesses that he doesn't have the time to watch the reboot. He also was asked to share his thoughts about fellow actor, Chris Cooper, taking on the role of Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

“You know, in the theatre, people play the same role all the time. I don’t know anything about it, really,” he says.

TASM2 - Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be directed by Marc Webb from a script written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt. The film will star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Sally Field as Aunt May, Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson, Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Jamie Foxx is Electro and Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn. The Amazing Spider-Man sequel will swing into theaters May 2, 2014.

That's like saying the passion of christ is ripping off every movie about Jesus. smh. I liked defoe as GG but I totally disagree with him on this one.

Is he trying to say that nobody should ever do spidey's origin story again?

I really tried to like it. But, it just sucked on so many levels. It was a 'paint by numbers' film. No joy, no originality, just blaaaa.

@Doom, not to mention it basically just told a more "tweenish" version of the same story. And it was too soon.

Oh boy it's happening again in the comments section...

TASM sucked as simple as that, props to Willem Dafoe, but he should seriously play the Green Goblin again.

I don't think TAS is best spidey movie ever but I don't see people act like they didn't expect to see what they saw in the cinema. We all knew it was going to be about Peter developing his powers in high school and it was going to be an origin story. Sure 'The untold story' was cut out in post-production but isn't bashing this movie like beating a dead horse?

There were some things I liked better about TASM -- the fact that Spider-man actually had quips while fighting, it was less emo, Stone was far better than Dunst, and Leary did a great job. However, Raimi's version got more things right -- better suit (although it appears TASM is fixing that in the sequel), Parker is wimpier, better Uncle Ben and Aunt May, and JJJ was absolutely perfect casting.

I don't think the new one is horrible, but I would say it is is not quite as good . . . yet. It will be hard to beat Doc Ock as one of the best CBM villains ever. On the other hand, SM3 was such a letdown that we can hope that this new incarnation won't have a really bad one like that.

I though TASM's biggest downfall was how it was edited. Shots cutting away at the wrong time and dialogue not fitting together right. So many cringe-worthy moments.

Hopefully Webb gets better with experience, looking forward to seeing the Rhino!

@PsychoManiacJacky so... gwen tending to peter's wounds and Bella and Edwad dancing makes them the same?

@Linkavitch

Actually taking out those scenes was a huge mistake -_- The movie felt disjointed and the editing was horrible. Those scenes would have made the movie better especially the scene with Connors and his kid.

" I don't necessarily believe that. Well, it was 'tweenish', but the 'too soon' argument doesn't hold enough weight for me, especially when The Incredible Hulk was a very good reboot released five years after the original; the same timeframe as TASM."

Incredible hulk told different story instead of the origin story all over again. All I think throughout ASM was: "seen it, seen it, seen it." That really kept me from taking anything seriously.

As for the tween thing, Peter is basically how tweens describe nerds. Attractive, athletic, well dressed and likable.....but with Glasses. Plus the entire romance is struggless and it basically holds together simply because the leads have great chemistry. Too beautiful leads just spend the entire movie happily in love after just meeting? That's a 13 year old's idea of a great romance.

@linkavitch

Basically what I was saying.

The lines were right, the actors and settings were fine, but Webb had they play out in asymmetric ways, a lot of scenes just don't flow like they should.

@Mexicansupes, skateboarding removes the nerd from Peter. Nerd is what made him relatable.

He's a dick since he's selfish til the end of the movie and won't redeem himself til the sequel.

Peter beign an skater is like if The Cap was racist, is the most antithetical concept you can think of when your refereing toa character like Peter Parker.

I was comparing the overly teenish and corny relationship values to Twilight to what they did in TASM which felt like the same bullshit all over again Hollywood is doing. The only reason why they are trying to make TASM so hip and edgy is because they want to appeal to a newer generation of cringles that don't appreciate the values of the original. It's clearly evident throughout the film. They made Spider-Man an overbearing irresponsible joker and there was barely any evidence of Peter Parker's own genius and wits as he was in the comics.

At times the film tried to be serious but lost it's tone completely all together. I felt like I was watching a dramatized version of Spider-Man produced by CW. They tried to pull the same crap in Smallville trying to bring the character of Superman to a newer generation. For once can we just get a more mature hero. We already know Spider-Man's origins it's just an updated retelling once again. Where Batman Begins retold the origins of Batman perfectly TASM just doesn't understand and yes it does borrow elements and tones from Batman Begins. Imagine if Warner Bros made a film with a teen version of Batman? WB despite their incompetence at times wouldn't be stupid enough to pull that shit. Lesson were definitely learnt from Smallville and how it massively failed. I wish Sony would just balls up and give us an adult version of Spider-Man. One Spider-Man storyline I would love to see adapted is Spider-man:Reign and how they handled a more darker version.
