2023 will mark the end of the DCEU, but one of its first noteworthy critical flops - 2016's Suicide Squad - simply will not die.
Despite not boasting a fanbase quite as passionate as those who demanded Warner Bros. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, there are plenty of people who would love for the studio to ultimately #ReleaseTheAyerCut.
Concerned about the response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it's no secret Warner Bros. butchered filmmaker David Ayer's vision ]. A series of catchy songs were inserted, the ending was completely changed, and a trailer editing company were among those who changed Suicide Squad's look and feel.
Even before cameras started rolling, Ayer faced resistance, with plans for Steppenwolf to serve as the movie's big bad scrapped relatively early on.
Now, it appears we're one step closer to seeing what the director had planned for the movie.
"Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything?" Ayer asked on Twitter/X. "I have. All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release."
"The interest in my cut being [shown] seems real and organic. And [James] Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects."
Ayer's Suicide Squad may well see the light of day after all, though it clearly won't be for a while yet. It's already been seven years, so whether enough people will even care beyond the DCEU loyalists is hard to say...
