Regardless of what form an "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad may or may not take, there's no getting around the fact that the version of the movie we saw in theaters was deeply flawed. Despite that, there was still a lot to love about the film, and Diablo was an undeniable highlight.
His story arc left a lasting impact, and while things did get a little goofy when he transformed into an Aztec God, it was the trauma of him inadvertently killing his family that really resonated.
However, that's something we very nearly didn't get to see in Suicide Squad. In fact, director David Ayer has taken to Twitter (again) to reveal that keeping that moment with Diablo, his wife, and children was "the only battle I won." As he notes, "Decision makers were allergic to Diablo killing his family."
In some respects, it's not hard to see why, but this movie was supposed to revolve around a team of despicable villains forced to do the right thing, and that's going to mean they have some unpleasant baggage.
The #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign continues to gain steam thanks to reveals like this, and you can check out Ayer's Suicide Squad comments in their entirety in the Tweet below:
