When DC Studios announced its slate of DCU movies and TV shows, one of the biggest surprises was a big screen project titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

While Kara Zor-El will return to theaters in The Flash next month, there's a lot of excitement to see what James Gunn and Peter Safran have planned for the character. Chances are that will involve a new actress taking over from Sasha Calle, and you'd best believe we have some ideas when it comes to who can pick up where the likes of Laura Vandervoort and Melissa Benoist left off.

It's been confirmed that Superman: Legacy's Man of Tomorrow will be in his 20s, meaning Supergirl could be a teenager or even slightly older than her cousin! With that in mind, you'll find a wide variety of actresses here, all of whom would bring something exciting to the table as this iconic superhero.

7. Kiernan Shipka

After impressing viewers as a child actor in Mad Men, Shipka put herself on the map with her standout performance as the title character in Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

It's a shame that series was so short-lived, but playing a superhero like Kara would be a huge step forward for the 23-year-old's career. She's certainly got the necessary mettle to do Supergirl justice on screen and the sort of earnestness and confidence to do this character justice.

As Sabrina Spellman, Shipka proved she has what it takes to play the DCU's Girl of Steel.

6. Mckenna Grace

The 16-year-old actress is the youngest suggestion in this feature, but quite easily one of the biggest talents you'll find working in Hollywood today.

Grace earned an Emmy nomination for her work in The Handmaid's Tale and was a scene-stealer in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Her star is very much on the rise and with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow still a good few years away, there's time for the actress to mature into the role of Superman's cousin.

A younger Supergirl would be fun to watch on screen, especially if she's got more experience with her powers than even the slightly older Man of Steel.

5. Peyton List

The comic book that this movie shares a name with features a hard-edged Supergirl who, when we first meet her, is drunk. With that in mind, a slightly older actress would be no bad thing, and the 25-year-old List fits the bill.

Bringing maturity to the role, the Cobra Kai star has proved herself more than capable of kicking butt and is a believable badass. That's a necessary trait for a Supergirl who will likely travel the universe in this film without any backup from her famous cousin.

It also helps that List most definitely looks the part.

4. Madison Iseman

The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star recently expressed interest in playing the DCU's Supergirl and we believe she'd knock it out of the park.

After proving she has what it takes to star in a VFX-heavy action role with Knights of the Zodiac, the 26-year-old has all the required attributes to bring Kara to life on screen in a way that should make fans happy.

If Supergirl has been a hero longer than even Superman, then an actress who can showcase that maturity while still having some fun with the role is absolutely essential. Those are traits Iseman definitely has.

3. Sasha Calle

It might feel like we're cheating a little by including Calle, but there's a very real possibility DC Studios will give The Flash star a chance to continue on as Supergirl.

In that movie, the actress will play an alternate reality version of Kara who has spent her life locked in a bunker by the government before she's broken out by Batman and the Scarlet Speedster. That's quite a history and one that could somehow be adapted for the DCU.

We don't think it will happen based on comments from Gunn and Safran, but considering the fact Calle is a talented actress who brings some diversity to the role, we'd have no problem with a possible return.

2. Samara Weaving

From Ready to Not to The Babysitter: Killer Queen and Scream VI, Weaving has impressed us with her work in the horror realm on multiple occasions now.

The oldest actress on this list at 31, she would be a mature Kara who, potentially, is not only Superman's elder but his mentor as well. That could be an exciting new dynamic to explore, and we'd definitely buy Weaving as a Kara who is a little more battled hardened and badass.

Ultimately, a casting decision like this will largely hinge on what Gunn has planned for Superman.

1. Anya Taylor-Joy

You shouldn't need us to tell you what a fantastic actress Taylor-Joy is, especially if you've seen her work in The Queen's Gambit and Last Night in Soho (heck, we'd even add the otherwise awful The New Mutants to that list).

As Supergirl, she'd look absolutely striking and bring a certain level of gravitas to this role that would guarantee the character isn't overshadowed by her cousin.

Unlike Wonder Woman, there's no need for the Girl of Steel to look like some hulking powerhouse; the fact Kara doesn't look all that formidable often lulls her enemies into a false sense of security, and it would be a blast watching Taylor-Joy unleash Supergirl's abilities.

No thanks to Anya Taylor-Joy. What she did to her face (buccal fat removal) should disqualify her from the part.

Madison Iseman is the best choice in this list, but I don't think is the best choice available. We'll see what Gunn does. He's been pretty fantastic at casting so far.

@HistoryofMatt - Oh that's why she looks line an alien now...I always wondered why she seemed cute at first and then turned into this "modern fashion" relic of humanity.

@MaxPaint - Yep. Go back and look at Katie Cassidy from Arrow Season 1. Beautiful woman. Apple-cheeked, great smile. Someone who could do both "girl next door" and "drop dead sexy."

Between Season 1 and Season 2, she had buccal fat removal surgery and it changed her entire face into "horse face." Some think it was a chin job, but it wasn't, because by removing the buccal fat, she elongated her face unnaturally, which made her chin the most prominent feature. She absolutely ruined her face. It's such a shame.

This list is weak. Ella Purnell is my pick.
