Yesterday evening, the news broke that House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock will play the DCU's Supergirl. The actress will star in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow but is expected to first make a cameo appearance in next summer's Superman: Legacy.
The casting process is thought to have come down to Alcock and Meg Donnelly, an actress who has lent her voice to Kara Zor-El in the DC Animated Universe on several occasions. Clearly, Alcock impressed DC Studios and she's now been given a thumbs up by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book writer Tom King.
He penned the series which this movie shares a name and premise with, and took to Instagram to say, "She's Supergirl and she doesn't give a #%*# about slings and arrows. Perfect casting. Couldn't be more excited to see Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the world [Bilquis Evely] built, brought to life by this incredible actor. Insanity. It started so small..."
King is thought to be part of the team of writers James Gunn has assembled to help shape the new DCU, though it's unclear what role, if any, he'll play in this adaptation of the critically acclaimed comic book series which saw Supergirl leave Earth to embark on an epic sci-fi adventure.
Last November, we learned that Ana Nogueira will pen the screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The actress and playwright is making her foray into screenwriting with the DC Comics adaptation, though she was also quietly tapped to pen a Supergirl movie for Warner Bros. when the studio was developing a Sasha Calle-led The Flash spin-off.
The Scarlet Speedster’s solo outing was in post-production at the time but the project was scrapped when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios and moved on from Walter Hamada’s planned DCEU slate.
This new Supergirl movie is based on Tom King’s hit Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow run published between 2021 and 2022. Calle clearly won't be getting a second chance to play Kara Zor-El, even though Gunn was a big fan of The Flash and went so far as to describe it as "the greatest superhero movie ever made." Perhaps the filmmaker will find a different role for her in the DCU?
"Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, she is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton," Gunn explained in a video announcing the DCU slate back in January. "She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character."
Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
