This is a question that I’ve been asked time and again over the past couple of weeks and in this post, I’m going to attempt to put forward my unbiased reply to the same.
I personally choose Civil War for the sole reason that the conflict portrayed in the film, if the trailer is anything to go by, just comes off as having a lot more emotional weight and poignancy to it.
I feel part of the reason for that is because Marvel has developed these characters beautifully through the course of all their cinematic “phases” and this development presents the potential for a truly memorable pay off when dealing with a story of conflict among friends.
Consider this – I’m sure a lot of us felt really touched during that whole “I’m sorry Tony, he’s my friend/So was I” line. Why is that? Because we’ve seen these characters work together, we’ve seen them as friends, we’ve see them have differences but we’ve also seen them get over it. So, when these two former friends/team-mates come into a conflict, it just feels more tangible, real and not to mention, emotional.
Also, we’re going to see Spider-Man interact with these characters for the first time and that just makes me even more excited. Add to that, The Russo Brothers who made the fantastic Captain America :The Winter Soldier are helming this one as well, so it basically just sweetens the deal.
That being said, I am still amped for Batman v Superman, but I can’t shake this feeling that they’ve simply shoehorned batman into what should have been a Superman sequel. True, there is the novelty of seeing Batman and Superman onscreen for the first time, but that’s a novelty that’s not going to hold for 2 hours without a solid storyline to back it. Furthermore, bear in mind that Zack Snyder is behind this film, not Nolan, and consistency or subtlety isn’t what Snyder’s known for. (For every 300 and Watchmen he’s made, He’s made a Sucker Punch and Man of Steel)
Moreover, I’m a huge Superman fan and DC has this tendency to always make Batman win in any conflict he’s been just because of his popularity. They’ve done this time and again in the comics and the Animated series; and after the disappointment of Man of Steel, which I was so hyped for, I just don’t want to be let down again.
Now, I could end up being wrong and Batman V Superman could end up winning the oscar for best picture next year for all I know. That being said, these are just my personal thoughts that I’m putting out there.
Why, you ask? Well, because I’m a 21 year old guy who loves movies, superheroes and writing. It’s as simple as that.
