Like many, I was a bit disappointed seeing Man of Steel in theaters. I decided to give it a second try on Blu-Ray and see if my viewpoint changed. When Christopher Nolan was announced as producer, I couldn't have been more excited. I grew up on the 90's Superman animated series and felt there could be so much potential in a modern Superman movie that had not been explored. And Nolan had just made the greatest superhero trilogy ever. Zach Snyder had also made fine movies in 300 and Watchmen. So I went into Man of Steel with high expectations, and left disappointed. Watching it a second time, I realize that's most likely because I went in expecting The Dark Knight trilogy. I decided to watch just as a movie, as a Superman movie, with no comparisons. I'm glad I did. Batman and Superman are totally different characters and belong to different environments. And I should have realized this from watching both the 90's Batman and Superman animated series. They were completely different in tone. I never compared the two, and although I've always liked Batman better, I enjoyed both shows tremendously. On my second Man of Steel viewing, I also enjoyed it. All the characters were right. It seemed real. I actually thought half way through it that I could see this a the plot of a DC animated movie, but this was real. And it's the best live action Superman movie we've ever had. I suggest giving it a second try on blu-ray if you were a little let down in theaters. I'm excited for the DC Cinematic Universe now. We can only hope all the rumors circulating about it as well as DC's tv properties are true.

The first time I saw it in theaters I liked it but thought, like many people, that it had too much action.
Upon seeing it a second time on Blu-Ray, I was wrong. Most of all the action doesn't come up until the very last third of the movie. And the action was insane, FINALLY Superman seemed cool to me.

Couldn't agree more. I don't understand people who complain about this movie. For years it was "Why can't we get a superman movie with enough action?" and now its " there was WAY to much action and destruction in that movie". people are always complaining.

and as far as how many people died in that movie; the majority of people in metropolis died BEFORE superman and Zod started fighting, due to the world engine. There was nothing Supes could do, as he was on the other side of the world destroying the other world engine thing. Furthermore, most of the damage caused by the Supes vs Zod fight was about on par with the amount of destruction in the Avengers. Supes did everything he could to save the citizens in that movie, but there is only so much he can do with Zod coming at him relentlessly.

As far as Supes killing Zod: What other choice did he have? Was he going to let Zod kill that family? Zod himself said he was NEVER going to stop, so Supes did what he had to do. Tt the end he's obviously distraught over it, and it has been confirmed by Snyder that he is going to be dealing with the consequences. His aversion to killing had to start somewhere, and I'm willing to bet that killing Zod is what does it. And lets not forget, he does kill Zod in the comics….

this movie was not perfect, but it is BY FAR, the best superman movie ever made. period.

i personally don't like superman but i did like this film. i loved seeing amora (she was fit) and she kicked ass. like some people i don't like superman killing zod but not because its something superman wouldn't do but rather cos it means we will never see zod again. hate it in films when they just kill major villians when it would be nice to see them return

I'm not a Superman fan either, but I just watched it last night for the first time. It was ok. Like Doom said, the way the flashbacks were done were a little annoying. The story was good, the action was great, and I don't understand why I didn't like it more. I was hoping this movie would make me like the character but I'm just not sure how I really feel about it. Its a good movie. It just didn't excite me.

More people should realize that movies deserve repeat viewings. Sure you can get a general idea of whether the movie worked for you or not, but you pick up on so many more things on the 2nd and 3rd viewings.

That said, repeat viewings for MoS helped confirm that the movie was a huge letdown. I've heard similar reactions to what WYLEEJAY just said, and I think I know why. A lot of people I've talked to aren't exactly sure why they didn't really connect with the movie, but I think deep down they know.

It's about the characters. Sure, the most obvious strengths of the movie is the action, the acting, the soundtrack, etc. But you have to look a little deeper to understand if the characters worked. They didn't. They were extremely bad representations of how characters would react and be like in real life. Even Kal-el (actually, especially him). IMO, that's the biggest downfall of this movie.

@SauronBANE!
Definitely not my case, I enjoyed it the more times I've seen it. Never was a Superman fan until this movie, I always thought he was a lame and campy character, but this movie proved he could be cool and he was.

@DeathstrokeTerminator, I don't know if you took my comment this way but I definitely didn't mean to imply that what I said was 100% true for everyone, I should've made it clear that it was just my opinion.

That said, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I'm not a huge Superman fan either, never saw the Donner movies or anything like that. But I feel like I'd enjoy those movies more than MoS, because from what I hear, they definitely got the Superman character 100% right, campiness and all.

Sure MoS was more updated and more "realistic" but there's an expectation of what the Superman character should be like, and this movie threw all that out the window in favor of overly-long action and destruction sequences.

Henry Cavill is actually really good as Superman, but I had a lot of problems with the story and characterizations. BIG on the action, and really, that's the element everyone was waiting for in a Superman movie, as was I, but it was a trade off on a message of giving in th fear (Even if it’s based on worrying about his son, it’s Jonathan Kent giving into fear instead of allowing Clark to use his powers to help people. There's a lot of ways to play Pa Kent’s death (including avoiding it), but having Clark stand around watching it happen when he could easily prevent it because daddy said so, is nuts in my opinion.)

That pales in comparison to what happens in Metropolis, though. There’s this goofy plot about a gravity machine that’s going to turn Earth into a planet more like Krypton, because “Why would these Kryptonian warriors want to live on a world where they all had superpowers?”, I guess. Rather than just putting the big machine in Metropolis and giving Superman ample opportunity to save people, David Goyer instead writes a movie where Superman has to go fight some other piece of it halfway around the world so that Snyder can destroy a Metropolis for 20 minutes.

Still, I'll give it a second viewing on BluRay... maybe all that lazy writing stuff won't matter the second time around.

@Deathstroketerminator. For the record, I didn't like the Donner films either. None of them. I really enjoyed the first one until Superman flew around the planet and turned back time. Before that it was a great film. Theres just something about Superman that I can't get behind. I'm not a hater, I tried. I didn't expect it to feel like the Dark Knight trilogy. The only version of Superman I ever really enjoyed was Smallville. Until the season finale and he revealed himself as Superman, then moved a planet. Then I hated it. I just don't feel like I can connect with the character. All my favorites I feel a connection to in some way. Something we have in common. I don't have that with Clark Kent possibly because he doesn't truly understand himself. Who is Clark, who is Kal el, he has an identity crisis. I remember in Kill Bill, when Bill told her his opinion on Superman. That Superman modeled Clark Kent in a way that he perceived the human race. As a weakling. Clumsy, uncoordinated, awkward, cowardly. So many character flaws cause he thought that Clark would fit in that way, while Superman stood out, and nobody would suspect that Clark is really Superman. That made me think. Now in the Man of Steel, we know Clark, and we know that Clark and Kal el are the same personality right now. they ddon't act different. If in the next movie Clark starts to pretend that he's that awkward cowardly weakling. Then I will be very displeased with the identity of Clark Kent. Kal el is the mask. Thats the fake identity. Clark grew up as Clark, and Kal el is just his birth name. People often say that Kal el aka Superman is the real character, and Clark is the mask. That shouldn't be true. He GREW up as Clark. Thats who he really is. I think that's my main problem with the character. His identity. Its not solid. It changes all the time on what identity is the primary. Depending on the writer. Bruce Wayne is BRUCE WAYNE. Batman is just a tool. A weapon. Its not that cut and dry with Superman. This is just my opinion. Sorry if you don't like it, and I have tried several times to get into the character. When they make the sequel I will try again. Because I truly love Superheroes.

BTW, the LAST thing i was expecting was something in the level of The Dark Knight Trilogy.... that had, in my opinion, a whole set of problems of its own by the third act.

I loved the movie! I know it's not perfect, but as some would say, this is the most epic Superman movie yet IMHO. (the Donner films were good, but I like this version more).

I watched it twice in the cinema and I'm gonna get me a blue ray copy!

I don't wanna argue about all the complaints some people say anymore, whatever their opinion is, MOS CANNOT be said to be a failure (Batman in HISHE said it's not inspiring, but not disappointing or a failure. hehe). The greenlight on the sequel proves that WB was happy about the performance of the movie despite the complaints.

In any case, I do hope all our concerns are answered in the sequel and we have the most anticipated WORLD's FINEST movie (Come on, every Batman and Superman fan wanted to see the sequel regardless of their reasons for it.)

I love the part where Clark lets his dad die to protect his secret, rather then let him live and endure a harsh media circus, a fate worse than losing a beloved parent.

Deep.

savageguitarist - 11/15/2013, 2:26 AM
xcrementus I dont think that was the point. He let him die because his dad made him promise to keep it a secret. because can you imagine the impact on the world to know a superhuman exists? an alien? that alone would be the end of many religions and probably cause wars. it would be insanity. but he revealed himself by saving earth and I think that eases it in knowing he's a good guy.

yeh cool. HE .. LET...HIS...DAD...DIE. Unnecessarily.
Religions ending, mass panic, media...versus your dad dying right in front of you, that you could prevent.

I know what you're saying, and i know they really tried hard to justify it...But seriously, its not justifiable. Heroes save their dads from tornadoes, the rest of the world can piss off and deal with it.

One day i got a phonecall that my dad had collapsed. I arrived home (getting a lift from a total stranger a few blocks away) to find paramedics working on my dad, and my mum in shock. After the longest 3 minutes of my life, they walked out and pronounced him dead.

In that three minutes, i would have saved him from three thousand tornadoes if i could. There is literally nothing else going through your head except wishing he's ok.

That's why the scene just doesn't jibe with me. He's a young farm boy seeing his dad about to die. He has super speed, he should have saved him and worry about the consequences later, cus that's what people do for those they care about.

But like i said, i GET how they dress it up, and they try to bludgeon into you the supposed reasons why. I just don't think it holds up.

Wyleejay - you've got it all backwards. Bruce Ways is Batman. Through and through. He bacame batman the second his parents were killed in that alley. The man known to the public as Bruce Wayne is just a means to an end...

...similarly in kill bill, bill was talking about clark's public identity. Superman dresses as clark kent to hide among us. That is his costume. Whether he's called clark, kal-el or supermen it is the hero that is the true identity. The reporter is the disquise.

I watched MoS in the theaters twice, and after watching it again on Blu Ray, I liked it even more. The bottom line is, a majority of the viewers weren't prepared to see Superman in this light. There was also a lot of subplots and non-stop action going on in the movie, with almost zero comic relief. Not that it was a bad thing, but I'm sure that definitely overwhelmed a lot of viewers; especially the ones who walked in the theaters expecting a Christopher Reeve Superman. I wasn't sure at first, but this is definitely the CBM movie of the year for me. Compared to Nolan's Batman trilogy, I literally felt less depressed with the story, and a LOT more satisfied with the action walking out of the theater. Effective movies evoke strong emotions from the viewer; positive or negative. This film did just that. I can't wait for the sequel.

@Moondoggy. I see what your saying. Its just that Bruce wayne has been that way since he was a kid. So that's his real personality. Clark grew up one way and then changed his persona and its hard to tell sometimes. Its even harder to explain. When Bruce is talking to Alfred, that's the real Bruce. When is Clark the real Clark now? See, that's what I'm trying to explain. In Man of Steel, Clark acted like himself he entire movie. So what happens in the next one? Fake Clark and boy scout Superman? Neither will feel like the Clark from the first film. Like I said I didn't hate the movie. It just wasn't my favorite.

By the way anyone else realize that Zod ditched his armor on that rooftop. I bet Lex finds it and turns it into his power armor.

The Man of Steel does kind of feel like a DC animated movie. The action and characters feel like cartoon characters but that is what I loved about it. It felt the most like Superman than any other movie in the past.

A lot of people complain about Clark letting Jonathan die but there is more going on in that scene that just that one element. Clark isn't just worried about who will see him, he is also worried about his mother and the other peoples safety which is also part of Jonathan's concern as well. He tells Clark to go and stay with his mother.

Now all that being said, it isn't my favorite scene in the movie and it isn't the way I would have liked to see the scene play out but I don't think it is nearly as bad as some people make it sound.

MoS was just too much, too soon for a lot of people. I just wanted Superman to throw a punch and to stop being such a [frick]ing self-righteous pussy. With my juvenile expectations, this movie surely delivered. It actually felt like Batman Begins Light, but with the action of Nolan's entire trilogy, the Avengers, and Thor combined. Superhuman beings beating the shit out of each other, I'm down.

Half of you have no idea what you're talking about with your writing gripes. No film is perfect so stop holding them to those standards. Man of Steel is very good, and is actually written pretty well. If you watch closely there are a lot of subtleties in the story that I'm sure many of you did not pick up on.
