The DCU recently found its Superman and Lois Lane in David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, an exciting development for the newly launched DC Studios.
We'll first meet these rebooted versions of the characters in 2025's Superman: Legacy, but a recent social media post from writer, director, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has sent fans into something of a frenzy. And, as you've probably guessed, it's all to do with the Man of Steel's costume.
Over on Twitter alternative Bluesky, Gunn shared a seemingly random image of Superman from the Fleischer cartoons. He's previously suggested that not everything he posts online should be taken as a clue or tease, but there are those who now believe this is the suit we'll see Corenswet's Kal-El wear.
The Man of Tomorrow needs a fresh start on screen, and this would be a bold way to differentiate the new Superman from what's come before.
It is, however, a look we've already seen referenced in an early episode of Superman & Lois, so there's always a chance Gunn is simply a fan of the cartoon or somehow inspired by it another way. A big budget take on this design could be something really special, that's for sure.
For those of you who might not know, these cartoons were released as a series of 17 shorts between 1941 and 1943. They played in theaters and, for many people at the time, this was their first exposure to the superhero known as "Superman."
There are those on social media who would like Corenswet to wear a carbon copy of Henry Cavill's Superman suit, but that's weird on about twenty different levels. This is a new Clark Kent and, if Gunn has many anything clear, it's that he's putting his own spin on the character and DCU.
"Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas," reads the movie's synopsis. "He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned."
Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.
