Following weeks of rumor and speculation, we got word that Superman: Legacy director James Gunn has chosen David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan to play Clark Kent and Lois Lane in his upcoming DCU reboot.
Corenswet has yet to comment on his casting, but EW has now shared an interview from 2019 in which the then 26-year-old actor admitted to realizing that he does share a physical resemblance to Henry Cavill, and shared his hope and ambition to one day portray a more "optimistic" interpretation of the iconic DC Comics hero.
“It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me. But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman. I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman]. I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic.”
Corenswet does look quite a bit like the previous big-screen Man of Steel, but the resemblance is not something Gunn has a problem with, according to Above the Line's report on the castings.
Gunn has also confirmed that Legacy will be a lighter (though not overly comedic) take on Supes, which will give Corenswet the opportunity to portray the more upbeat version of the character he's talked about.
Corenswet has only appeared in a handful of TV and movie projects (his biggest role was in Ti West's recent X prequel, Pearl) up to this point, but he has actually been fan-cast as Superman for a while, and already has quite a bit of support behind him.
