SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn On Recent Casting Reports: "There's Things That Are Completely False"

Superman: Legacy director James Gunn has addressed a recent report that claimed he's narrowed down his search for Clark Kent and Lois Lane to six actors, and it sounds like it's only partially accurate.

A recent report claimed that the extensive search to find the leads of Superman: Legacy may finally be coming to an end, with the first round of in-person screen tests for Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane expected to take place on Father's Day weekend or the Monday or Tuesday after.

According to Deadline, Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet and Tom Brittney are in contention for Superman, while either Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan or Phoebe Dynevor will end up playing Lois.

During an appearance on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast, writer/director James Gunn was asked for an update, and while it sounds like some of the above names are indeed in the running, the filmmaker made it clear that there is also some inaccurate information doing the rounds.

"There's things in there that are completely false, but I can’t go out there and say, 'Oh this isn’t true, and this isn’t true' without going through everything," he explained. "And by the way, it's not the audience's — at this point, I don’t think it’s the business of anyone who is screen-testing for a role. That is a very private thing. "Journalists have to do what they have to do. That’s their job. They’re trying to get hits."

Gunn did confirm that they are "narrowing down" the contenders, but are "not done yet."

"They find out some things from agencies, but here’s the problem — is that they find out some things from agencies that might be true," he continued. "They find out other things from agencies, which are agencies pushing their clients and trying to pump it up, like 'I think my client is testing! There’s a lot of nonsense that comes out of it and that’s difficult because there’s people out there that are supposedly testing that aren’t, and that must be difficult for them as people."

"And there’s other people that might be testing… and I think it’s a private thing between me and them."

It must be frustrating for Gunn, but as a fan himself, we're sure he understands why there's always going to be so much interest in such a massive casting announcement.

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters in 2025.

Didn’t he say he wasn’t going to spend time debunking shit anymore?

Or was that just for Twitter Rumors and Fake News?

@MahN166A

He's on a podcast and isn't really going into specifics - just explains how certain names get thrown in the mix.

@MahN166A - It's no secret Gunn is an attention whore. Any chance he gets to get a word in, he'll jump on it.

Maybe it's just me but I have no excitement for this movie. Granted Guardians 3 was awesome and I believe James Gunn will deliver. But WB has burned me out as a fan and the constant back and forth with which continuity/films they want to follow or retcon is just too much. At this point I would prefer standalone entries if it's too complicated to do a shared universe.

I think Tom Brittney is a real candidate.

I can wait to see who is cast. Gunn makes good movies, my only issue is his breaking from the comic books. With Drax and Adam Warlock not being from Earth in his movies, I am just hoping Superman is from Krypton.

@GarthRanzz - changing c-list character origins is more passable than changing a top 3 most popular hero

It’ll be fine

James Gunn is a talented writer and director, and he has proved it time and time again.

However, I think the concept of a shared DC cinematic universe is tarnished beyond repair in its current state.

Now, I haven't seen The Flash, but unless it outright resets the universe, I think releasing it in theaters was a misstep. Not in terms of making money off of it, but of establishing the DCU "brand" for audiences long term. Sure, Gunn announced a new slate of movies with new continuity, but we're still getting DCEU releases like The Flash and Aquaman 2, and presumably Blue Beetle.

I get that a lot of money was spent on producing these movies, but maybe it's just time to bite the bullet and release them directly to streaming under an "Elseworlds" banner (or do like an exclusive DCEU box set with those movies included). Save the hundreds of millions on marketing and focus on beefing up the hype for the new Superman film.

Maybe you lose some money on Aquaman, but if you keep churning out these mediocre superhero films while also promising the "good" ones are coming eventually, people will lose faith and you won't have as big of an audience come Superman: Legacy.

I know for me, I'm caring less and less, to the point where I wonder if a shared DC cinematic universe is even feasible anymore.

That said, I'm all in for The Batman and Joker movies.
