SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Reveals Key Creative Decision For Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor

Superman: Legacy director and DC Studios boss James Gunn has confirmed that at least one aspect of Lex Luthor's appearance from the comics will be present in the reboot...and it's sure to make fans happy.

After weeks of speculation, it was finally confirmed yesterday that Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. The actor is thought to be among those who auditioned to play the Man of Steel, but it seems James Gunn thought he'd be a better fit for one of the DCU's greatest villains rather than its brightest hero.

The filmmaker and DC Studios co-CEO recently answered a series of fan questions on Threads and was asked whether Hoult's Luthor will be bald. You might think that happening is guaranteed, though the character's portrayal in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice saw him with a full head of hair until the final few minutes.

Asked "are you going make him bald," Gunn replied, "ofc [of course]." Someone else shared fan art of Lex looking at his classic robotic costume from the comics, though the Superman: Legacy helmer wasn't giving much away when he simply replied, "That’s cool."

Gunn was also asked why it's taken this long to announce Hoult's casting when the news broke in the trade weeks ago. "It was a leak," he admits. "I don’t know who leaked it. It’s fine. But you never know when something can go wrong, so I didn’t want to announce it."

In yesterday's announcement, Gunn said: "Yes, finally I can answer, [Nicholas Hoult] is Lex Luthor in [Superman: Legacy] and I couldn’t be happier. We went out to dinner last night to celebrate [and] discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget."

"'But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true' Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain."

On the page, Luthor's iconic bald appearance is typically attributed to various origins. One common explanation is that Luthor lost his hair due to a scientific accident involving an invention gone wrong, though it's often been portrayed as a result of an experiment or encounter with Kryptonite, Superman's weakness.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. Other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Kurt Russell no longer appears to be in the running for Jor-El and there's no word on Ma and Pa Kent or whether they're even alive in this iteration of Clark Kent's story. Brainiac, meanwhile, is expected to serve as the reboot's big bad. With production set to begin early next year, we're hoping the final few cast members will be revealed in the weeks ahead.

Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Seriously think Hoult is capable of giving us the best live action portrayal of Luthor since Smallville. The guy can has some damn good range as an actor.

Cool!!.

He also said that he wanted Lex & Clark to be contemporaries in age which makes me think he’s going with the childhood friends angle from Birthright which hasn’t been done on the big screen…

Plus , I think that version of Lex might give insight into how Hoult’s Lex will be too such as more focus on his scientific genius aswell as possibly being a self made man then coming from generational wealth.

This feels like a bit of a miscast to me. There is nothing remotely menacing about Hoult. He should be the current iteration of Hank McCoy in the MCU going forward. It is a bit telling that Marvel has not asked him to reprise the role.

@Forthas - thank god, he was awful as Beast IMO. But as Lex, I kinda like it that he doesn't seem a menace, because that way he can be as evil as he wants

Why cant the dude just be bald. Why does his baldness has to be a reason? Why cant he just be like "You know what...I'ma just chop it all off. Clean shaven. Slick boy." Why does the baldness have to have an origin. JUST BE BALD!

I’m still happy with Corenswet and Brosnahan’s casting, but all of the other casting (for me) is meh. Just bland and boring as a bowl of cold oatmeal. I’m excited about none of the titles they are rolling out first, nor any of the other characters they are trying to set up. Unenthused.

I think Hoult is a very good actor, but I don't think he has that innate and natural persuasive charisma or charm that the billionaire Lex Luthor would have. Just like Eisenberg didn't have it. Someone like Fassbender has it, for comparison.

But I hope I'm proven wrong.

@MadThanos - So he would be good as the Joker?

@elgaz -

"natural persuasive charisma or charm that the billionaire Lex Luthor would have. Just like Eisenberg didn't have it. Someone like Fassbender has it"

You lost me with Fassbender.

What a ridiculous comparison.

Fassbender exudes a dark, menacing presence that would make the character's motivations obvious for everyone to see.

Such silly fan-casting.

@Beer85 - well, there are several types of psychological conditions. Not just the Joker kind.

The more I think about it, the more I like this casting. You want someone who is handsome... But not as handsome as Superman you want someone who is charming, but not as charming as Superman. He wants someone who can fake being nice, but also can reveal himself to be quite evil when he lets his guard down. This might be fantastic casting after all

"Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget."

I hope not. I know myself fairly well and if it's not a version like Smallville's or the animated universe I'll be hard-pressed to like it. Tough as nails businessman who commands a room with their presence and stature is something I don't see in Hoult at all. Imagine him standing next to Netflix's DD Kingpin and trying to sound and look imposing. I just don't see it.

@WarMonkey - I’m sure they’ll take heavy inspiration for those adaptations, Gunn is on record as saying Smallville’s Lex is the GOAT.

Yep. Luthor will be giving Lois the sneaky pete & trying to cuck super boy scout while he's off interacting with the other 432 characters in this movie.

Oh Lexy, you're so sexy.

"You’re a very weird dude"

Apparently, The PTA, all mall cops, the zoo monkeys, & the dog catcher agree with you.

I'm pretty sure they're all just jealous.

I find it funny he calls trades like Deadline and such "leaks" when they end up being mostly correct.

I am sure Nicholas Hoult will bring to life a cool Lex Luthor for the movies.
