Though it may seem like a trivial thing to some, many Superman fans are still very passionate about the Man of Tomorrow's undies!
The debate about whether the legendary DC Comics hero should/shouldn't wear his classic red trunks on the outside of his costume always resurfaces whenever a new live-action movie is in the works, and James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU slate announcement reignited the discussion.
Christopher Reeve wore the trunks in Richard Donner's movies, and Brandon Routh followed suit in Superman Returns. Then, back in 2011, DC Comics launched the "New 52," and introduced a new take on the Man of Steel whose costume was notably sans shorts.
Henry Cavill then ditched the trunks for Man of Steel in 2013, and most fans seemed happy enough with the change - but there are still those who'd like to see the legendary hero return to his original look.
Gunn has previously polled fans to see where they land on the trunks debate (though he made it clear that the results wouldn't influence his decision), and has now weighed in on Threads. Though he doesn't actually reveal whether David Corenswet will wear the trunks in Superman: Legacy, the filmmaker's feelings on the iconic costume, in general, are interesting.
If we had to guess, we'd say this latest take on Supes will not be sporting the red trunks, though we can't imagine Gunn straying too far from the classic costume in most respects.
What do you think? Do you feel it's even that important one way or the other? Drop us a comment down below.
Superman: Legacy will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, along with Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.
More recently, Sara Sampaio signed on to play Lex's assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, and Skyler Gisondo has been cast as Jimmy Olsen.
Members of the anti-hero team The Authority will also appear, and María Gabriela de Faría (Animal Control) has been cast as Angela Spica/The Engineer.
Supergirl is also rumored to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie, but that's yet to be confirmed.
We're still not sure exactly how these other superheroes will factor into the story, but Gunn has previously revealed that Superman's dual-life as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel will be explored in the film, suggesting that these characters will be his "super friends." Whether they'll be part of an actual team or not remains to be seen.
“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
Production is scheduled to get underway early next year.
