DC Films is no more, and DC Studios now looks set to truly change the hierarchy of the DC Universe. James Gunn and Peter Safran don't start working until November 1, but you have to believe they're already plotting this franchise's future; the question is, will Superman be at the forefront of their plans?
While Henry Cavill was brought back into the fold prior to Gunn and Safran's hiring, it sounds like a new Superman movie remains a priority for Warner Bros. Discovery.
In their piece on the future of DC Studios, Variety notes that, "a Chuck Roven-produced Superman sequel [is] currently soliciting pitches from writers." That lines up with previous reports about a Man of Steel follow-up being a priority for the new regime, and likely means it will start taking shape sooner rather than later.
While there have been rumblings that Mission: Impossible - Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie might be a contender, speculation is now running rampant that Gunn could be in the mix. We've previously heard that he was offered a Superman project prior to helming The Suicide Squad, and he will continue writing and directing projects even in this executive role.
Whether it's stepping behind the camera to direct or just penning the screenplay, we'd be shocked if Gunn doesn't end up being involved with this movie in some way. That could be the fresh start the Man of Tomorrow so desperately needs, though we do expect Dwayne Johnson to remain hands-on.
After all, he was instrumental in Cavill coming back to this role, and sent out the following Tweet in response to the British actor confirming he has officially returned as the DCU's Superman.
