Zack Snyder On The Backlash Of Directing MAN OF STEEL And How His Film Relates To WATCHMEN

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world’s beacon of hope – Superman.

During a nice little interview in the latest issue of Empire magazine, 300, Watchmen, and Man of Steel director Zack Snyder touched up upon many subjects that we fans have been curious about for a while. When it was first heard that he would helm the next Supes film, the reaction was pretty mixed to positive. When asked about the negativity in that feedback, Snyder said: "For me it is like, ‘Whatever.’ I don’t know what they really want, so it is impossible to really take that with anything but a grain of salt. Otherwise you would do nothing. They want the underwear! ‘Do you really?" Snyder then continued to discuss the film and how it sort of 'relates' to his last CBM, Watchmen. "I was really glad I could do it in that order. The irony of Superman is that it is not ironic. The irony of Watchmen is that the whole thing is ironic."

Man of Steel Stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, and Michael Shannon. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and will soar into theaters on June 14th, 2013.

Man of Steel is my most anticipated cbmovie this year, hands down! I believe Snyder is a perfect match for the job. Watchmen is one of my favorite CBMovies ever. WB/DC needs to get Bruce Timm onto this universe and work his magic!!

I just hope DC's plan isn't to have Snyder do all their films from now on.

"Ok, Zack. Now that you're done with Justice League, we want you to direct the Wonder Woman spin-off. What? No, we need WW before a Man of Steel sequel. But then also Batman. Do Batman after WW."

I was super stoked when he was announced and I knew supes was in good hands, the guys got an eye for detail, and visuals even tho sucker punch sucked balls, it was still pretty to look at, so either way, we'll end up with a beautiful looking movie!

my hate doesnt have anything to do with the director.
usually whatever is bad in regards to DC movies is WBs fault.

Like the thing that bothers me is how WB is so caught up with dated market research that they are practically ashamed to use their characters names.

"the Hood" "Arrow" "the Blurr". "The Dark Knight" or "The Man of Steel" is at least related but a result of the same market research.

they are so scared, that they did that thing in the MOS trailer that masks the name Superman when Lois says it.

WB: its okay, we accept the names. marvel movies have proven we will accept names like IRON MAN, if the end product is good.

i want this movie to be great, because i LOVE DC, but damn WB makes it an uphill battle

Watchmen was amazing... I was anticipating that movie so much that I bought the motion comic (yeah I'm lazy so what) and watched all 6 hours in two nights. Then when the movie came out I saw it twice in the theaters. So what if he changed the ending. I thought it was just as effective, if not more... And seriously, there is no way to make a bioengineered squid look as beautiful as the rest of the movie does.

His visual style is just so much better than almost anyone in movies today. Lets hope that carries over to Man of Steel.

Ive loved Snyder since I first saw 300 and then realised he'd previously directed Dawn of the dead which I enjoyed a great deal. The guy has a wonderful flare for comic book violence and comic book visuals, he makes his characters and films in general look cool and he makes them do cool things, this is why I have such a beef with so many other CBM directors and its the reason Im not a huge fan of Marvels films they just dont have the stylistic talent to live up to Snyder or Nolan or Del Toro or Rodriguez. Snyders weakness in the past has been with the subtler more intellectual parts of cinema, this is why Him and Nolan are such a wonderful combination.

I like Whedon as a person and I recognise he did a good job working out a way to get that many characters to work on screen, but as with all Marvels efforts it didnt look good enough and the set pieces/violence just wasnt up to scratch and to me these are the two most basic aspects of great CBMs.

Watchmen was the greatest superhero comic book adaptation to date. 300 was a near on perfect adaptation of the comic and celebration of Frank Millers artistic style. Dawn of the Dead was one of the few zombie movies worth sitting through because it sidelined the traditional idea of slow foot-shuffling zombies like Walking Stupid Dead. And even Suckerpunch in all its mess of a narrative, still managed to deliver an entertaining spectacle worthy of seeing at least once.

..I have zero worries for Man of Steel being anything short of superb!

I hated Watchmen. And I have disagreed with fanboys who think it was a smart or faithful adaption of Moore and Gibbon's classic comic.

Snyder's great accomplishment has always been to use the comic movie aesthetic Richard Rodriguez pioneered in Sin City for other comics.

Nope, it wasn't. Too cheesy and simplistic. Though I don't entirely blame him. He did a lot of things well in terms of visualization. The three hour movie format makes it near impossible to properly capture so dense of a work. They should have gone with a 12 part miniseries.
