BOX OFFICE: THE LONE RANGER Fails To Make An Impact On Independence Day With $9.7M

After taking only $9.6 million on its opening day in North America on Wednesday, the Disney remake of the classic television series had a rise of only 1% on the July 4th celebrations and now looks set for a very disappointing five-day total. Read on for details!

The Fourth of July celebrations always mean that ticket sales are a little slower than usual as people enjoy the holiday, but it now seems clear that The Lone Ranger is set to be a big box office disappointment for Disney. A 'B+' CinemaScore has done little to help the Gore Verbinski helmed and Jerry Bruckheimer produced remake, especially as it faces such stiff competition from Despicable Me 2. After earning $9.6 million on Wednesday, The Lone Ranger reportedly had only a 1% increase to take a paltry $9.7 million yesterday. While today and the weekend will be its biggest test, analysts have now revised their predictions for the five-day total right down to around $40 million. That's considerably less than Disney's initial lowball projection of $65+ million. With a rumoured budget of anywhere between $215 - 250 million, it seems unlikely that The Lone Ranger will be able to reclaim anywhere near that unless it seriously overperforms internationally. This will be the second high profile flop for Disney after last year's John Carter also proved to be a disaster.

"The Lone Ranger" is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

STARRING:

Armie Hammer as John Reid, the Lone Ranger
Johnny Depp as Tonto
William Fichtner as Butch Cavendish
Ruth Wilson as Rebecca Reid
James Badge Dale as Dan Reid
Tom Wilkinson as Latham Cole
Barry Pepper as Captain Jay Fuller

Mason Cook as Will

Man of Steel has dropped to #7 and made $3 million yesterday. No word on what it should reach by the end of the weekend just yet, but should have more details on that later today or early tomorrow!

It's a shame, even though it doesn't look like a film I'd enjoy, I wanted it to do well because of Armie Hammer, this is the first movie where he's been the star and I wanted it to do atleast reasonably well for him.

The budget for this was very very overwhelming, considering Western's aren't too mainstream anymore and are arguably aimed at a higher age market.

Poor Armie :(

I'm not sure why studios want to release movies on July 4th, especially in the U.S., where it's a national holiday (National Michael Bay Impersonation Day *BAM! BOOM! SPLOSIONS!!!!!*).

Not even Depp is gonna be able to save Disney this time.

The Lone Ranger just seems like an odd choice to make a summer blockbuster movie out of. I get the feeling that perhaps if this movie was released later this year like fall or winter it would prolly do a lot better...idk, I was never excited for this anyways

Yeah this is hardly a surprise Disney's attempt at marketing was bad, but there was also a lot of stuff out that really overshadowed this movie. Plus it opened against a sequel to a popular kids movie.

Wow that's sad. Now i'm even more curious to actually watch the film for myself as to see how bad it is.

Is the film really horrible though or is it because it's racially offensive, or perhaps is it just dry, dull and boring?

I went to see Desi Me 2 yesterday with the family and I was talking to the manager and he said ticket sales were awful for Lone Ranger. Yeah I think they should have held off and showed it this fall if you ask me.

All Disney has to do is put out a Marvel or Pixar or Star Wars film and they will get the money back they lost.

Won't see me shred a tear for them.

There is much more time left for this film to earn some money.
The fact is since I have no financial stake in Hollywood productions the money matters little to me.
Critics & others commenting on films don't matter either.

I watch what I want & decide for myself. Everyone should do that.
John Carter was a good movie,it deserved to have been more successful.
By comparison,Transformers movies are a damn mess yet made big money at the box office.

I will see The Lone Ranger & judge it based on its merits & not the money factor.

Had higher hopes on The Lone Ranger

That was the problem with 'Cowboys & Aliens' which I thought was not that great of a movie.

Cowboys & Aliens results:

Production Budget: $163,000,000
Domestic Box Office $100,240,551
International Box Office $75,669,764
Worldwide Box Office $175,910,315

They were insane to release this even close to Despicable Me 2.
It's like a suicide move.

Disney fire your marketing department. Oz had the ability to make at least £600 mil, if you had sorted the marketing out, and didnt reveal the twist when casting was announced, then try and do a 180 with the Which Witch is Which campgain, when we knew it was Mila. The same happening here, I live in Northern Ireland we've barely had any promotion for this anywhere?

What dumb mother[frick]er decided to give a western film out of all types of films a $250M budget, sheer stupidity. Movie should have been half of that.
Ocelot
Ocelot - 7/5/2013, 6:05 AM
Western's haven't been relevant since the 80's, when you do a Western film, you dont ever do it with a mega budget cough cough Wild Wild West and Cowboys and Aliens but instead on a smaller budget like True Grit. Big budget westerns just dont do well.
