BOX OFFICE: THE LONE RANGER Fails To Make An Impact On Independence Day With $9.7M
After taking only $9.6 million on its opening day in North America on Wednesday, the Disney remake of the classic television series had a rise of only 1% on the July 4th celebrations and now looks set for a very disappointing five-day total. Read on for details!
The Fourth of July celebrations always mean that ticket sales are a little slower than usual as people enjoy the holiday, but it now seems clear that The Lone Ranger is set to be a big box office disappointment for Disney. A 'B+' CinemaScore has done little to help the Gore Verbinski helmed and Jerry Bruckheimer produced remake, especially as it faces such stiff competition from Despicable Me 2. After earning $9.6 million on Wednesday, The Lone Ranger reportedly had only a 1% increase to take a paltry $9.7 million yesterday. While today and the weekend will be its biggest test, analysts have now revised their predictions for the five-day total right down to around $40 million. That's considerably less than Disney's initial lowball projection of $65+ million. With a rumoured budget of anywhere between $215 - 250 million, it seems unlikely that The Lone Ranger will be able to reclaim anywhere near that unless it seriously overperforms internationally. This will be the second high profile flop for Disney after last year's John Carter also proved to be a disaster.
"The Lone Ranger" is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.
