Donald Blake Will NOT Be In Thor?

Donald Blake Will NOT Be In Thor?

No solid confirmation yet, but AICN says there will be no Blake in Thor(thank Thunder God!)!

After seeing this in todays Variety..

"Thor, scripted by Mark Protosevich, Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller, centers on a partly disabled med student who discovers his Norse god alter ego, the hammer-swinging Thor."

And feeling it had contradicted a lot of what we have all heard about the direction the movie is going in so far, AICN contacted a...

"100% tested and solid source, someone intimately familiar with the movie Kenneth Branagh is making, and he or she tells AICN Donald Blake is definitely NOT in the movie."

Thats all I have so far I'm afraid. If their source is as solid as they claim it doesn't look good for Thor's human alter ego. And I for one am delighted. Call me a blasphemer id you like, I know its a staple of the classic comics. But I wasn't looking forward to a "This is a job for Thor" scenario with a flash of light..different actor! No thanks.

Indeed. It's a mystery.

However who is it that's going to woo our maude, miss Foster? hmmmmmm?
StephenStrange

See how that works? Jane Foster + Don Blake = the classic set up.

I'm ok with that as long as they don't make the transformation stupid and cheesy via Mr. mark Cassidy's very illustrious descriptions of the past. ;)

@Darthmulder: Are you going through an identity crisis? I have the same questions regarding the casting of Portman and Denning. Still excited for the movie though! I've heard reports that Blake will be at the end of the movie.

I'm confused too. What's the point of bringing Jane Foster in if they aren't using Blake?

Thank Asgard for this news! I've never understood the need for Donald Blake - JMS has clarified it a little in his recent run on the character but Thor doesnt need a secret ID and it would probably just confuse the hell out of people in a cinema!

Im guessing they're using Jane Foster to bridge the gap between Asgard and Thor...I do actually like Don Blake but he just seems like a pointless character (as is Bob Reynolds with the Sentry - even though the Sentry himself is pretty pointless, lol!)

I hope they dont go the Ultimate route though of making the character a hippie, former mental patient with Jane Foster as one of his groupies! Ultimate Thor was actually the only character I wasnt a fan of in the series even though the idea was an interesting one!

DarthMulder: What happenned to the new user ID?

MarkCassidy - 11/25/2009, 1:39 PM
I'm pretty sure that they will just have Thor banished to Earth as himself, maybe with some memory loss to allow him to get close to Foster..or he will pretend to be a human called Donald Blake, just not actually BE him. We still get the alter ego, but no big Shazam style transformation..he just grabs his hammer and goes to work:)

ultimate thor will be best!
but true...what kind of role will jane foster have if there is no blake??
maybe theyre gonna combine the two different versions of classic and ultimate. maybe jane foster will be his nurse or something when (ultimate) thor is instutionalized after his breakdown, and then they develop a relationship? or something like that, mixing the two diferent universes together...?

That's actually DAMN AMAZING!!! I don't want Donald Blake anywhere NEAR that film!!! He'd be better suited for a sequel IF they decided to include him. Thor does not nor ever needs Donald! He'd make things campy. Jane can be Thor's Jane instead of Donald's Jane like in Tarzan. The King of the jungle with the city girl only this time it's the God of Thunder. It fits. No campy transformation!
Ryden
Ryden - 11/25/2009, 1:44 PM
@Ror- I completley agree, that would be better than using a different actor. I would actually hate the thought of a different actor playing Blake if they do decide to add him in (like in a sequel or something) if Clark Kent can pull it off with a pair of glasses I'm sure Thor can do the same thing.

@Duhdaduh- NononononononononononononoNO Ultimate Thor!! I can't stand him. He's such a silly character, classic Thor!!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 11/25/2009, 1:45 PM
That would work too. I love Ultimate Thor. They should really take elements from him for the Earthbound story. Asagrdian setting Thor can be classic all the way pretty much.
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 11/25/2009, 1:48 PM
That would be totally cool, except it does kind of contradict the premise that there will be "no" Don Blake.

Here's my honest opinion: I'm cool either way. I prefer classic Thor but the movie can get by and be epic without a Don Blake.

BUT Thor would need some kind of disguise or a cover story for when he isn't being Thor.
I really believe that if they even bother to give him some time on Earth and a girlfriend, then walking around with long blonde hair, dressed as a Norse God would just not work.

That is the reason for a Don Blake. Because Thor as he is is VERY recognizeable.

Hey, do the Ninja Turtles have alter egos? No. April is still there though. Jane can still be Thor's link to humanity! He can wear street clothes, he doesn't have to keep his God Garments ;P

Jerzey: Oh, thanks. I looked at the article, and that sounds like a pretty good plot to me, without including Blake. So, all in all, I am indifferent to this news.
JonF
JonF - 11/25/2009, 2:01 PM
joshw24 - Blake was a fictional human identity that Odin created so that Thor would learn humility whilst he served an open-ended sentence to live amongst mortals! He isn't an actual person!

Blake may be introduced at the end of the film, which could segue nicely into the Avengers film.

Ror - They tried that approach with the Sigurd Jarlson identity(which was a wink to Superman's Clark Kent identity)! It didn't work nearly as well!

As long as they roll with CLASSIC THOR this movie will be EPIC!

Everybody, let me translate this article for you:

"Ultimate Thor fans want the movie to be Ultimate Thor."
Which includes of course the author and the source quoted.

This is something we hear all the time. It's nothing new.

Thank goodness there are plenty of people that feel differently.

thunderforce - 11/25/2009, 2:21 PM
Well i think he would need some kind of alter ego because really there would be like a million groupies following the guy everywhere if he said he was a god and could prove it . Shoot it would probably start a whole new religion . Also it would suck if you had to stay holed up in the avenger mansion forever.

@LEEE777

i bet its going to have Classic Thor and Ultimate Thor mixed together on film.

Ryden
Ryden - 11/25/2009, 2:26 PM
If we have Ultimate Thor the movie is gonna blow because, for starters, Ultimate Thor is a crappy crappy crappy character and secondly he doesn't translate well to the big screen AT ALL, Classic Thor is a bit more adaptable. Remember they're making THE AVENGERS not the Ultimates people.

It was already said months ago that Donald Blake wouldn't be in it.It was said by the president of marvel himself, Kevin Feige.

I could be wrong, but doesn't it appear that they are well aimed at the Ultimates version of the Avengers? I mean the black version of Fury is a hell of a sign. I happen to love the Ultimate version of Nick Fury much better then the original. The original Fury is a very dislikable character, Ultimate Fury personifies the word cool.

JonF: They've become two seperate people - Blake has his own personality and life - hell, he was still around even after Thor's death! The whole sharing a body thing makes no sense - why does Thor need a human disguise!? Surely after all these years he's learnt some humility, lol!

i have a feeling that once this movie comes out there is going to be a great divide between those who loved and hated the movie... it will be pretty damn close to 50% loved it and 50% hated it; give or take very little for the very few that thought it was just okay.

me? i'm not holding my breath on anything. don't want to build it up and be really let down; and i don't want to bury it in negativity and go into it with a closed mind. i do, however have a gut feeling it will be quite good... just not getting my hopes up.

Okay Ryden, please explain to me how a Shakespeare quoting , winged helmeted Asgardian flying around with a Hammer up his ass translates to screen better than a man who everyone believes is a nut, but may or may not be a God called Thor? Ultimate Thor kicks ass. But as i said, a mix is needed.

And sorry to burst your bubble, but clearly they are making..A MOVIE. Not The Ultimates, not the classics.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/25/2009, 4:02 PM
i agree ror. donald blake doesn't need to be in this. they could just have thor either get stranded in our realm, or make him capable of crossing over at will...either way, he's not needed. and with all the supporting cast already lined up, it would be tough to make a good story with him.

also, does anyone worry about the size of this cast??? all these characters are pretty important to the thor mythos, i don't see HOW they will be able to spend sufficient time on everyone to flesh out their characters. i can't wait for this movie, but i fear for it!
