Well, Marvel have officially gone outside the box in their choice to replace Kenneth Branagh on Thor 2 as Monster director Patty Jenkins signs on.

Here is the press release in full..

Marvel Studios announced today that Patty Jenkins will direct THOR 2, which will be released in theatres on Friday, November 15, 2013. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will return to star in the film along with Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce the sequel to this summer’s blockbuster THOR, which has grossed over $448 million worldwide to date.

Patty Jenkins previously directed MONSTER starring Charlize Theron, who won an Academy Award® for her performance in the film. Jenkins, who received an Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of AMC’s acclaimed series The Killing, has also directed episodes of Entourage and Arrested Development. Most recently, she directed “Pearl,” one of the five short films that comprise Lifetime’s original movie FIVE.

In addition to THOR 2, Marvel Studios is currently scheduled to release MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012, and IRON MAN 3 which is slated for release on May 3, 2013.

Jenkins is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Alan Wertheimer

Fans seemed to have a bit of a mixed reaction when the rumor of Jenkins' involvement hit. Monster is her biggest movie by far and certainly wouldn't seem to qualify her to direct a big action orientated blockbuster. But if you remember some said the same thing, or similar anyway, about Branagh! I think it shows that Marvel are prepared to explore all options and not just hire someone who can blow shit up well. I look forward to seeing what Jenkins brings to the table. What do you guys think?

Well this is good, nice to see Marvel thinking outside of the box, Now I guess we'll have to wait and see if she can handle the action, the dramatic beat shouldn't be hard for her to handle.

I see no problems here.

Marvel will give her a strict guideline. Her filming style is solid.

Jon Favreau, directed Made, Elf, and Zathura...
Louis Leterrier, directed The Transporter 1&2, Unleashed, and even Clash of the Titans...
Kenneth Branagh, directed... tons of movies. lol
Joe Johnston, directed Honey I Shrunk The Kids, The Rocketeer, Jumanji, October Sky, Jurassic Park III, Hidalgo, and The Wolfman...

Now having to had first heard these directors being chosen for these movies, I had my doubts. But those doubts were proven wrong. I underestimated their directing abilities and for that I can surely trust Marvel giving her the director's chair for this sequel.
