SPOILERS: THOR: RAGNAROK Director Taika Waititi Explains Why Hobo Odin Was Cut In Reshoots

Thor: Ragnarok set photos revealed that Anthony Hopkins' Odin will be a hobo in the threequel but that was cut from the movie during reshoots and director Taika Waititi has now explained why that is...

As you'll already know from the trailers for Thor: Ragnarok, the destruction of Mjolnir was moved from a New York alleyway to a field in Norway. It's a big change and one that obviously occurred during reshoots but it's not the only alteration made; Odin - who was supposed to be portrayed as a hobo wandering the streets raving about the end of the world - no longer sets foot in the Big Apple.

In a new interview, director Taika Waititi elaborated on the change of scenery and why he felt it was necessary to change Hela's introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in such a major way.

"We wanted the scene to have more of an emotional resonance around Odin and the sons. We wanted it to be a very special moment between them, where Odin (Anthony Hopkins) acknowledges Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as his son, and the three of them [are] together, there in that moment. It’s the first time we’ve really seen them all together in the same room alone, connecting, and you just can’t f***ing do that in New York, you know? You can’t even do that in real life in New York, have an emotional connection in an alleyway, so that was a very distracting environment in the end.

"In the end we thought it’s actually better to give more weight to it, and give it the sort of time that it deserved, and give it the sort of quietness that it really deserved because everything up until then had been such a fast-paced journey. Thor was on Muspelheim, he gets up to Asgard, then suddenly they’re in New York, and [with] Doctor Strange, and then they’re in an alleyway. We just needed to chill out for a second, and have that moment, because the rest of the film basically just runs at a clip. The audiences get to relax and have some emotional connection to some of the characters. It was very important that we took it away from New York."

As for the decision to change what Odin has been up to since being banished by Loki at the end of Thor: The Dark World, it appears as if audiences at early test screenings simply didn't respond to him being an unhinged hobo in New York, hence why things had to be changed when reshoots took place.

"[Odin] was originally in New York, and people couldn’t understand why – rightly so. It just didn’t feel very authentic that Odin was wandering around New York, he’s one of the most powerful beings in the universe, and he’s wandering around New York, kind of lost. What we wanted to do, I guess, was to honour that he was a powerful king and he had taken himself to Norway, to the cliffs and was waiting this whole time, whereas before it seemed too and and too tragic that he was there, and dying in New York. I thought, what a pitiful end, you know?"

Waititi makes some good points here and while it's a shame we'll never get to see what appeared to be a very funny take on Odin, it might have ultimately been for the best. After all, there's more than enough humour in the movie as it is without making the former King of Asgard the butt of jokes too.

Why would you bother putting a spoiler tag in the headline if you are just going to spoil it in the headline anyway -_-

this would also explain why the hammer breaking went from an alley to the country in the trailers

@JoshWilding dude can you stop spoiling everything that is and isn't included in the new Thor movie? I've spent months trying to avoid spoilers on this site and now you've spoiled a potentially major detail in this movie - cheers.

@TheGoddamnPeel - Also nice that sometimes the possible spoiler is in the headline

:::SPOILERS:::

Odin was something that didn't really work for me. It was like, he just decided to die and turned into dust? what the hell?

@ODanil - Same

"I'm going to die now and turn into fairy dust, when i do Ragnarok will occur"

*turns into dust*

*Hela appears behind them*

Seems rushed as hell

@ODanil -
Yeah that part wasn't really clear, it sort of just happened, his time came, natural death, or whatever...

Wish we had a scene with him and Hela though...

@ODanil - I don't know I thought it was quite a poignant moment. The setting was definitely beautiful. It was nice how he kind of served as the emotional boost Thor needed to succeed later on. Plus Hopkins was great as always, even though he had very little screen-time.

yo, WTF!

think you can wait a goddamn week before you start making hay out of a movie half of us haven't gotten a chance to see yet. Damn!

Forget the title, i hope people are not reading the article, this spoils quite a bit.
From the opening to Hela's debut in the movie...Not to mention Dr.Strange's cameo...

@Doomsday8888 - Thats why it says spoiler in the title. So we know the article spoils the movie. In this case the spoiler is also in the title, which is a dumb move

@Doomsday8888 - The actual content of the article is fine as its behind the spoiler tag but for that to be in the headline is messed up. this seems to happened EVERY time one of these comes out here how difficult to have vague headlines

I think Hobodin could have worked if done differently, but in this case I think it is a wise decision to do it this

Seems like this film needed a quiet, tender moment to sort of steady itself; especially considering all of the rampant wildness throughout the rest of the film.

I read that Hopkins brief performance is BEAUTIFUL.

So Loki deposed Odin and sent him to Sweden before impersonating him?

@Battabing - Loki left him in New York City, but Odin eventually made his way to Norway

For the love of God.....through JUST reading your headlines I now know that Sif is not in the movie, hobo Odin got cut, the warriors 3 who were clearly NOT in promotional material from Marvel have some sort of dire fate in the movie. You're messed up that you even think this is sort of okay.

You guys are pretty uncaring about the fact that not everyone got to see the movie BEFORE the release date. Cool it with the clickbait headlines that are actually spoilers or you'll lose fans. I' really sick of it.

Can you not put [frick]ing spoilers in the goddamn headline, you twat? It's not hard to re-write the headline to still get your precious clicks.

Could you do that??

@Dotanuki - Considering that "Hobo Odin" was cut from the film, how is it still a spoiler?
