Transformers: Dark of the Moon becomes the highest grossing film of 2011 in the US so far, while Green Lantern slips from the top 10...

Deadline report that Transformers: Dark of the Moon now holds the record for being 2011's top-grossing domestic film so far. The site note that Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (which recently surpassed $1 billion worldwide) actually made the majority of its money abroad.

They add that, "I've heard from a reliable source that Michael Bay should make between $80M and $100M from Paramount's Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. And, if that's not enough to make you call Hollywood's suicide hotline, then this might be: Transformers 3 will now be the highest grossing movie of the year." So, a pretty good few weeks for Paramount AND Michael Bay then!

Unfortunately, Green Lantern has now fallen out of the Top 10. Sitting at #7 last week, and facing off against a few new releases this Friday, it isn't too much of a surprise. However, the fact it's now taking in such a small amount just three weekends in the US doesn't bode well for the chances of a sequel. With only a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, whether it will make up for this when it's released internationally come August remains to be seen.

Box Office Mojo report that it currently sits at $140,829,000 worldwide. Well under it's budget. In comparison, Thor stayed in the top 10 for 9 weeks, and X-Men: First Class for 5. Both are considered financially successful.

With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two and Captain America: The First Avenger on the way, how do you think they'll fare in the battle of the box office?

@weneedrevelation:
Green Lantern had a budget of 200 million compared to Transformers 195 million.
300 million (not confirmed) is including marketing costs...

Also, it is sad that Transformers is so succesfull, while really good movies like X-Men have it so much harder to make money...

@weneedrevelation: you are right about that, Transformers looks more expensive, the point was just don't add marketing to the budget of Green Lantern and compare it to Transformers 3 budget without marketing...

I agree with WENEED Cuz even if T3 was 195 mil and GL 200 mil, GL coulda been INSANELY impressive, atleast in terms of visuals. I honeslty was shocked that transformers cost so little for so much action and explosions and stuff.

Sucks for GL. If Bay can do that much with 195 mill, Im sure whedon can do great things with the AVENGERS budget which was 185 mill I believe.

Just f--king great.

Transformers 3 is number 1 again despite it's flaws.

Green Lantern got dramatically disrespected in a big way.

The haters and Marvelites are yucking this up.

Thor still sucked. Deal with it.

Movie goers can be a deluded lot.

I think transformers is gonna be the domestic movie king this year, but harry potter is gonna be bigger internationally. Shocker to me is Fast Five at #2, gotta admit, the only movie I liked better than it this year T3. Thor would be higher on the list if it had better action. That movie could have been epic! And correct me if I'm wrong, but did first class make even less monet that x2 and x3...?

FYI=

X-Men: First Class rebooted the mutant-superhero franchise by opening to $56 million, according to studio estimates. Whether that figure is a success or not depends on your point of view. Compared to the prior four X-Men movies, First Class attracted by far the least amount of moviegoers on opening weekend. It barely beat the original X-Men, which debuted to $54.5 million in 2000 (or $79.4 million in today’s dollars). And First Class fell far short of X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which grossed $85.6 million, $102.8 million, and $85.1 million their first weekends, respectively. Fox’s PG-13 action film also failed to match the $65.7 million debut set by fellow Marvel superhero Thor..

I for one am shocked that Josh isn't reporting an $800 million budget for Green Lantern this week. Sorry Josh, I couldn't resist.

Personally I think Warner Bros. should move on with a sequel simply because they set one up at the end of the movie, It was their plan all along, and It would be a bigger waste of their money to not follow it up. I think once it comes out on DVD and more people see it it will grow a stronger following. WB/DC needs to make sure they cater to the audience and have the sequel be more of a space epic...which in turn would probably cost more money. :0/ I just don't think they should abandon there plans because it didn't make a lot of money in theatre's when it's there fault for releasing it during such a packed month and for it to be the 3rd superhero movie released with in a 6 week span. I firmly stand by the belief that if they had released GL in April or August it would have done much better. Hell even if they waited until November to release it it would have done amazing numbers I'm sure. Warner needs to learn to not go one on one with Disney. They'll kill you.. unless you put Batman or Harry Potter up against them.

@shull and kes - well I'm a neutral fanboy because neither dc nor marvel pays my bills or even gives me free stuff, so I owe them nothing. Lol. Thor. First class and GL were all underwhelming movies this year.

Thor had GREAT acting from Hopkins, Hidleston and Elba, but was very flat on the action side...

First Class had good production and good acting from the leading 2, but again lacked good action(better than thor) and the continuity had a lot of people, even fanboys saying "wtf" and wondering exactly what the movie was...

Green Lantern's ring slinging made for the best action out of all 3, but unfortunately only made up about 10 minutes of the movie. And the rest of the movie was nothing to write home about with notably bad editing, though it wasn't as bad as critics made it out to be...

@KES, Why don't you make me shutup loser? Get a life bitch if that's the way you're gonna be. Sucks when someone insults your favorite movies and I know you're one of the loudmouths who don't know when to quit. Obviously, I'm not gonna have an intel conversation with you so I'm telling you just once to not pursue this any further.

Same goes for you teabag.
