TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT Reveals Our First Official Look At Hot Rod

While it's been known since August that Hot Rod would make his live-action debut in Transformers: The Last Knight, the first pair of trailers have opted to keep him hidden as they kept the focus on Optimus Prime and his shifting allegiances.

Well, now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly's summer movie preview, we have our first photo of the live-action Hot Rod and also have a few details on his backstory, including why he's been laying low for the past four films.

According to EW, Hot Rod is an ally of astronomer Sir Edmund Burton, played by Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins, and under his direction has been secretly serving as the protector of Laura Haddock's Viviane Wembly, while disguised as her father's 1963 Citroën DS, for the better part of her life. “It’s a rickety old thing, but she can’t part with it because she adores it," Haddock explains. "This car has actually been put there to watch her and feedback information to Anthony Hopkins’ character about what she’s up to and her life. So yeah, she gets kind of taken [by surprise] in a really funny, dramatic way by this Hot Rod.

He'll take on the form of a 2017 Lamborghini Centenario LP770-4 later in the film.

There's no one attached to voice the character just yet, but the producers are reportedly looking at international stars, so Golden Globe nominee Judd Nelson, who voiced Hot Rod & Rodimus Prime in the 1986 movie, can probably be ruled out of the running.

Check out the photo, which depicts Haddock's initial reaction to meeting her friend-in-disguise, below:

Transformers: The Last Knight is the upcoming fifth film in the live-action film series, currently expected to be released June 23, 2017. The film will serve as a sequel to Transformers: Age of Extinction, and once again be directed by Michael Bay. As with the previous films, it will be a Paramount Pictures production.

@Highflyer - Yet an amazing movie like Dredd did poorly in the box office and we will probably never get a sequel.

Looks cool. I still find it hard to believe they waited until Transformers 5 to finally introduce Hot Rod.

@TheUnworthyThor - Personally I have never liked Hot Rod I mean the piece of shit got Optimus killed in the '86 movie sticking his nose into a fight Optimus had handled. Now in the IDW comics the guy is the sorriest piece of shit character so I have never like Hot Rod. Now sticking a shitty character into a shitty movie franchise is fine with me they go so well together.

@pesmerga44 - I've never read any Transformers comics, and I was only a passing fan of Transformers in the 80's (I was a Masters of the Universe kid and my friends were all big into G.I.Joe) but whenever Transformers did come up I always remember really liking Hot Rod but I am definitely by no means any kind of authority on the property so seeing his name in a movie does make my ears perk up.

@TheUnworthyThor - I don't want it to seem I am ripping on you for liking the character I am just venting my own frustrations and dislikes for both Hot Rod and the Bayformers films in general.

@pesmerga44 - Oh I didn't get that impression, and like I was saying it's not like he is really a character all that near and dear to my heart (if you had bad mouthed He-man we might have needed to step outside) and I understand not liking the character but I've always been naturally drawn to characters that are brash or even arrogant, Hal Jordan and Thor are my favorite superheroes after all, so Hot Rod usually was right up my alley.
