If you've read the comic books from writer Robert Kirkman then you have a pretty good idea where the character of Carl Grimes (played by talented youngster Chandler Riggs) is going. Foreshadowing that development is showrunner Glen Mazzara in an interview with TV Guide---

"We're interested in exploring Carl as a child soldier in this war against the walkers," said Mazzara. "He becomes a very, very effective, strong part of the group. He's no longer the young child who needs to be cared for and who needs to be minded. That Carl is gone."

In a separate interview with The Los Angeles Times Mazzara spoke about some of the viewer angst regarding Carl's seemingly disregard for his personal safety---

"Everyone wants to know why Carl's not in the house," he said. "Well, it's boring to sit in a house. And he's a little boy and he wants to mix it up and stuff. And he's walking through the woods and finds a zombie trapped in the mud and he starts doing what any Huck Finn would do and starts throwing rocks at the monster. And then later that is the same zombie that pulls itself free and kills Dale. And the writers were very nervous about that, you know? It feels earned, but it's a risk. Because Dale is a beloved character and if this other character is involved and responsible for that death, is the audience going to now hate Carl? But I thought the story was worth the chance."

Carl was annoying last season and I would have thought that by the death of Sophia he would have been more mature and/or interesting. However, he wasn't and I hated him, but this makes sense so, if they can turn him into the badass he is in the comics, I think this season will be Carl's redemption.

If they match up his character finally to how it is in the comic.. I can start accepting him on the show. One of the problems in a TV show is always.. fear of the networks in holding the creators back... The Religious right, the parents groups, and the freakin waves of political correctness have almost ruined real chances of strong action/horror/characters on TV.

I am just glad, so far, AMC has allowed this show to push the limits some. I mean.. first episode of the first season, we see Rick shoot point blank a lil girl zombie right in her head!!! I knew right then, AMC was letting them do what they wished.

So I have hopes.

Carl is a punk! I kind of liked him first season, and leading into the second season. However now he is just a jerk. Carl, and Lori need to go next. Keep Rick, & Daryl.

I hate the show's version of Carl for exactly the reason stated in the article. He killed Dale, and there weren't even any [frick]ing cannibals.

why the barrage of heat on that kid, lol...though i'm pissed he's the reason Dale died he's obviously now plays a bigger part in that story and killing that kid early on might not work to your contentment. lol
