Superzero's Review and Reaction To AMC'S "The Walking Dead"!

The pilot just ended and the corpse is still warm! My thoughts on "The Walking Dead"!

Do you like comics? Do you like Zombies? Do you like television? If you answered "Yes." to these three questions then you're in luck! AMC's version of Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" just may be your new favorite show!
For those of you who may not be familiar (and shame on you if you’re not!) with Image’s monthly title, it focuses on the survivors of a zombie outbreak and their daily struggles to maintain a sense of life and order amidst the chaos of a new and deadly world.

I’ve been following this title since it started and was more than overjoyed at the news that it was coming to life on AMC. This network keeps on pumping out hit after hit and this show is no exception. AMC is not afraid to push the envelope as far as content and this show delivers in spades. The pilot episode follows the first three issues to a T. Not only does it adhere faithfully to the source material but it also expands upon it. Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes goes down in the line of duty and falls into a coma. When he awakens it is to a new world. A world where the dead live and feed off the living. Rick flees the hospital and encounters two survivors, a Father and son, who have made camp in the home of his former neighbors. Through them he learns of what transpired during his coma. Rick then decides to set out to Atlanta in a last ditch effort to reach his wife and son.

I’m not going to go into much detail here as I feel the show demands to be seen, not explained. If you enjoy the comic you’ll love the show. The pilot episode only features four “living” characters: Rick, his partner Shane, and the Father and Son. Towards the end of the episode we meet a few more of the supporting characters but only briefly. The actors match the comic’s characters well and the show is off to a great start. If I have anything to complain about it might be the pacing. I feel that the episodes are being drawn out too long compared to the comic. The first episode ended about halfway through the first trade paperback: “Days Gone By”. Today I just finished volume 9: “Here We Remain”, if you’re up with me, or past, then you know why I’m slightly disappointed! This show has only scratched the surface of a story that is very deep. If I was spoiler minded this would be the part where I gush about how much I can’t wait to see the part when…..ahhh, you’ll just have to wait. Or go out and start picking up the trades and single issues! Bottom line: A GREAT START! What say you?

PS: Try to keep the comments spoiler free in regards to the comics for our friends who haven’t gotten too far! I included! You can always contact me if you want to dish!

Your right about scratching the surface. My friend and I were both saying we hope Walking Dead goes a couple of seasons at least. I cant wait to see them get to the jail.

Issue #75 will be in volume 14 I believe. I know thats a long way away, but as an Axel fan you'll appreciate it when you get to it. Just something kinda goofy for long time Walking Dead readers.

i havnt read the comic, but have nothing but good things.

anyway, the show is pretty awesome. they clearly put so much effort into it, im shocked that it was a TV show. it's just draws you in so quickly.

@ CaptainOtter, It certainly felt more like a movie than it did a TV show. I was suprised to see that much gore outside of HBO or Showtime. Headshots galore!

p.s. I Love Otters!!

Very happy with this show! The wife hasn't read the trades yet but digs comics and horror; so after a very busy day yesterday, she wasn't sure she was going to make it through the entire episode. 10 minutes into the show she was fully awake and engrossed in the show. They did a great job.

"I can taste their tears." Great! lol

@JaySchluffy

I'm deft excited to see the Gov too! Like I said though, the pacing of the show makes me think we won't get to him for awhile, probably not till the end of season 2...

This was a cool take on the comic, stretching out some things and making them more fitting for small screen but pushing it at the same time. I appreciated it. Andrew Lincoln does a fantastic Rick!!

Spoiler... kinda....

If everything goes according to plan, they won't reach the prison until the END of SEASON 2. Wow. I don't know if I can wait for that.

And anyone reading the comic knows that NO ONE is safe. Not one person is off limits from being killed. That's one of the things that makes this such a fantastic story.

Dying to see where they're going with the people he hooks up with in Atlanta, since in the comic he only met Glen there.

Oh man... I just realized...

If they don't make it to the prison until the end of Season 2, then we have to wait until Season 3 to meet Michonne. Next to Tyreese and Andrea, she is my favorite.

Superzero - 11/1/2010, 7:01 AM
@mavalenti

well I'm guessing the prison won't make an appearance until end of 2 or start of 3 just by the way the show is going now. I just finished book 8 and it was very HARD to read simply because of how much you care for these characters. You're right on the money when you say that's what makes it work so well. Judging by what I saw last night, and again this morning, the show is sticking with that formula!

I haven't read the comic so I'm coming at this fresh and without any expectations.

But... for me... the show was moving really slow until he turned the corner and there were all those zombies. I was wanting a lot more action. Hopefully, it was just a slow introduction and the episodes will pick up the pace from there. Because I think the show is going to lose viewers pretty quickly if it doesn't and I doubt it will make it to Season 2.

While I was watching this, I couldn't help thinking about 28 Days Later. So, at first, I was a little worried that it was going to be too derivative but I think it moved past that quickly enough that it wasn't relevant.

This show was unbelievable! It totally lived up to the most consistently good comic on the shelf!

I can't say enough about this show, but something thats definately worth mentioning is that NOTHING was changed or left out from the comic. There were a few things ADDED, like Morgan and his zombie wife, but y'know what? That only adds much needed character to someone who was only in the comics for the first couple issues.

As long as they don't change anything, and only add to it, then this show will be completely amazing for the long haul!

@ Superzero

lol, I can't wait for that part with the Governor! All Hail Kirkman!

@corndogburglar

Apparently Thomas Jane was saying that Darabount offered him a role that would be "...A little further down the road. It's a bad guy. A REAL bad guy." Holy crap how awesome would he be as The Governor? He's sooooooo EVIL! I've never read a comic that's made me actually yell at it until I got to book 8! lol
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/1/2010, 8:14 AM
@ Superzero

oh man, The Governor might be one of the cruelest and evil characters to ever grace the pages of a comic. And you're right, buddy, Jane would rock that role!

Also, did you notice that Lori looks like she's going to be just as big of a raging bitch as she is in the comic? lol, or is that just me? I can't stand her, she's the most annoying character in the series, in my opinion. The No One Is Safe arc made me smile! is that wrong? lol
Superzero
Superzero - 11/1/2010, 8:27 AM
hmmm it might have made you smile but it put a big lump in my throat and brought my Gf to tears...lol...Lori's a bitch but for the right reasons I think. At least she's not as bug shit crazy as Carol though...lol. Shane is a little more sleazy then he was in the comic which I like...I think this show has a lot of potential to fill the void that was left after Lost went off the air. This is a show that will only get better as it goes on. It's just a shame that I have to get my Kenny Powers fix on monday mornings now.....lol
