THE WALKING DEAD: Comic Villain 'Negan' Looks Likely For The Show

During an interview with MTV about the latest issue of The Walking Dead comic, Robert Kirkman says that there's a 99% chance that the current -- and particularly nasty -- villain, Negan, will appear in the AMC tv series. Comic SPOILERS ahead..

The current Walking Dead comic arc features a "big bad" by the name of Negan, and he's...not a very nice man. In fact when we first meet him he's bashing fan-favorite character Glenn's brains out with a barbed wire-baseball bat he calls Lucille. The character has been accused of being a little cartoonish in his villainy, but has remained pretty popular despite the criticisms. Fans have wondered if Negan would serve as the tv show's next primary antagonist after The Governor, and although that seems unlikely, it's a safe bet he'll pop up at some point. Here's what Kirkman had to say to MTV about it.

MTV News: Getting back to Negan, [Producer] Scott Gimple has said he wants to get the character on the show eventually. You know, there is a guy AMC likes, who's just finishing up a run on a popular show on the network. Any chance you could snag Jon Hamm for the part?

Robert Kirkman: He's not tall enough! That's a joke. I think Jon Hamm would be perfect. I think after "Mad Men" has run, Jon Hamm is going to have a Tom Hanks level film career, so I don't think he'll be coming back to television anytime soon. Although that would be cool! As far as Negan casting goes, Scott and I are always talking about who we would put in that, it's definitely on our minds, and there are definitely a lot of candidates. But I wouldn't expect Negan too terribly soon, although he is definitely in the plan. It's a 99% lock that he's going to be in the show eventually, so be on the lookout for that.

Um, I haven't read the comics but from what I gather, Negan does have some redeeming qualities. He detests rape and any type of sexual violence.

Well I hope he doesn't say that last line on the show hahaha

Snore... another "evil human" on a zombie tv show. Never seen that threat before. I do not know what it is about the show, maybe the hype (like Mad Men), but people are way more tolerant with this show than others as far as shaky quality, go nowhere plots, and then re-doing existing plots all over again. I love horror flicks, but this show underlines why "Horror" programs are not sustainable on tv after a couple seasons (especially zombie stuff, it's supposedly almost 2 years later, there should be almost no rotting zombies walking around at this point. Are they magical Zombies that only rot so much?)

Its been a while that I read the comics...
But I think at the same time he claims the wives of other people in his group and has a harem.
If one of his wives is caught with their original husbands thats adultary and he punishes them.

Interesting villains in The Walking Dead:

The Governor
Negan

Looks like they have a lot to choose from.

Love this show and the way it's written. Can't wait till October. Wish they'd hurry up with the 2nd show and then run it in the main series off season. Alternate it but keep it in the same world. This franchise has so many possibilities. This would be a writers dream.

This guy is a complete psycho. I can't wait to see them bring him on, and it makes the most sense right now. They'll probably start next season with the gang heading toward DC, and end the mid-season finale with them introducing Negan. At least thats how I would do it.

Anyway, yeah, this guy is a psycho. The Governor was more of a sympathetic villain in the show, so it'll be cool to see someone that is just off the deep end.

@ MAK

Yeah, he says he detests rape and sexual violence, yet as a pittance, he basically forces the people under his protection to let him have his way with all the females.

So as you can see, his views are a bit skewed.

I know it's a crazy idea but I think Danny McBride would be good for Negan. They talk exactly the same way. Not that big of a stretch after seeing him in This Is The End. Practically the same character.

I believe this is why they changed the Governor so much. Negan is basically just a more extreme version of the Governor in the comics, So pulling the Governor a different direction, opens a larger gap between the two characters to make them more unique.

So the change that happened to the Governor was important to a better character in my opinion.

The knife has zombie residue on it. Give the comics a read.

@teinen, Pretty fatal since it's the same knife Jesus found after Negan attacks Rick group (aka weapon with walker blood on it).

I'm pretty sure that isn't literal. I've seen panels where he has killed his own followers for trying to rape others.

AMC MUST cast Vinnie Jones as Negan it's just perfect for the role:

Too bad Vinnie it's battling his cancer right now, like a second choice I could see Henry Rollins (since Kirkman was inspired on him to create the character)

Give the whole comics-to-live action thing a rest, they don't, and franky shouldn't be exactly the same. Some people get so bent out of shape about it. As long as the character is still interesting and fun to watch. With the beg exception of Nolan's last two "Batman" movies, he wasn't even the best detective in the Palisades, let alone the world. Those were gritty crime dramas in costumes, enjoyable, but not Batman!

When its time for Negan to get his just desserts, I hope they have something creative in mind to put him out of his misery. Throwing him into a crowd of zombies would be too kind.
